  1. I think that would have backfired on her, I'm sure Abi was still talking about the two votes he threw her way, and Woo wasn't original Bayon, he was the easy choice for her insurrection.

Maybe they talked about it (voting out Savage) until production said "you keep saying 'Savage' when you mean Woo. It will confuse the viewers at home. Please be careful, you are voting out Woo on the same episode we lose Terry, not Savage.  Right?"

  2. Sorry, shouldn't have made it sound like his son was cured. I have no idea about the details of his son's condition, and I probably wouldn't understand it i I did know.  But as far as I can tell based on what's been on social media, the surgery was as succesful as they could hope for.  Long-term, we'll see.

  3. Sometimes the crazy you know is easier to deal with than the unknown nutjob.

Oh, that reminds me -- Republican debate tonight :)

I understand RC's point because while she would at least know what Survivor Abi is bringing, what Abi is bringing is far worse than average Survivor crazies. While Abi at her Abi-est may not be the worst we've ever seen, statistically speaking it's worse than you'd get from a random draw.

  4. I don't know how I'd stack up Abi against J'Tia or the Hantzes.  J'Tia seemed like she was friendly enough, just surprisingly incompetent.  She had a bad moment dumping out the rice, but I don't remember her being vicious.

Russell was a jerk, but I think you didn't have to worry about his feelings.  He had his game plan set up and was an arrogant little troll about it. But I can imagine him having a friendly chat around the camp when nothing particularly game-related was happening (i.e., he already had his pockets stuffed full of idols.)  I was never sure what to make of Brandon. He seemed to not walk in the same world as the rest of us, but if you were friendly to him (and didn't make him feel evil in his loins because you were too pretty), he would follow you around like my dog when she can't see what I have in my hand.

I don't know that any of them would be as stressful to be around as Abi as she's depicted on the show.  The one I'm more inclined to compare her to is Na'Onka, but I haven't sat through Nicaragua since it aired. Some of Na'Onka's evil may have faded in my memory over time.

  5. I for one appreciate your bravery phlebas! ;)

Thanks :)  And I don't want to overstate my affection for the Kappenbabe.  I pretty much forgot she existed when Danni Boatwright showed up.  But I am enjoying this season of Survivor: Finder of Lost Loves

  6. Please don't think that voicing an opinion contrary to some others' requires bravery!

    Yes it does!

(That was me being brave again.  You're welcome!)

Anyhow, I hope this last episode is a harbinger of more screen time and maneuvering for Kimmi.  Justify my love, K-dawg!

  7. I'm not really embarrassed.  Just making a brave and powerful admission against the implacable tide of Kimmi Criticism here :)

I kinda had a crush on Eliza early on, too.  She reminded me of the kinds of girls I was attracted to in high school.  That one didn't survive the season.

We should start a topic about Survivor crushes.  I'm curious to know which of you had it bad for damn Judd in damn Guatemala man.  I'm looking at you, LadyChatts.

  8. T-Bird was on the podcast this week. She is sharp and fun to listen to. I don't agree with her take on Terry but she has clearly been thinking about the game and how to play. I would love to see her back on the show.

It's interesting you feel that way.  I'm sort of the opposite.

I didn't remember her at all from Africa's original airing.  I rewatched it earlier this year before they announced the Second Chances thing, and found her to be a good enough player -- she did make it to #4 -- I mostly forgot her again five minutes after she got voted out.

Then Rob and Josh and Stephen and everyone else were so sure she was a shoo-in for making the cut and I did not understand it. I figured I was missing something crucial about her game that made her one of the all-timers to everyone else.  When she didn't make it and Rob & Josh were stunned, i was all "ah, I got it -- it wasn't just me." I figured (and to be honest, still kinda think) that she wasn't an amazing player so much as she was Rob's friend and he wasn't looking at her objectively or through the eyes of someone not steeped in the Survivor world so much.

I was kind of disappointed in her interview.  She sounds very kind and friendly, and obviously understands the game, but nothing she said struck me as insightful or showed a glimpse of an amazing Survivor brain.  I'm not trying to insult her, but she feels overpraised.

    All IMHO of course.

