I guess I’m in the minority but I don’t think he is the weak link.   He is always welcome and funny and I hope we get more of him as the series progresses.

I almost feel like if he wanted more to do he could ask for more to do. But he's just happy to be there so he's enjoying the ride.

On the other hand I don't think this is true. His role is limited because Fishman is the weak link in the cast. No matter what they did with the character he was never going to be heavily featured.

It was purposely done because he is the weak link. The premise of season 10 wasn't DJ moves home to take care of his parents lol.

Darlene kind of was.....for a while.

They had to make Darlene down on her luck in order to have a show. If she remained successful there would have been no reason for her to move back home.

It's like how DJ is fairly successful and his role has been pretty much reduced to cameos.

I think since Darlene had to be destitute, they should have given Becky some success. She should have become a dental hygienist or something where she still thinks she is that prom queen who has an overinflated opinion of herself. Like Willie E Coyote... Doesn't fall to the ground because he doesn't look down to see there's no floor under him.

She could have really scored some good shots on Darlene having to move home and Darlene could have attacked Becky's overinflated opinion of herself.

The storyline of Becky having Sarah Chalke's baby would have been way better if her motive wasn't just about the money but instead she realizes she is aging and really regrets not having a child with Mark etc. Then she does find out she can't have children and is crushed and it's handled seriously, not in a goofy, fabrege egg manner.

    Becky wasn't upbeat and positive.

She was quite stubborn, notoriously short tempered and very independent.

She was never a Molly Tilden type.

Becky was always sarcastic. She was snarky with Roseanne over clothes, boys, chores & privileges long before she began dating Mark.

The quote coming from Darlene isn't a ringing endorsement. Since she is guilty of just about everything she accused Becky of being.

During the run of the show Becky almost always had a steady job and a reliable place to live. Darlene not so much.

I guess we watched different shows.

From season 1 Becky was the do gooding, suck up, girly girl, student council teacher's pet. Darlene was the opposite.

Becky was a snob yes, but not a cynic like Darlene. If Becky was sarcastic it was probably in response to Darlene.

Sitcoms are based on conflict. If both daughters were the same character, it would have been pretty boring.

That's the problem with the later seasons of the original run and season 10-11 of the revival. Becky and Darlene essentially became the same character.

In the revival they are both waitresses and both down on their luck and both white trash. One of them should have been successful and one not.

Becky wasn't ever a bubbly prom queen. She was levelheaded, responsible and fairly well liked in school but not overly popular just like Roseanne.

I wouldn't say Darlene had common sense, until later, and even that was a product of her relative circumstances instead of an inherent trait.

Also, during the Darlene Depression Phase the show's writing went out of its way to ridicule Becky as a character while downplaying Becky's academic & household contributions as Darlene was placed on a completely unearned pedestal.

Becky was also very sarcastic. One of the reasons Roseanne said she enjoyed fighting with Becky was because Becky yelled back just like Roseanne.

Bubbly as in upbeat and a positive outlook. In season 1-3 Becky was the prom queen type and only turned more sarcastic as Darlene turned to vegetable dip and her relationship with Mark got more serious.

The common sense thing was a quote from the show. Darlene says Becky has book smarts but if you dropped her in the wilderness, Darlene would survive but Becky would curl up and die.

Darlene wrote one poem. Besides that, she was terrible in school.

Becky got great grades, and was very close to Roseanne, yet she also possessed the same sarcastic wit as Roseanne

There were tons of episodes that highlighted Dan & Darlene's bond and the total lack of relationship between Roseanne & Darlene.

Then when Lecy leaves Darlene suddenly becomes a misunderstood wunderkind

Yes, Becky was into girl things and Darlene was the tom boy. But, Becky was also an over achieving prom queen and I don't think that's how Roseanne was ever portrayed. Darlene however, was the under achieving, "common sense smart vs book smart" with a caustic witt which seems to me what Roseanne was probably more like high school.

I thought of a good analogy. Becky was like Phyllis Zimmer. Bubbly, outgoing, teacher's pet. Darlene was like Roseanne. More dark and brooding, the Anti Phyllis.

I hate that the show retconned Darlene into being Roseanne's heir apparent, when it was originally (and arguably still is) Becky.

I disagree. Roseanne wanted to be a writer. Darlene wrote that poem and then ultimately ended up writing the comic book and going to college for writing.

Roseanne found it easier to relate to Becky but I think Darlene was always Roseanne Jr. Physically they were more similar also and both had that sarcastic witt.

I think in one of the beauty shop episodes Roseanne gets asked about her kids anf she says something like "Becky is blonde, slim and gets good grades... I'm not even sure she's my daughter" or something like that.

Her bump got too big to hide! They went from the standard baggy clothing/big bag/constant coat/untied apron trick to having her hold a comforter and film in the bathtub (one of my favorite scenes).

