Golic and Wingo have mentioned Kobe’s past many times this morning.

They have also been advised that they can release that there were three teenage girls on the helicopter, and I’m overwhelmed thinking of the ripple effect the loss of these nine lives will have.  Just think alone of that travel team and all those young teammates.

How do you know that there were three teenage girls?

While it may have been phrased awkwardly, I think I understand what they were saying. To my knowledge (more die-hard basketball fans can correct me if I'm wrong), Kobe was the first truly high profile player to go from high school, straight to the NBA, versus going the college route. And of course years later, LeBron did the same. So I think that may be what they were trying to say.

This. Outside of Kobe and his daughter, none of the other victims' identities have been officially confirmed and it would be very irresponsible for people to go around online making claims and throwing out names. Hell the LA County official sounded pissed off enough about TMZ reporting about Kobe before they'd even gotten on the scene.

All 9 of them have now been confirmed.

IMUO, Night Court had its moments and started out with great potential but it quickly devolved into a crass, nasty cartoon. My fave characters were the first two Older Woman Bailiffs played by Selma Diamond and Florence Halop (each playing characters with the performers' given names) and, yes, I was quite saddened by each of the performers' deaths (IIRC, there was a Very Special Episode dealing with Bull getting upset over Selma but all that was done for Florence was having a memorial shot at the end of her last taped episode with Mr. Anderson voicing over 'We're going to miss you, Florence!'). Roz ( Marsha Warfield) was okay but the best that can be said for her was that her character wasn't a deliberately annoying one unlike Dan or Christine's.

Oh, yes, Dan. The thing is that he started out as an interesting, multi-layered character  who somehow was likable despite the disparity between him being a prosecutor doing all he could to uphold the letter of the law but  it was implied ( note I said implied) that during his offtask life he had assignations with women who were earning their living doing what he prosecuted. OK, rather than let the audience have to ponder how a proper professional could behave differently off the clock, they quickly turned him into a walking cartoon who was openly perverted and blatantly unprofessional even when supposedly needing to carry out his duties. Alas, I know that this is not an entirely fictional phenom but that doesn't mean that this was entertaining to me. Oh, and they turned him into a snotty, bullying sadist to a masochistic homeless person named Phil. BOO! How Mr.  Larroquette was considered worthy of Emmy noms much less won them after the first year of this character losing all its subtlety, I'll never understand.

Christine simply was too grating and annoying to be sympathetic despite the fact that she supposedly was  the counterpoint (as the straight woman defender) to the pompous foil Dan. Ironically, I liked Markie Post better when she starred with John Ritter in Hearts Afire than I did here- but I can't say I have any real interest in seeing her back in a series again (and  I was rather infuriated with her jumping on the bed in the Lincoln Bedroom like she was a junior high schooler at a slumber party instead of behaving as  a mature adult and a grateful guest venerating a part of our nation's heritage ).

Oh, and I can't forget Harry. Yes, the idea of a zany goofball being able to make sober decisions as a judge was also a bit intriguing but, alas they soon turned him a total clown as well.  Thankfully, the late Mr. Anderson got to show some comedic subtlety on Dave's World so future viewers will be able to see that instead of solely this show.

Yeah, I wish they'd ended it a LOT earlier and had let it live up to its potential instead of turning it into what they did so quickly!

I still miss Harry too, and he was a really funny guy.

I wonder if the Motion Picture Academy has this year’s In Memoriam locked down yet? If they do, they should probably unlock it & add 1 person (at least, depending on what else happens between now & February 8 or 9; the Oscars are on February 9th). Most people have probably forgotten, but Kobe won an Oscar in 2018, as part of the team behind the Best Animated Short that year, Dear Basketball, which was based on something—the media’s calling it a poem—Kobe wrote on his retirement from basketball. So he deserves to be among those remembered at this year’s ceremony.

I’m shocked by this (I slept most of the afternoon & awoke to learn the news at dinner time; when I saw the “Hot” designation on the thread, I figured somebody BIG must’ve passed, but I never dreamed it would be Kobe & his daughter).

I’m saddened for Kobe’s family, friends, & other loved ones—sadly, he left 2 daughters, Bianka & Capri, who I think may not be old enough to remember Kobe, or Gianna, all that well (I think they’re pretty close in age, & only somewhere around preschool age, if even that).

I’m also saddened, in a way, for the game of women’s basketball. Kobe had passed his love of the game on to his teenage daughter Gianna (aka GiGi); they were on their way to a game she was to play in when they were killed in the crash. Considering how talented Kobe was, it might’ve been interesting to see if Gianna was as good as, or possibly better than, her dad in the women’s game. Now we’ll never know.

Kobe may not have been perfect (at least off the court). But then, none of us are.

    RIP&L Kobe & Gianna

I really do hope his name does get added.

Now I am hearing that TMZ or one of the earliest sites to break the news broke the story before anyone had gotten to tell Vanessa. If that is true, how horrible to find out on the internet that your husband and daughter were dead.

I'm not handling this news very well either.

Just from casual glances at Twitter, it seems rumors are floating around about who was on the helicopter in addition to Kobe.  All of his children, another former NBA player, etc.  It reminds me of when Payne Stewart was killed in a plane crash (what a horrible day that was) and it came out afterwards that there had been a rumor it was Tiger Woods' plane.  Imagine if Twitter had been around then, since of course no news organization reported that rumor as they scrambled to figure out who was on the plane.  Today parents have lost children, children have lost a parent, at least one person has lost a spouse, so why make it worse by tweeting rumors?

It is kind of confusing about who died.

Possible. A friend of Kobe's who was speaking to CNN by phone, let it slip that there was a friend of Gianna's on board, because he was mentioning how devastating it was for that family. The interviewer did not press him on that, probably owing to the procedure of confirming the identities, especially of minors, before publicly reporting it.

One of the news reports I was watching also semi-confirmed a little league coach who I think worked with Kobe. Apparently the Orange County organization he worked for were the ones who confirmed that he was on the helicopter.

It was John Altobelli, a baseball coach at Orange Coast College.

The initial reports, that 5 people were killed, came from various media outlets.  However, shortly after 5 PM, a county official gave a press conference and stated that there were 9 people on the helicopter and no survivors.

He also stated that he would not identify any of the victims by name out of respect for their families.  The bodies hadn't been removed from the wreckage yet and the coroner would be doing the official ID.  He mentioned how horrifying it must be for someone to learn of a loved one's death on TMZ.  Obviously, the horse Is already out of the barn, but I understand his POV.  I would presume he may also have been in touch with the various families and they didn't want names released right now.

I wonder if they'll be releasing all of the victim's names soon.

LA County Sheriff reports there are NINE people confirmed dead in the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and his daughter.  The sheriff declined to identify any of the victims, saying that he believe is it disrespectful to the families to give names until the coroner has completed identification.

NBC News says they have confirmed that Bryant and his daughter were among the victims, but the sheriff wouldn't go there.

    Oh wow.
