I'm with everyone else with my "MARTHA!!!!" reaction. I was wondering why we were focusing so long on this random woman, and then Martha! What a great surprise! Maybe we will see her again and see how she is doing in the USSR, or maybe we were just checking in on her to show us that she made it to Moscow, either way works for me. I would be happy with seeing more Martha, but if this is the last time we see her, I'm alright with that. It looks like she is living her life, but isn't very happy. Going from supermarkets in DC to supermarkets in the USSR must be a hell of a transition.

I love how almost everyone seems to have had the same reaction of shock and excitment at seeing Martha alive. It's also a great tease for the audience, because now that we know she's alive that means there's the potential to see her again. It lets the audience play a guessing game/debate whether or not we'll see her again.

Oleg is still all kinds of sexy. Nobody looks as good as him walking down the street in a billowing black boat looking troubled. The poor guy knows how he screwed he is, and where this is all probably going to end up, but he is still trying to do his job damn it! I give him props for actually trying to do his job and make the system run smoother all the while having this giant cloud over his head. I don't think he cared what the woman was up to, he is just trying to figure out who her connection is. I'm not sure what exactly his plan is, but I hope he gets to do something good before he gets his one way trip to the gulag.

100% Yes! He's got this whole troubled brooding weight of the world on his shoulders thing going on, and he's still incredibly attractive. My guess is that Oleg may take refuge in his work. He may be the type to put all of his troubles aside and focus on work as an escape. Also, maybe he hopes he will find something during his investigation that will give him leverage/an ace in the hole. I agree that Oleg isn't after the store manager, but instead is trying to use her to get to bigger fish. I'm not as convinced as others are that his story will end with him in the gulag.

And really that's just the impression he's trying to convey to the market manager, since who he's actually after are the Party bigwigs who are entangled in the scheme. But admitting that would amount to an acknowledgment that he's not just a humble Food Police agent but an actual member of the KGB.

Agreed. What Oleg is doing reminds me of the way law enforcement agencies in this country go after drug kingpins or organized crime. They try to build the case step by step and go up as any many levels as they can to ultimatley capture and punish the highest ranking member of the organization that they can.

I'm not sure if it was Clarke's landlord or the people from Martha's building, but, it seems like there was a sketch.  They also discovered that the ID of Clarke was a dead man, right?

That sounds right to me. My guess is that for Stan it's a low priority investigation and on the back burner for now.

I agree. It's great to see that she's alive and have some idea of what kind of life she's leading. If they show her again and give us more details, I would be okay with that. I would be equally satisfied if this is the last time we see her.

Which reminds me, what exactly was Oleg trying to get out of that store manager? Learn who brought the goods? Normally, they would be delivered absolutely legally, it's just that most of them would never find their way on the store shelves. And if anyone asked, the store could always claim that it sold out quickly.

My understanding is that Oleg was trying to find out who her supplier was. He thought she was bribing someone to get the best quality/rare food. He wasn't interested in what she was doing. He was after the bigger fish, the person accepting the bribe.

Oleg!  A bit shallow there, because I love just watching that man walk.  Aside from that, this is another story that interests me.  I feel so bad for him, guy did the right thing, and now he's screwed no matter what.  Run Oleg, tell mom and dad to go "on vacation" then meet them somewhere and start a new life, at least by the end of the show.

You make me feel so much better about having a bit of crush on Oleg. It feels kind of wrong, but I can't help it. Oleg is one of the characters I want to see survive and get whatever passes for a happy ending on this show. I just want him to be okay.

  4. "Manhatten Queens" is one of my favorite episodes because Baker gets an actual storyline. I wish the writers would do more episodes like that for her. I am pretty sure Garrett has never been an officer and is someone from outside that world, as opposed to Frank or Sid.

It would be great to see an episode where Nikki shadows a public defender for a day or two as part of a class assignment. She did not get to pick the role she would be shadowing for a day, but she's not upset with it. The episode would include some time in a courtroom, where Nikki sees the public defender up against Erin.

Over-reacting is not like them, and even if the Center (and Gabriel) find this plausible, I'd hope cooler heads would prevail.

Elizabeth tends to overact, but Philip is a calming more level headed incident. After Regean was shot, Elizabeth was sure it was a coup of some kind, while Philip took a more wait and see approach. He also suspected it was more a lone gunman/nutcase scenario (although it's been awhile since I watched the episode).

It's incredible to me that we're four episode into an eight-episode run and we've still seen almost no movement in the story of what would give Sun its place in history.  Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee are still off doing their own thing and Elvis hasn't done more than make a delivery and continue to moon after a girl.

Here is my prediction for where the series is heading episode by episode. This prediction is based on the end point/episode 8 being the Million Dollar Quartet session in December of 1956. I could total see a version of this miniseries where the last image is the actors recreating the Million Dollar Quartet picture. It changes to the real picture, and then we get title cards with a brief summary of carreer highlights of the lead characters.

Episode 5: Lewis attends Southwest Bible Institute. Elvis makes the record for his mother. Johnny Cash is discharged from the army and marries Vivian Liberto.

Episode 6: Lewis is expelled from Southwest Bible Institute. Elvis starts recording for Sun. Cash moves to Memphis.

Episode 7: Lewis starts recording for Sun Records. Cash starts recording for Sun Records. Elvis signs with Colonel Tom Parker.

My feeling is rooted in the fact that I see Oleg and Stan as very similar people. They both have a private "sense of honor" and seem to really want to "do the right thing". Oleg did that when warning Stan. I could see Stan returning the favor in some manner.

I agree with you. Stan and Oleg see each other as equals. It's a worthy opponent type scenario. If the roles had been reversed, Stan would have done the same thing.

