The woman who interviewed Andrei was dressed very nicely - in fact, more nicely than I see most women dressed professionally anymore. I wondered if she was instructed to play it up to contrast more fully with Andrei's shorts and polo shirt.

A lot of it may have been producer driven, but I think that miss Joyce (?) may just naturally present herself that professionally every day.

I have no doubt it was producer driven (or she really just wanted to look extra nice for filming.)  Most companies (and industries) have cultures that dictate how people dress.  I'm NOT saying everyone in her industry dresses in stained jeans and ratty t's but she seemed pretty overdressed for an industry where the vast majority of candidates would simply find dressing neatly and cleanly to be sufficient.

As a coffee lover, have to admit this post is cute and I'm totally with Mykelti. I usually drink only two cups a day, but I want those two cups! And some days I'm good for a third.

Trader Joe’s has a delicious instant coffee and I always alway always—even when I’m carrying-on and space is tight—bring a jar with me whenever I travel. I like to drink coffee constantly and all day long and I can’t expect others to meet that insatiable need. So I would say Mykelti is my sister-in-caffeination except a four-cupper is for dilettantes.

I'm not that hardcore but I get it, lol! Before I got my Keurig, I had a Mr. Coffee four cup (which, let's be real, actually makes two mugfuls, lol) since my husband does not drink coffee at all. I'd make a pot in the morning and sometimes another one later, and it was perfect for just me.

Your story reminds me of my husband, who drinks Diet Pepsi all day - whenever we go over anyone else's house for whatever occasion, he brings his own soda because he knows no one will likely have enough!

My husband sets up my coffee pot and I think you could stand the spoon in it.  I figure my 4 cups of his brew is the equivalent of 8 regular cups of coffee.

After thinking about that - does TLC really have a translator or are they just relying on Azan to tell them?  He COULD have just said "She wants me to ask you if we can sleep together here, but I'm not asking that.  Please just say no."

I know this is a soap and we're supposed to suspend belief but COME ON SHOW.  You can't cuff a witness.  If they are avoiding a subpoena, possibly, but the fact that he was there and they suspect he knows something is NOT grounds to arrest and/or cuff him.  Just like Eli asking him yesterday what that phone call was about.  Tripp had every right to say it was a personal, unrelated phone call and none of his business.

Hope REALLY should have been fired a long time ago if this is how she runs an investigation.

This!  They are really going out of their way to make Ben look like a poor little innocent person.  We really don't need to get hit on the head that hard.

On another note, why have they been doing Kassie's make-up so red these last few days?  Hope everything is OK with her.

I am willing to give Mother Ross a break on her "I talked to some Latina women I know" comment simply because  she's probably had a very sheltered life that did not include many non-whites or non-Americans.   So she reached out to someone who might give her some advice.

My neighbor, who was raised in a small town in eastern NC, says similar things.  For example, she knows that gays are a certain way because she had a gay supervisor and he was that way.   She has people at her church who are from African countries and she now assumes that everyone from Africa eats certain types of food.

The problem with Mother Ross and my neighbor is that, while they might have good intentions to understand a different culture, they generalize too much.

I'd say that Pao is also generalizing when she says she is the way she is because of her culture.  I happen to think that Pao has certain preferences for how she dresses and acts that have more to do with her personality than her culture.  I find it hard to believe that every woman from her country likes to dress the way she does, for example.

It's too bad that Pao wasn't able to say something like, "I appreciate that you were trying to learn about my culture by talking to your one Latina friend, but I just want to make sure you know Latinx people are all different.  Just like all white middle-class Americans aren't alike."

    2 minutes ago, brillia79 said:

This! No one in Pao’s family that we saw her visit dresses like her. Much like here in the US, clothing tastes vary. She’s not wearing anything cultural that is unique to Colombia. You can get that same thotwear at Rainbow.

Pao doesn't WANT to get along with Russ's family.   She's using "culture" as a way to be the victim of his evil family.  They don't accept her "culture" meaning they would like a little respect IN THEIR OWN HOME!  (Wear a robe for god's sake, and at least TRY not to insult every person I invited to a party in your honor.)  I agree with Nannybails that Russ's mother is probably jumping to conclusions based on limited information, but this seems to be evidence that she is trying so hard to understand and get along with Pao.  For Pao to constantly portray her as an evil unaccepting witch is just cruel.

Asking how many jobs you can refuse before you're even on the roster?  Did he even explain to the woman why he might need to refuse a job?

