  1. I have never wanted to throw a book across the room more than Tana French's In the Woods. Unlikeable characters, obvious "twist", and one of the most frustrating endings I have ever read.

I just read the wiki article on "In The Woods"... that book sounds horrible.  The ending, the people, pretty much everything would make me rage about the time wasted reading it. You have my utmost sympathy!

  2. FWIW, my good friend swears by Wen - only thing she'll use. I think she gets it from QVC.

I'm thinking of going platinum (I have light brown/darkish blonde as a natural color), I current;y color it a light ash blonde. Does anyone know what the average upkeep timetable is? Every couple of weeks? I would prefer to do it at home, though I likely won't but can you upkeep roots at home if you still get the initial color at a salon?

  3. The one that has the most lasting memory on me was Henry on MASH. Even now I start crying at the beginning of the show. My dad and I used to watch the show together, it was one of the only good memories I have of him. I remember him being pretty upset when they killed off Henry as well.

When Gee died in Homicide: The Movie. That was bad.

I also remember really hating Tasha Yar being killed off of Star Trek:TNG. It didn't make any sense and completely sucked.

  4. My favorite non-fiction/true crime book of all time is Homicide: A year on the Killing Streets by David Simon, I normally end up re-reading it once a year. It's not necessarily about one specific crime/criminal, but a year a Baltimore Sun reporter spent with the Homicide division in Baltimore.

Does anyone remember the McMartin preschool trials in the 80's? When I was in middle school I think I read a book from my library about this. I still rememebr this book and the accusations, it was just so vivid and descriptive. Maybe I just read it at a certain time, but that book has stuck with me more than alomost any other and I'm almost 40. I can't remember the name of the book though.

  5. I'm actually a big fan of the nice girl/nice guy. I'm not a huge fan of the bad guy with a heart of gold crap. The trope where the guy/girl is a dick 99.9% of the time and treats every one like shit and then does one quasi-nice thing ao they must be the most awesome person evercan go fuck itself. Having watched Dawson's Creek and The Big Bang Theory I 1.) thought everyone on Dawson's Creek acted like a self-absorbed asshole. They were teenagers. Having worked with teenagers for 15 years, many are self-absorbed assholes most of the time. And then the decent human being they actually are (hopefully/sometimes) wins out. 2.) I never got the felling that the show was putting out the idea that Leonard "deserved" Penny.

Personally, I think it's a lot harder to play the nice girl/guy. The idea that it's boring, uninspired, must be a jerk and hiding something is so rampant and an easy place for writers to go to, no one seems to try to make the nice one's interesting.

  6. Ahh, deep fried pies. Chocolate is my favorite, cherry, then lemon. The crust is they key, there has to be just the right amount of bite, too soft and it doesn't balance the filling, too hard and it just tastes stale. The glaze is also tricky, some nowadays just have too much. Some company still makes them in certain places (I've bought them rather recently), I want to say tastycake, but I'm not sure. Hostess had the best recipe when I was a kid, but they changed it at some point.

My parents always made us dress up to fly (and this was in the 80s/90s, not the dawn of the aviation era). So I wore Sunday clothes, pantyhose and dress shoes on long flights as a matter of course. The first time I flew in a plane wearing jeans was in college, and it was heaven. :)

My parents made me dress up to fly. When I was a kid I would fly cross country and back every summer by myself. Always wore dress and cute little shoes. I still dress up (sort of) to fly. Now I'll wear jeans, but they must be nice jeans, and typically a long sleeved shirt of some sort and knee-high heeled boots. The idea of wearing shorts or a skirt without pantyhose on a plane ... I just can't.

  8. Here's one, Gibbs from NCIS. Not Mark Harmon, I love him, and I so want to love Gibbs, but they write him as such an insufferable, sanctimonios asshole. And he's never wrong. Even when he is wrong, he's still never wrong. Drives me up the fucking wall. I stopped watching the show quite a few seasons ago, and now can only watch as long as it is not a Gibbs centered episode.

