  1. Janine and Emily were sent there to work to death. The only reason they have a second chance is due to another handmaid's courage who sacrificed her own life.
  2. True. Quite a few people believe she was already that way. If he did create the colonies and somehow found a conscious then good. If he does something about it, even better. Anyone suffering in that place will appreciate whatever reprieve they can get. But if he did have a hand in creating it then he needs to be held accountable.
  3. Yes, we don't really know what he's up to. But as someone else pointed out, why did he have to go through each traumatic thing Emily endured? This will boil down to whether he created the colonies. The labor of death.
  4. As someone else pointed out a baby was kidnapped / stolen and the kid grew up to love the thief. It does not make it okay or normal. Just fact. Your exact words were: I only brought up adoption because you said: A mother doesn't automatically possess this ability. Some mothers can't be bothered. An adoptive mother and even a baby thief can. It's not normal but it happens.
  5. That's why I prefaced it as my first impression. Take the maid out of the equation and it does not make up for the way he treats his wife. He practically shoves her and locks her away for speaking. I think it's pretty serious that she stated he created the colonies. The place where people are condemned to labor and die. Pretty sadistic to me. As for June, she told a struggling and impressionable 15 yr old that she should pursue love wherever she can find it. Are we dismissing the part where his wife said he created the colonies? I guess he could rid her to the place he created. I bet all those condemned to work and deteriorated to death there were appreciative. I'm just not sure an arsonist gets credit for putting out a fire. And how much do you think Emily enjoyed recalling all the sadistic things done to her? He went over them one by one. Why? A normal person would simply sympathize with, "You've been through some harsh situations. Sorry."
  6. No one's normalizing this. Your statements made it seem like only a biological mother could care for the baby which is not true. Then somehow the baby is aware it was stolen from her mother? I'm confused as to why anyone would think Fred is redeemable. As if being nice makes all the damaging things he's done go away. This guy has the gall to dangle the baby as a way into his rape victim's good graces. He probably thinks he's doing her favors. He's either delusional or manipulative or both. The commanders consider themselves part of the upper class. It's the difference between insane and just stress. I don't think commander Lawrence's wife is crazy. She's rebelling against him and the terrible thing he created. He's trying to control her by physical or mental abuse and maybe medication. They want a baby because it's necessary for the human race to continue. If it doesn't work out then someone else will take it.
  7. So an adopted child cannot be cared for by its non-biological parent? I think there are plenty of orphaned and adopted children who would disagree. There are also plenty of children with biological parents who are failures. The baby has no idea SJ stole her from her mother. SJ can be the architect of this dystopian mess and still care for this child. Those two are not mutually exclusive. And she is foul. She deserves no redemption.
  8. Probably because it was his penis that raped June. Manipulation does not equal kindness. He likes to play games. Make you feel special that you commit suicide. Just ask the last handmaid. And like a sick psycho, quote the holy scripture so he can beat you. For record, neither one of them deserves redemption especially after the pregnancy rape.
  9. The only new thing is the eccentric commander Lawrence. First impression is he's sadistic. He has a maid with a gouged eye. He shoved his troubled wife who condemned his creation of the colonies. He sure did his research on Emily though. Why would he want a woman exposed to radiation to have his baby? Why would anyone want that at all? Then there's June. She just doesn't think things through. It was her fault for planting seeds of pursuing love in that kid's head. And because THT writers like shock and drama, they decided to drown them for the sake of love. A tribute to Romeo and Juliet. Not. Enter Serena with so much humanity in her tears. She is distraught about Eden. How do you go from raping a pregnant woman to that? Oh but they don't stop there. We must give the woman she helped rape a bonding moment. She allows June to hold her baby while Serena looks on with joy. Seriously? This show is all sorts of mind twisting.
  10. One of the problems with the show is the extended scenes. People get the agony and suffering in 5 seconds. We don't need close ups of her face to go on and on. It's filler. I believe EM is a good actress and that was proven back on Mad Men. I also don't think someone deserves an award for nonsensical drama. But that may be more on the writers. As for her character, June, it takes some special skill to make a supposedly sympathetic character unlikeable. I don't know what the writers were thinking. Fred and Serena can only be portrayed as monsters for so long. Viewers are already expressing exhaustion from the prolong darkness of the show.
  11. This is exactly how I felt. A lot of extended or pointless scenes. Like what was the point of showing the wolf over and over? Closed captioning shows it was growling. This isn't going well for season 2 with all the other nonsensical drama. The main one is the meeting with Hannah. Why remind your daughter of her past life that she can't go back to? It's unnecessary pain for a child. It looks like Hulu took their hit show and just dropped the ball.
  12. I know this was weeks ago but I just binged on this series. Your commentary is on point. The show creates bizaare drama. The most ridiculous scene was June antagonizing Fred that the baby isn't his own. That was after she asks aunt Lydia to protect it. She said if Fred could hurt a woman then he could hurt a child. Why would you then give him a reason to resent it? There are other instances of nonsense like June smirking at Serena after the false alarm. This woman just framed another commander and June knows what she's capable of because of their writing collaboration. SJ could make her situation much worst than just kicking her out. And yes, more nonsense drama of allowing June to not just see Hannah but also interact with her. For what? So June could make Hannah remember her but not be able to stay? She just caused that child more pain. The worst of this is the rape scene. Hulu wants to be HBO on steroids and took it too far. Raping a pregnant woman??? Really!? It also felt forced because SJ was showing some signs of humanity.