Poor Oleg. He is all kinds of screwed, just for trying to do the right thing. He is smart enough and decent enough to actually make a real difference in his government, but now, with the CIA looking to trap him, it looks like this isn't going to turn out well for him. "Hey Oleg, we totally appreciate the huge solid you did us. Now, could you please continue to help us unwillingly, or we will make sure you and your family get a one way trip to the gulag?" His poor mom. She will probably lose both her sons to political bullshit now. Also, shallow, but Oleg has somehow gotten even HOTTER this season. Damn.

I appreciate Stan trying to have Oleg's back, even though it looks like he wont be able to help much. It also seems like his bosses just don't Get It. They seem to think Stan is making a big deal about Oleg possibly getting killed or worse because he's trying to make a power play, or because he's pissed at his new bosses, not just because Stan really just respects Oleg and doesn't want to see him get killed for doing the right thing.

I'd like to think that Oleg is smart enough to find a way out of his problem. It is shallow, but Oleg is hot and one of my favorite parts of the series. There is a great deal of respect between Stan and Oleg, which is part of what makes their scenes together so great.

Henry has always seemed more suited to spy work, but maybe that is exactly why the writers decided on Paige.

I know the show won't go this far into the future, but it would be fantastic if Henry decided to become an FBI agent all on his own. Between when his training ends and he starts his first assignment he goes home for a visit. Elizabeth and Philip tell him they need to have a serious talk in the laundry room.

"You think your mom is bad, mine is a Russian spy and let me tell you about this one time she killed a guy in front of me. That was soooo embarrassing!"

Why did P&E have Henry? Wasn't one child enough to reinforce the fiction of happy, little American family. Couldn't the Center have gotten them a Tuan of their very own if they needed another kid?

I need to see proof that Martha is still alive.

But Paige could always get out of it by saying she was drunk and didn't mean it. Her cover lie might be something like, Henry and I were watching a spy movie, or she was reading an espionage thriller for fun. Elizabeth and Philip had sex resulting in a pregnancy. They decided to keep the baby instead of terminating the pregnancy or putting the baby up for adoption. I would love to see what Martha is doing in the Soviet Union, assuming that she is still alive. It does not have to be a season long story-arc. I'd be happy with a single scene.

  10. As for the project as whole, I think the opening number "Bye, Bye Birdie" is rather harmless. It doesn't need to be there, but I won't be upset if they include. I will be yelling and swearing at my TV if they use the stupid subplot about the Russian Ballet. That whole subplot is the reason why I thought the movie was so much longer than it was.

Once you've picked "Bye Bye Birdie," you're pretty much locked into a specific time frame. I can't see "The Telephone Hour" reworked for the age of social media. Do you replace the part about Ed Sullivan with Conrad Birdie's YouTube Channel? There are some works you can easily adapt and change the time period/other elements. This show isn't one of them. Also, they didn't change the era "Hairspray" was set in, so why would they change the era for this production?

I was glad that they addressed the possibility of Stuart and Raj sharing an apartment because I was thinking the same thing. And it would be kind of nice if they found an apartment in the main building. Maybe one floor above either Leonard & Penny or Sheldon & Amy.

This would be fantastic, because it would be the perfect set-up for a super cliche sitcom plot that I love. Here's what I'm picturing. Stuart and Raj live directly above Leonard & Penny or Sheldon & Amy. Stuart and Raj overhear something (maybe they mishear a conversation, or maybe they only hear part of a conversation.) They leap to the wrong conclusion. This leads to Raj and Stuart ultimately talking to their downstairs neighbors about the issue. Stuart and Raj think they are talking about topic X while Leonard & Penny or Sheldon & Amy think they are talking about topic y. I think it would be wonderful.

That is absolutely true. In college my roommate and I would order take-out, and we didn't always split the bill exactly. Usually, we would just pay for what we ate, or split the bill depending on what we ordered but if we didn't have the right amount, one night one of us would just put in a little more, and another time the other would just put in a little more. We're talking about sums under $5. We called it roommate economics.

I love this idea. There would be two geeky girls in what was Leonard and Sheldon's apartment (now Penny and Leonard's). One of them would be more into science/sci-fi and the other would be more into fantasy. This is easy to show through t-shirts/props (one of them is wearing/carrying something "Star Trek" or "Firefly" related and the other is wearing/carrying something "Harry Potter" or "Lord of the Rings" ) They would see a totally hunky guy move into the apartment that was Penny's (and is currently Sheldon and Amy's).

If someone is an undercover agent for the FBI, they are most likely not allowed to say what they do (because of the whole undercover thing). However, once they are no longer an undercover agent and are going to be spending the rest of their career behind a desk in headquarters or a field office, I would assume it would be okay to tell people you work for the FBI, just not reveal anything specific about what you do or any state secrets/classified information.

Abortion was not constitutionally illegal in all 50 states before Roe v. Wade

Correct. It varied state by state. It was illegal in Texas, but legal in New York. What Roe v. Wade did (or was supposed to do) was create a uniform guide/code for all of the states. The decision was supposed to indicate what kinds of restrictions were constitutional, and when during the pregnancy limits on abortion were constitutional. You skipped Casey where the standard became "whether a state abortion regulation has the purpose or effect of imposing an "undue burden," which is defined as a "substantial obstacle in the path of a woman seeking an abortion before the fetus attains viability." (https://www.oyez.org/cases/1991/91-744) The most recent case, Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, created a new standard. A restriction on abortion must have a medical/safety reason for existing. The regulation must in some way exist to protect the life or health of the mother, not just exist to make it harder to have a legal abortion .