P.S. I have similar feelings about Shane, although I at least remember him.  Not sorry to be spared that icon of "good TV"

  9. Agreed, but we've already had two African-American winners -- Vecepia from Marquesas and Earl from Fiji.

Yes. Vecepia in in season 4, Earl in season 14. Fiji was 9 years ago.  To stick to their schedule, Sabrina should have won season 24, but she had to face the fierce headwind of Hurricane Kimspradlin.

They did try over and over with James.

  10. Not crazy about parts of the boot list, but I like Jeremy and Survivor is way overdue for an African-American winner.  If that list plays out, at least there will be some characters I hate getting some serious frowny face.

  11. I am from New York. Personally, if anything, I find people from the South to be generally more intelligent than people from my region, who THINK they know everything but are largely misinformed and barely capable of independent or logical thought.

We only let the smart ones talk to the damned yankees.

  12. I finished listening to Randy on RHAP.  Fun interview, but remembering how much fun I did NOT have when he was on before and comparing it to how much fun I am not having with Abi-Maria now… I think I learned I am uncomfortable watching these damaged characters on Survivor.

Do you guys remember when Anna Nicole Smith had a reality show not long before she died? She was a mess. She seemed unaware of her surroundings and unable to carry on a conversation. The few minutes I spent watching it were filled with me going “put down the camera and get help.” It was awful.

I don’t mind the villains and backstabbers.  Load me up with all the KaosKass types you like, it’s fine. Those are people that have a strategy which doesn’t include being likable.  Maybe the it is playing that up. But when you bring out someone like Brandon Hantz or Shane Powers, it feels to me like you’re capitalizing on something broken, and I hate watching it.

Randy was the same way in his two seasons.  He said on RHAP that he was in a bad place and that he’s much better now, but as the conversation went on, he sounded more and more like the caustic misanthrope I remembered.

I know I’m only seeing the barest slice of a fraction of his life. I know it’s all heavily edited by people more interested in a story than the truth. But whatever the truth of Randy is in real life, the Randy character just makes me sad.

Abi is the same.  The TV Abi just depresses me, and CBS insisting that she’s good TV feels like exploitation. Of course it’s more complicated than that, but these are all lizard brain reactions to what I’m seeing, I guess.

I depressed myself. Back to the coffee.

(Also: As for Survivor changes, I'd love to see the auction change so that the immunity advantage and the family letters are hidden and are surprises, so everyone who sits on their cash waiting for the end gets screwed)

  13. You know what?  Fine.

    FINE.

I'm now actively rooting for Abi to not only make it to the FTC, but to win. For reals. We have one player after another arrogant enough to think they can work with Abi. "Noooooo, she won't blow up my plans.  We have the same goals! I can convince her I'll stay faithful, even if I do make eye contact with another player. And when it's Abi and me at Final Tribal Council, they won't even bother to ask me questions. Probst will hand me my check and loan me his Sea Doo to go home." That will be fun.

Abi will spend the next two months short-circuiting everything I enjoy watching about this show, all because everyone thinks she's a Sociopathic Golden Ticket. Let Tasha or Terry or Kass or whomever take Abi to the end.  Stand in front of a jury full of people they screwed over in favor of the Brazilian Bugs Bunny Villain. Tell them how your game was honorable or strategic. Try to counter Abi's argument: "I said you were dead and I was riiiiiiiiiiiiiight."

The season will be ruined. But maybe this will teach future casts that dragging the most unlikeable player available isn't the bag of magic beans they think it is.

Go, Abi!  Screw over Savage next!

  14. So many people who know Abi in person have nothing but good things to say about her.  But we've seen this same paranoid, neurotic, vindictive demon in two seasons.  As sweet as Real Abi may be, she also has that in her. I guess we all do, and Abi lacks a filter when she's bored and hungry.

I wonder if Shii Ann is somewhere, watching Abi and thinking "oh, THAT'S a Shii-Devil"

  15. I know we may have to wait a few more weeks, but I'm eager to see Kass when she actually has to start playing the game. I never thought she was evil or anything in her first season, just cutthroat.  Rocking the boat when you're not going to TC and the tribes can switch up at any time might not make sense to her now. But nothing I've seen from her makes me think she's trying to change anything fundamental.

We'll find out soon, I hope. Once the cameras turn away from Fred Flintstone and his sidekick Over-caffeinated Chihuahua.
