  1. It shouldn't be THAT hard. Both Tyson AND in fact also Kaku are based in New York.

Kaku's an interesting guy. Stephen should try him if Tyson is booked up.

Not that they really do the same thing. I mean Kaku is a Theoretical Physicist, not an Astrophysicist. But they both have that "translating Science for the common man" aspect to their careers.

When you're busy, you're busy.  Keep in mind that Neil DeGrasse Tyson also tours. He's not always around NYC. So he has to prep for those and travel as well. And I also assume that the AMNH still wants him to do something in regards to the Hayden planetarium. The last show I saw in there (a few weeks ago) was kind of lacking in substance.

Don't know about Kaku or his schedule, he hasn't said anything publicly and his book tour ended this past spring.

Any scientist who have an ability to convey science to the masses would be nice. Brian Greene (theoretical physicist) and Francis Collins (genetists/head of NIH) were both on Colbert's last TCR and pretty good with that. Heck, there are a ton of great Youtube PhDs with fun channels that are all about doing that, it'd be fun to see one of them on. A new generation of scientists so to speak.

But I fear I'm probably in the wrong thread for this discussion and have veered off topic.

I enjoyed Trevor Noah and am greatly anticipating his TDS reign to start. None of the music guests have been my type of music per se, but I'm ok with having musical guests in general. One day, maybe it'll be my favorite band and no need to be hypocritical I guess.

The show has been able to break from feeling too much like TCR which is a good thing. But at the same time, it seems to lack the "let's get viral on the internet" feeling that the other late night shows seem to have (dumb games with celebrities with Fallon and walk the streets and selectively edit only "dumb people"/someone famous reads a mean tweet with Kimmel). Not sure if that's good or bad.

  2. Anyone else shocked that Neil Degrasse Tyson hasn't already been on (Colbert had him in a video over the summer)? Or for someone slightly less overexposed, Michio Kaku?

Neil DeGrasse Tyson had said in an interview sometime this summer that Colbert had tried to get him as a guest (for either the first day or first week) and he wanted to come on. However, they weren't able to get the schedules to work out for that and Neil DeGrasse Tyson has to work on Star Talk (season 2 premiering October 25 on Nat Geo). No doubt he will be on at some point.

  3. So my biggest gripe is how Stephen is conducting the interviews. It really would be best if he did like Craig Ferguson did and not use any notes.

I saw the interview that Stephen did after the Rosewater premiere with Jon Stewart and Mazier Bahari. Even in that situation, Stephen was pretty bad IIRC. He overtalked and didn't pay attention, just like people are complaining about here. And that's a pretty low key interview he did with a friend (albeit pretty late at night).

I didn't see the second episode and didn't really notice it the first episode. Though I was jut kind of bored during those interviews. I think the interrupting thing is something he did as a character on TCR so much that it's going to be a hard habit to break. Though Colbert on TCR was always attentive at listening, allowing him to "play up the asshole" when allowed. Very quick and clearly using his improv chops. So don't know what's up here.

Jon Stewart never used notes either.

He used them when debating politicians/media folk. He'd have facts, figures, and quotes on them that he'd use. He also had cards during interviews with celebrities, but never really consulted them for better or worse. However, he also had the interrupting issue though not so much the not listening part, he was a very astute listener.

  4. In Keg!Max!, when Rory and Jess are at the party, Luke and Nicole are spending the night in the inn so they can get a good start on their ski trip the next day. (where they'd be skiing in May/June is beyond me).  In Say Goodnight, Gracie, the episode right after that, Luke is called to Kyle's house to deal with the aftermath of the party fight the next morning. He says he was called by Kyle's parents when he still had 10 minutes of sleep left. This is pre-cell phone Luke. He then storms into the diner and talks to Jess about the fight. At no point is the mention of the fact that, he wasn't supposed to be at home or even in Stars Hollow at this point. Did the writers forget about this particular plot point?

  5. I've watched and gone to enough cons to know that unless a lead/main actor was involved behind the scenes in terms of writing or maybe directing, their memory of the show is going to be iffy at best. Even if we're talking about the current season of  a show that's on. It always seems to be the recurring actors who seem to have a better memory for some reason. Probably because they know they're invited to the con for a specific reason so they better have stories to tell or they won't get any more con invites. A lot more leeway for bigger names.  I don't think the actors and their foggy memories at ATX really bothered me. In fact, I really enjoyed the passion that some of them brought (ie Hep Alien playing, the behind the scenes photos labeling each other with character names, etc...)

  6. But as for the online viewership, I'm sure it's higher than with most shows but if it was millions and millions of people I would think they would publicize that somehow.

I didn't necessarily say it was legal ;-) Probably not in the millions regardless. But more international than people think. My cousins in China for instance. It's a show that was on for 17 years, people watched and people stopped watching. So the number of people who have watched the show in general is probably higher than the ratings show. Plus people share certain clips of the show on facebook and twitter and those goes viral, but those people aren't necessarily TDS fans. Add to that, places like Mediaite and Huffpo love using clips of the show on their sites. And the readership of those blogs get their viewing from the version of the clips on those sites. Mediaite gets their clip up a few minutes after it airs. And then that gets shared on twitter facebook etc...

I mean I have friends who have heard of it but never watched it. One gave the reason that serious matters should not be trivialized and joked about and finds the whole idea offensive. Some people just aren't interested in politics or world events. Some people just don't watch TV in general. My in-laws don't own a TV, never heard of Jon Stewart. But never heard of Bear Grylls either. My parents watch Chinese TV at home. So on so forth.

