I am finding this with younger children as well.  I will put on a movie or a TV show that I remembered loving at their age and sometimes they love it too (Disney's The Three Lives of Thomasina from 1963) and sometimes they give me this glazed look and ask if we can watch something else (The Monkees, The Brady Bunch and any western TV series up to and including Little House on the Prairie).

The Monkees??  A glazed look?  Heresy!!  Of course the show was aimed at tweens and teens so maybe the kids didn't understand it yet.  When the group was becoming big again for their 20th anniversary, lots of kids 12 and up would see it on MTV and asking their parents about this "new" show!

Sometimes though a past show, regardless of genre is often remembered more for the chemistry of its cast and/or unique setting than anything else.  Sometimes the writing or format doesn't hold up.  I have found that the early season half hour episodes of Gunsmoke hold up fairly well.  I've been catching them on cable recently and because they don't waste time and are so well written - they're almost mini movies!

Brady Bunch I agree is a bit treacly during the first season (according to sources I've read elsewhere, it was supposed to be a bit more dramatic than it ultimately became which annoyed Robert Reed who wanted out after season 2).  I also think some of the issues the show dealt with were so much lighter compared to today.   Remember in the Brady Bunch films Jan was complaining to her counselor (played by RuPaul!) that she resented being the middle child (echoing an episode from the original show), while the counselor asked her if she had bigger issues like drugs or pregnancy!

Does anyone remember The Phoenix? The main character was played by Judson Scott, whose biggest claim to fame was being cast as Kahn's son in Star Trek II. He did the occasional part after that and then kinda disappeared? Which is too bad because he was a pretty, pretty man. The show lasted a whole 5 episode and yet it still remains in my memory. Pretty sure it was never rebroadcast or released on any form of media. I think it was just too esoteric for the ordinary person. There were religious overtones and it was drawn in part from von Däniken's Chariots of the Gods. About 15 years before it's time.

Definitely!!  I watched the show and was really interested in how it was going to play out (though I do remember an episode in which the character found where his match was supposed to be but finds out at the last minute that she had been moved) and I was disappointed it vanished so quick.  Same for Judson Scott - except for a few roles I caught him in afterwards, he seemed to fall off the radar.

Rupert Murdoch and Ann Lesley Smith Call Off Their Engagement

Those May/December romances are chancy at best.

Seriously though, I wouldn't be surprised if his kids (who run his empire now - or at least FNC) told him to call it off.  They do NOT like to share.

  4. Something from Entertainment Lawyer:

    Quote

Dark Winter: This A- list actor has not been seen in several months. He is an Oscar winner/nominee. He is also someone who has always been a little bit on the unusual side. Last year he became fascinated with living off the grid. He thought it was something he could see for himself and he worked a lot in a short amount of time, to allow himself to be gone. It felt like he was in town because he kept having new projects come out, but he did those before he left. He went to Alaska and went to live on a homestead. He has been there all winter and the only time anyone hears from him is when he goes to a town that is a several hour drive from where he is staying. That is what he said. What he said though, doesn't match the reality. Apparently he had a cell phone with him and there is a Starlink at the homestead, because he has been posting to some very strange message boards about what he is doing this winter. Most people on the message board have no idea who he is or what his job is. Instead, they see him as a fellow homesteader who apparently this winter got one of the daughters of his host pregnant. The host has ten daughters and several sons, and would lose his mind if he knew his daughter got pregnant when she is unmarried. Did I mention this group of homesteaders is super religious? One of the sons knows about the pregnancy and has been keeping the actor from leaving until he marries the daughter. No one in LA knows anything, but the people on the message board are following his drama in real time and apparently are glued to any new events that happen.

    How will this end??

    Quote

This A- list mostly movie actress who is an Oscar winner/nominee, not only had a falling out with her best friend, but the best friend is sleeping with the significant other of the actress. That isn't even the reason they had the falling out.

    and finally:

    Quote

This foreign born A- list comic/actor/host is being accused of sexually assaulting a teacher in a class he was taking from her. He paid extra for private classes.

  5. Caught one from a rerun of Last Man Standing:

In the episode, Mike's middle daughter Mandy is dating a boy named Terrance.  Naturally he hates everything Mike stands for.  First we get some Hell No moments earlier in the episode like insulting her parents in their own home and telling Mike how wrong he is to hunt innocent animals.  Then after a date with Mandy, he tricks her into taking him to Outdoor Man after hours where he vandalizes an antique stuffed bear (shot by Teddy Roosevelt).  Mike gets a clue about the boy's intentions and goes straight to Outdoor Man to look for him.  Eventually he catches him and the little weasel, who isn't sorry for the damage he had done or that he used Mandy to take an ideological poke at Mike.