I'm going to cut him a break and say this is a legitimate question.  She is offering contract work.  It comes when it comes.  He MIGHT get 1-2 thousand miles a week but, then again, he MIGHT NOT.  There is no indication that this is his intention, BUT if he signed up with more than one agency, there is a chance he could be on a different job when they called him with an opportunity.  Many companies that hire for contract positions will contact you with a job, but if you are not available, will keep you in their list of contacts for the next opening.  You might not be their first choice but you will still be called.  To ask if you must take every single route offered every single time in order to stay on the roster is NOT really that outrageous of a question.

    I still like Lani/Rafe. I don't even know!

They just seem more natural together.  Sort of like two equals where one isn't constantly trying to "win" the other or "make up" for something.  With Hope Rafe was always going to be unworthy in some way.  I'm not a big Rafe fan but I'm really sick of no one ever being good enough for the holy Horton princess.  Lani doesn't seem to have chemistry with either Eli or JJ but somehow seems less wooden with Rafe.

I think this song is way over-exposed too, but Maelyn's rendition was beautiful.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen it performed with singers dressed in white, or with a robed choir, or some damn thing.  People latch onto that one word and disregard the rest of the lyrics.  It's a beautiful song in the right singer's hands, like Maelyn's .  Also, agree-- it should be put on hiatus.

The problem is the wrong singers are usually trying to show they have "range" or some "emotional connection" and they end up screaming the song.  This song in their hands becomes unhearable.

Maelyn is one of only less than a handful of singers that have been on this show that actually affect me when they sing.

Well, they certainly tried to give Maelyn every advantage. Getting to go last with the secular equivalent of God Bless the USA (or any other OTT patriotic/Christian song you could think of).

Hallelujah is NOT a Christian/God song.  It has been misrepresented SO many times that people think it is, but it is not.  That said, Maelyn did a truly effective version.  Usually when people do that song on this show they end up screeching, the fact that she always pulled back and didn't take it over the top is a testament to her abilities.  She also kept up perfectly with John on Unforgettable.  She is definitely the best singer.  Whether or not she wins is anybody's guess.

  13. First off, I DON'T know the law in the DR but I think there was either producer manipulation or Pedro simply didn't tell Chantel everything.  My husband has had his permanent green card for over 30 years.  His mother became ill and he bought a one-way ticket to go see her - not knowing how long he would be needed there.  (Jamaica - not the DR.)  He was checking in at the airport and was told he could NOT leave the country without a return ticket.  He ended up buying a fully refundable ticket that he then cashed in when he made arrangements to return.   I don't believe AT ALL that Pedro was able to go to the DR for some unspecified amount of time.  Either it was their storyline or he bought a round trip ticket but didn't tell Chantel.  Maybe he wanted to make her nervous that he wasn't going to come back at all.

And what is with Ty having to spell out some obvious word in the room? Last week, "Cuba" and this week "country." Just lazy and stupid. Does anybody put obvious words on their walls now? The last time that was cute was when Mary Richards had the big "M" on her wall.

Ty seems to be a VERY cliché designer.  Country HAS to mean hay goats and chickens, right?  But now I want someone to tell him that they want their room to be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! I would LOVE to see how he gets all those letters in there.

He was short of fabric.  If he had put less fabric in the skirt he would have had more to layer on - making it darker.  He miscalculated - but because he is so talented otherwise no one called him on it.

Yes, but she has intentionally insulated herself against absorbing American culture by insisting they live in Miami among the other SA "models," where Pao can continue to speak Spanish, show up late for engagements, dress as sexy as she wants, and generally ignore the norms of the society she has married into.  We give Nicole a hard time for not understanding that she can't mac with Azan out on the streets of Morocco, but Pao seems to be getting a pass, at least from Russ, about ignoring the norms of American behavior.

EXACTLY THIS.  To carry this to a REALLY extreme place - If a man came to this country and said that in his culture it is considered appropriate to beat his wife or daughter is either one disobeyed him we would not all shrug our shoulders and say - "Yeah...OK... Culture..."

    2 minutes ago, Neurochick said:

So what you're saying is that Pao should just suck it up and move to Oklahoma.

I have not read where anybody on this board said she should suck it up and move to Oklahoma.  (If I missed it, sorry.)  What we are saying is - when you visit someone it is on you to try to be polite and follow local customs unless they violate your moral beliefs (and I don't believe being late is a moral belief.)  To be deliberately rude and cry "culture" is disingenuous at best downright disgusting at worst.
