The thing is Simone’s execution is super high even with her difficulty. She truly can do the most difficult elements. I understand your point if gymnasts were throwing badly performed yet difficult skills but she was not. The problem with everyone performing easier skills and everyone doing everything cleanly is it becomes a LOT more subjective than it already is.

Elena Mukhina. What’s truly awful is her first thought after getting injured was something like “thank god I don’t have to do that anymore”. The culture of this sport has needed a big, big overhaul for a long time now. I don’t need to see athletes potentially crushed under impossible expectations just to enjoy that fleeting glory of a gold medal. The entire mentality behind this needs to change now and if it starts with what Simone did, that also leaves a huge mark on the sport as much as a bunch of gold medals does.

My guess is much much better. That ridiculous rule needs to go now.

Suni could very well be out of medals for UB. That is unexpected for sure but the Olympics are hard and all kinds of crazy stuff happens.

They absolutely should have a one touch warm up and it’s so crazy they do not. I agree it has a lot to do with what happened to Jade. Sucks.

I just saw the slo-no of Rebeca’s Cheng and she landed outside the lines again. Her Cheng is so glorious otherwise. What was her second vault?

Poor Jade! at least she can still medal on floor though! I’ll be pulling for her. What a time for a mistake like that. That probably almost never happens to her. Olympics, man.

I guess it could be a good idea for some who like the downtime but I sincerely doubt Simone is one of those people. If she could have been having fun with friends it would take some of the stress off guaranteed. But sitting alone in your room for hours on end with nothing but social media to scroll through could be very very bad. I’m sure the Kara Eaker situation didn’t help either.

She has some beautiful gymnastics. I read she is doing an Amanar for her second vault in vault finals and even though its a bit of a risk because of her knee I hope she crushes it. If Simone can’t vault for gold (and I seriously cannot imagine she’s going to do the final) then I’m Team Andrade.

To me it sounds like a candy name. In fairness though, the “yips” sounds like a type of hiccup.

Completely agree. I know that feeling and you know its a lost cause with the way people decide their opinion and then can never be convinced otherwise but its so, so hard just to let it go. She doesn’t owe anyone an explanation with video proof and it makes me sad to see she feels she does. But yeah, if falls like that were happening in team finals there would be no medal at all. And then people would have torn her to shreds for her poor performance (those people don’t care at all if she injures herself). She really did do the exact right thing for the team.

Simone trying her hardest to work through her twisties. Unfortunately, it seems they are affecting her on every event she says. But she did get access to a foam pit. However she also says it has taken weeks to get over them in the past.

Just watched Rebeca’s vault in prime time….it is so good. Even my husband was like WOW. I guess without that penalty the score would have been 15.4. I assume its because she landed slightly out of the lines.

I think Rebecca’s beam, while performed with a great deal of confidence may have had a missed connection and some deductions on split form. I thought all the beam scores were kinda low. I also thought Andrade’s vault was significantly better than Carey’s and I can’t believe there was only a tenth separating them. The judges need video review or something. In the end, the right person won. I wonder now what Suni’s next move will be? She’s supposed to go to Auburn.

It doesn’t. Ultimately, none of it matters.

I mean, I think we’re all aware of that. But people are allowed to notice things and post about them. I’ve seen the same thing in other gymnastics forums. It happens all over sports. No one is trying to take Suni’s medal away. However, if Simone was on her A game, there’s no question she wins. People on their A game aren’t making mistakes. And as B game Simone’s errors in her quals beat every score here there is no doubt in my mind that A game Simone wins. A game Simone is unbeatable and it’s just a fact.

I was completely blown away by it. Maybe chilling in Italy is good for her.

Lee 57.433 Andrade 57.298 Melnikova 57.199 These are the final scores from today. Biles qualification score: 57.731 I have no idea what your first sentence is referring to. Biles qualified first, not Andrade. Andrade’s qual score was 57.399. Its an observation. People extrapolate from these numbers all the time. They also did it when Simone lost to Suni on night two of the Trials. It’s not a huge deal to make this observation and to feel wistful for what might have been. I’m pretty sure Suni isn’t scrolling (I hope she isn’t).

Simone’s qualification scores were higher than Suni’s winning score tonight so that could-have-beens continue to suck. I’m so happy for Suni and I like her bars routine better than Nina’s. Nina’s routine is fine but some of her form (feet) is not that great.

I would have liked to see Andrade pull it out because Brazil has never won a medal let alone a gold but Suni was always a strong possibility so this outcome is not surprising at all.