The Hell Yeah! moment is when Mike gives Terrance his punishment which certainly fits the crime!  He has him dressed like Teddy Roosevelt and has him tell a crowd a history lesson on his accomplishments (including his conservation efforts).  When he asks Mike how long he has to keep doing it, Mike tells him, "When the bear says you can leave."  When Terrance mentions that the bear doesn't talk, Mike responds, "Well there ya go!!".

Loved that!  While Terrance was entitled to his beliefs, using Mandy and destroying private property was not cool.

It’s one of the reasons I don’t watch the show anymore: they’ve frozen the kids’ ages, yet they have stories built around them as if they were teenagers. I always thought they should have started gradually aging them years ago. Not that one season needed to equal one year of time. But I thought that tween and teenaged Bart and Lisa would open up some desperately needed story potential. New teachers, new friends, new situations. Not to mention being able to use Maggie more.

Not to mention how many times they retcon the eras Marge and Homer met/dated!  It went from the early 70s - to the 90s !!

For anyone who has ever had a "Hell no!" for bratty little DW on the PBS kid's show, Arthur, may I introduce you to this guy!

I know there is a trend now of artists re-recording and re-releasing their back catalogs, and in cases like Taylor Swift, who did not own her first iterations, I get why.

But to just re-record because - hey, why not?!, I really don't get the point.

Kind of reminds me of George Lucas who meddles with his original Star Wars film and adds stuff to it because he has the money and technology to do so.  Maybe some singers want to change things up because they always wanted to do something different with it they couldn't do when they originally recorded it.

I guess it is interesting to hear takes of songs from men now in their 60s versus how these songs were interpreted/created when in their 20s and 30s, but then I wonder why not move forward instead of going in reverse?

I agree with this.  They are in their 60s and grandparent age now.  Their perspective on the world is different than it was 30+ years ago.    You can't sing about youthful rebellion in leather pants forever.

If I recall late 90s Fox had a Family Channel that might have bought it?

There was a network on cable once owned by Pat Robertson (and the CBN company he headed)  who dubbed it The Family Channel and it was meant to be just that - family friendly shows.  Most of the shows were syndicated shows from the 50s and 60s (especially westerns).  When it was sold, it was stipulated the channel would remained titled "The Family Channel" to help discourage radical programming changes.

They did make some original programs later like Zorro (with Duncan Regher) and The Black Stallion (based on the books and movies) among other things.

  9. I was so mad this morning, I was almost beside myself!

A little background:  Last week there was a story a producer added to her hour of the show about road rage - specifically that Gen Z preferred to show their anger at a bad driver by thumbing them down.  She asked if I had file of people going thumbs down.  I told her no, but I did have road rage file from other reports (not local) we had done over the years.  She liked that idea so I cut it.  It would up getting bumped from the show several times until yesterday morning.

Fast forward to my shift.  I arrive and review my emails and found that Bitcheroo had clutched her pearls at seeing file of road rage incidents* claiming they were "graphic" (they weren't) and disturbing (not really).  She demanded not only my video be deleted from the system (and never to be used again), she demanded the source videos used to build it be deleted too!!  Mind you no one else above Bitcheroo had an issue with the video.

So I ask our executive producer to explain what the hell was going on?  He couldn't even look me in the eye (kept looking everywhere else though!).  He said Bitcheroo just thought it was disturbing and it shouldn't have been used.  I countered that the producer was informed of what the video was and she approved of it.  Since the video was in limbo for nearly a week, anyone could have seen it at any time or asked me specifics if they thought there could be an issue.  He admitted Bitcheroo is a nut and being unreasonable but there was no other choice than to follow her orders.  I informed him why delete the file videos I used to create the video?  After all, we aren't allowed to order video anymore (costs money!!) and all we have is what is in our archive unless we shoot it ourselves (I throw in that we could have spent the past several days shooting thumbs down video if there was a problem!). Sooner or later thee will be a need for that file video (it's cyclical, someone does a special report on road rage or a law related to it and that video is our buffer), and now Bitcheroo just made us lose something potentially useful because SHE alone didn't like it.

What annoys me most is that I was never consulted about this nor my opinion asked.  She probably smiled smugly the whole time knowing it was another dig at me.

    * The incidents showed a person throwing a rock at a windshield and a car hitting the back bumper of another car twice, and drivers yelling at each other in the street.