Semi-related, but I just found out like 2 minutes ago that Original Recipe D.J. Sal Barone is the same guy from Impractical Jokers.

"Hey Roseanne, I brought back that comforter I borrowed" lol

A sudden job loss is always devastating regardless whether the job gets outsourced or not. The show was cancelled after everyone had already shown up for work, they had zero notice. Nobody is forced to watch The Conners if they don't want to, but I, for one, am glad that people didn't lose their jobs solely due to Roseanne's big(oted) mouth. If The Conners doesn't get renewed, at least the crew will have some time to find other jobs.

That's not really how it worked though. The show was only in production for a couple months in fall 2017 then all the crew went on to other jobs in the meantime. Then it was cancelled in June 2018.

It's not like a typical 9-5 job where you go in every day 5 days a week for 52 weeks of the year.

The season was only 9 episodes IIRC so they wrote them, built the sets, rehearsed them and then filmed them all back to back in the course of a couple weeks. After that, the show wrapped and all the crew went on to the next job. They are probably in a union that arranges future work for them so they always have steady employment.

When they found out it was cancelled, it was probably more of an "awe we really liked working on that set and we will miss it" thing more than a "we have to live in a field now" thing.

  10. I think they should have stopped the show after season 10.

There is no Roseanne without Roseanne.

I always hated the argument that they kept it alive so the crew could have jobs. If there was no The Conners, I'm sure they'd be working on whatever show replaced. It's not like a steel mill closing and the jobs are going to China.

Conan O'Briens crew up and moved from New York to California and then were fired like 3 months in. I have sympathy for them.

  11. I am a hardcore Roseanne (the tv show) fan and didn't think Roseanne's (the person) absence would make The Conners unwatchable especially since she was almost a bit character in season 10.

Boy how I was wrong. As weak as season 10 was, I felt I had to watch every week. After the first The Conners episode, I think I have seen enough.

The decision is made especially easy with news that Matthew Broderick will be dating Jackie. I already dislike him because he has that over-the-top, off Broadway, thesbian Jazz hands, "Eliza with a Z!" aura about him. The number 1 reason I hate the later seasons of Roseanne is "Whacky Jackie". So them together in a relationship is a total non starter for me.

Don't forget "The Hogan Family" ---- speaking of which -----

They did make fun of recasting Becky by having the family watching "Bewitched" and complaining about the Two Darrins.

I seriously believe that they would poke fun at themselves once again.

I keep complaining to DC Comics --- I totally said that Batman was going to do that. Where's my paycheck??

I knew all along that there was another Power Girl --- are you going to pay me for this???

DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH!!!  I'M STILL WAITING!!!!!!

Sadly the revival didn't like to discuss to 80s pop culture or even references to the original series much. Doubt there will be a Sandy Duncan reference.

  13. Surprised there's been no replies.

I'm watching the Season 1 finale now.

    1. They call police cars "prowlers".

    2. DLR plate on the car Malvo "test drove". That bugged me a bit as I'm sure in the movie they meant a dealer's promotional plate. Not literally a plate that had DLR on it.

From previous episodes, and what I remember, Malvo says "Go Bears!" at the police station when he is interrogated.

I think it would be great if they could pick up some of the writers from The Middle to work on Roseanne's show.  It was obvious at times that the ones creating lines for Frankie Heck were inspired by Roseanne.  I hope the network releases the show so it can be picked up elsewhere.

I would watch parts of The Middle after Roseanne.

The original Roseanne was effortless. All the dialogue seemed natural. You bought them as a real family.

The Middle was the exact opposite. Every line was so archly written. Rapid fire witty one liner after witty one liner. It's like they were just reciting the lines from cue cards off camera and then throw in a quirky little smirk at the end of each sentance. Other than physical resemblance, I didn't find them to be a family whatsoever. Every one was a weird little character on their own private island.

  15. Is Sandy Duncan still alive? Be funny to cast her in the first episode of season 2 without Roseanne. Throw in a Jason Bateman cameo with his girlfriend Valerie Harper. Boys fall for women just like their mothers afterall.

Seriously though, it's sad to think there could have been another 3-4 seasons of our beloved show. Who would have EVER thought that was possible? Most classic sitcoms ever got was a reunion special.

Then again, the revival was pretty tacky. Not season 9 bad, but a solid season 8 for sure.

  16. Remember when she said she was deleting her Twitter account as a result of what she said about Valerie Jerrit?

Pretty obvious in hindsight that was just a vane attempt at saving the show. Now that the show is cancelled, she's still on Twitter spewing hateful things.

I'm also writing fanfiction for Becky, and Mark mostly set in seasons 3 and 4.

The username i have on here is the same one as my Ao3 username

Always wished we saw more of their courtship.

Their relationship was only portrayed as hot/cold whenever they needed some tension between Roseanne and Becky.