  9. I remember when I was growing up in Las Vegas (Nellis AFB) my mom would get this ice cream flavor, dutch chocolate, that was fantastic. This was in the early 80's, and though I've tried other dutch chocolate ice cream's since then, nothing has captured that taste. I'm probably going to not explain this very well, but it wasn't sweet like chocolate ice cream now. It had, what I can only describe as a "bite" to it, not bitter, and not a dark chocolate flavor. I always want to day it kind of reminded me of cocoa powder versus a creamy cocoa taste. I have a friend who grew up in Colombia, and like me she's not a huge ice cream fan, but we got to talking about the food one time and I mentioned this ice cream flavor. She looked astonished and said she knew exactly what I meant, she had it when she was a kid and young adult (she's a few years older than me so 80's would still be right). She has never had it since either.

Anyone know what I'm talking about or am I just crazy??!!

  10.

I have always, always liked Pamela Anderson. There is something about her that suggests that she's smarter than a lot of people would give her credit for due to her association with Playboy, and she's always come across as a very nice person in interviews, with a great sense of humor. She's okay in my book.

I've always liked her too!  My problem with Baywatch was Hasselhoff, not her. And VIP was awesome. She always came across as a hell of a lot more savvy than she got credit for and she just seems like she would be a fun person to go to dinner with, just hang.

  11.

THIS is definitley a film, that should be viewed unspoiled.

So glad I got to experience it that way.

Ehh, I don't know. I read the book, and I have a habit of looking up spoilers before I see movies, and I enjoyed. My three friends who went with never read the book (I don't think two them knew it was a book), and they all hated it. Mileage, you know.

  12.

here's nothing better than an in-season Texas peach.

Except for an in-season GA peach. ;)

To add to my list above:

    - cheddar cheese

    - egg salad

    - cereal

    - seltzer water

    - cool whip or fresh whipped cream, but not the canned stuff

    - indian river grapefruit

    - white bread. Not fancy white bread, just plain, white butterbread.

    - macarons

  13. I am not a huge ice cream fan, but one thing I miss is Ben and Jerry's cashew ice cream. It was a perfect blend of sweet cream with a little salty from the cashew's...yum. I have not been able to find ANYTHING like it.

On another, UO, not, I am one of the rare breeds who don't like a whole lot of "stuff" (My word is crap) in food. The trend of filling ice creak with swirls/chunks/cores and everything else just irritates me. I don't even like chocolate chip cookies. When I was a kid I used to eat the cookie batter and spit the chips out. Nuts I'm okay with, but still not a whole lot of them. However, filed under the contradictions folder, I do like Haagan Daaz chocolate chocolate chip ice cream. I think because rather than little chips the chocolate if almost like shavings.

  14. Beyond the fact that Amscot in and of itself annoys me, the commercial is just stupid. Some little kid is playing with his "lego" toys or whatever while mom tells him to hurry up they have to run errands. He spouts off that they should go to thet "blue and yellow place". All good until they show the toy he's playing with...it's an Amscot building. With the name prominently displayed. WTF??!!

Mom, your child is an idiot.

  15. Until I was in my mid-20's I neve knew anything other than Miracle Whip, it was the only thing my family used. When I had potato salad at friend's house I spit it out and thought it had gone bad. Turns out it was mayo. I only use miracle whip and I found the lite mayo at Subway(can't do Jimmy Johns since I read about their owner being a trophy hunter) tastes like miracle whip, so now I always ask for yellow mustard, oil/vinegar and extra lite mayo. They look at me like I'm insane!

  16. My massive UO's: I love JJ, if she, Morgan, and Rossi were gone I'd be out. I also don't think there's been that much emphasis on her when compared the the S1-2 that was the Reid/Gideon hour. And I like Reid, but I don't think he's the most amazing thing ever. And the whole Maeve storyline honestly made me stop watching more than any other plot since it's inception.

I do wish there would be more episodes about the team actually being profilers, but I don't necessarily mind the occasional episodes that are more unsub heavy.

I'm meh on JLH, she's fine. I just don't see the actress gelling with the cast. I don't know, something seems off.

  17.  Most of mine have been mentioned but her you go...

    Hmm, current shows:

    - Melinda May from Agents of Shield

    - Abbie Mills from Sleepy Hollow

    - Winona from Justified (this may be more Natalie Zea, I would follow her anywhere)

    - JJ Jareau, Criminal Minds

    Past shows:

    - Ainsley Hayes, West Wing. I still want to be her!

    - Dana Scully, X-Files

    - Kay Howard, Homicide: Life on the Street

    - Brenda Barrett - General Hospital. She drove me nuts, but damn could Vanessa Marcil sell that character. She was perfection.

    - Felicia Jones, General Hospital.