  7. The episodes are uploaded onto the net by around 3AM EST after airing, put on Hulu, clips are put on Youtube, and the show is aired twice the next day. Most of my friends and myself haven't watched "live" tv in years. Hell, we don't even watch "DVR tv". We don't pay for cable and we live too close to an airport for antenna to work (is that normal? Not being able to get broadcast TV? It's annoying.) TDS is perfect for computer viewing, especially since so many interviews go long and are thrown to the web anyways. I'm under the impression that many TDS viewers swing more computer than TV. And judging by how many people were asking for live streams of the broadcast on Reddit, yeah...

I don't understand why they picked this date for his last show--they should have waited until the next day, so they could cover the debate on his penultimate appearance.

Because TDS doesn't air on Friday? Because Jon seems so tired of the BS that is the Republican candidates that he was probably relieved he didn't have to go near it? I mean Trump is hilarious for comedy, but it's horrific that he's leading in the polls both pre and post debate. Swinging a racket against the wind is only exciting for so long. Seems like he wanted to go out on his wife's birthday and they both got a fantastic party with Springsteen and fireworks and everything out of it.

  8. Ok so about that mattress that got moved around everywhere. While I get Lorelai's reason to be disgusted by just that mattress, isn't that easily solved with a mattress protector, a mattress pad, and sheets? It's not like Rory was going to sleep on the bare mattress.

  9. I felt bad for Lorelai, when Max basically called her self-absorbed, when he still didn't have a key. He reminds me of Dean, in ways: moving too quickly, and I'm surprised he didn't leave her fourteen messages in one night.

Weren't they a few days from getting married at that point though? It does make sense why he'd be so upset, it was pretty clear that she wasn't taking their relationship as seriously as he was and they were going to be husband and wife in a few days. Granted, that relationship was all kinds of messed up timing wise and you're right about moving too quickly. But I get his frustration there. It was one of many signs why they shouldn't have gotten married, and they didn't. So that worked out.

  10. Where does this go? Media? Or last episode chat? Colbert talking about his speech.

“I’d already written the Frodo/Sam thing that I did in the last show and one of the producers (Steve Bodow) said would you mind — we’d like to say thank you, would you come up with something?” recounts Colbert. “And I said sure, but you know he’s going to flop around like a fish on a dock. He’s not going to allow me to do that. I felt like a rodeo clown, trying to keep him on that stage. I thought he was honestly gonna leave.”

“When all the rest of the correspondents came out at the end, you can’t hear it on the recording, unfortunately, but we’re all chanting, ‘Made him cry! Made him cry!’ I think that my be my favorite thing I ever did on ‘The Daily Show,’ because it’s true — he never let you thank you,” says Colbert.

  11.        Well as of right now, they must be doing individual activities. The studio/heavy hands of the show are busy deconstructing the set to be moved into the Newseum, and except for Elliot Kalan (the now ex-head writer of TDS), I have no clue what they'll be doing, besides missing their voice in a critical part of the election (and more Trump bullish%&t after his remarks on Megyn Kelly). Correspondents Hasan Minaj and Jordan Klepper recently performed stand-up with Al Madrigal (I think he left the show too) at the OutsideLands festival in San Francisco.

Al did not leave the show. The crop of correspondents are still the same.

  12. And a funny story from her: remember when Al Sharpton was supposed to be on the show, and he canceled at the last minute and Stephen Colbert filled in for him? She said they had to grab him to do it because all the other correspondents had already left and he was out the door too, but they managed to catch him, and he basically walked from the street to the couch and played him for Jon. Brilliantly, too.

Was Colbert headed to the premiere of one of the LOTR movies at that point as well? Commitment.

  13. Yes they were Daily Show dogs, confirmed by Daniel Radosh.

Yes, these are the actual #DailyShow office dogs, though some photographic trickery was required to get this shot.

(I even took notes at the tapings I attended for taping reports... it's sad that they are gone forever, like all the other forum posts on TWoP).

Use wayback machine for the old TWoP forums. I got my taping reports that way, someone here was nice enough to figure it out. Let me see if I can find their post. It helps if you remember the date and also a lot inputting your own url or clicking around once you get it on wayback machine. It took a bit, but it works!!

  14. I would even have understood if she'd gone wacko. That's a lot of change.

With all the shit Paris put her through just at Chilton, I would have understood (but not condoned) her becoming a murderer. What an interesting twist for the show that would have been.

  15. I'd say the "Rory shift" was already happening in season 1. Her voice was definitely lower in the first season, but I think that's Alexis learning "acting" voice vs "normal" voice. Needing to project, emoting more with vocal cords, etc... Ie: when my husband and I speak to each other privately, our voices tend to be pitched lower than when we speak to our friends or have to give presentations etc... I kind of noticed that with most my friends and family as well. In fact, listening to Fresh Air interviews, it seems like most people in those interviews (who are in movies/tv etc...) sound different (usually lower pitched) from when they're speaking in movies or shows.

I think during the ATX reunion either the panel or one of the myriad of interviews, at some point someone (ASP) mentioned that the writers early on saw specifically what Alexis was good at (since she was so new to show business) and shifted their writing for her to better suit that. So any shift that happened in season 1 (and what you saw in S2) was probably due to that.

  16. A friend told me turned down $50 million to continue the show. Don't know where she heard that, but if true it seems he has his priorities straight. Wish he'd taken the money and stayed, though.

A guest stated it on the show. Was it Louis CK? I think it was but my brain is a bit scattered right now.

Denis Leary. It was a joke though. However the amount they offered was pretty significant IIRC. They also wanted him to stay at least a few more months but Jon was adamant about August at the latest. Comedy Central executives knew by November of last year.