Reminds me of a non-work situation from my childhood when this girl in my 6th grade class stood up and said loudly, "MRS. SMITH!  MRS. SMITH! AMY IS EATING CANDY!!  Amy was not eating candy; she was taking medication because she had epilepsy.  The teacher shut that shit down immediately.

Trouble is there are so many resentful people out there who think everyone else is breaking the rules and they are obligated to spoil it for them, even when there is a good reason.

I'm very skeptical. Not that I've read it, or that I want to. But no one noticed until now? Or is this just a prank or even historical revision, claiming he wasn't a madman at all? There are some things I'm tempted to look up, but don't want in my search history. That book is one of them.

Nothing wrong with reading it - IMO it gives you insight into the man's thinking.  You don't need to agree with it or his methods.  Plenty of people had this on their bookshelves.   Madeline Albright had one.  It was sold online along with other books after her death.

  12. I'm starting to think Seth Macfarlane's version of the show should have gone forward after all.

Elizabeth Banks may have salvaged herself somewhat with Cocaine Bear, but I do not have high hopes for this.  Velma was enough of a travesty to an IP and I really don't want to see the Flintstones go down the same path.

No mention of Dino, how long do Brontosaurus live (a great joke would be that Dino was a little baby and is now over 80 feet long and 40 feet high)

Actually this is interesting.  Even in the 1970s Pebbles & Bamm Bamm show, Hoppy (the Rubble's pet Hopperoo) vanished with out explanation, but they had a replacement pet in the form of Gronk.  The Flintstones still had Dino but also added Wooly, a mini mammoth.  IIRC however, Dino was a "snorkasaurus" (and initially was a very Phil Silvers type of fellow!) not a brontosaurus.

civil trials can also be a method of obtaining some justice when the criminal justice system fails and is not just "sticking it" to someone.

Sometimes.  I've also seen far too many situations in which a person was found not guilty of something (and even having ample proof of such) at the state level only to be put through the legal wringer again at the federal level or in a civil hearing.

they were out of good ideas, so wrote an "it was all a dream" episode.

But that's just it.  Did it HAVE to be a dream episode?  The idea itself was solid enough (kid has divorced parents and needs to bond with Dad who needs to try harder).  Maybe the Jonathan as dog part was silly, but assuming the episode wasn't changed due to Victor French's health (be died before the episode even aired!), it could have been done differently.  Then again, the show was pretty sappy even then!

I'm not sure that the show's opening credits would still pass the muster.

It had her walk up in ritzy clothes in front of the revolving door in front of the hotel lobby with the announcer doing the usual deal of announcing the show's name and that it starred Ann Sothern but then it had a male chorus sing 'as KAAY-tee [abbreveviated wolf-whistle] Kay-Tee' (the theme song's only three words) before she entered the lobby and wordlessly invited the audience to follow her in via her gesturing index finger.

I went to look at the opening credits (there are a few from the show's run), and quite frankly, I don't have a problem with it.  Sure it was the era, but I don't think it offensive.  I did see a later credit opening in which there is no chorus just an instrumental and no wolf whistle.

On 3/8/2023 at 6:45 PM, Blergh said:

By this point, Miss Sothern was still facially  gorgeous but had had the misfortune of having caught a debilitating case of hepatitis a few years earlier which resulted in a permanent weight gain and she  would pass fifty by the show's close so I wonder how realistic it would have been for this chorus to have wolf-whistled at her.

I guess it depends.  Some women don't mind being whistled at and may be flattered.  Some will be happy for some attention than no attention.  I didn't know about Sothern's hepatitis so I'm sorry she suffered such a horrible disease!

Barbara Eden would reveal that Miss Sothern had asked if there was any way that the younger performer could be made less attractive during Miss Eden's one-shot performance.

Nothing new here.  Even now, I hear similar stories about "the star" wanting to be glammed up while everyone else is dressed down.  Sothern may have been guilty of insecurity, but considering Hollywood culture (heaven forbid one gains weight or ages past 40) I'm not surprised.

He was also found liable for it in a civil suit.

Different rules in a civil trial - the jury doesn't even have to be unanimous and burden of proof is different.  Sometimes even if a person is not guilty of a crime in in a criminal trial, sometimes they try to stick it to them in a civil trial.

I haven't read much on the trial or deduced if Blake was guilty.  All I know is his wife was a status seeker and a user and a con artist.  Do I think she deserved what happened to her?  No.

Whatever happened that fateful night, I can only believe that it will be sorted out by powers greater than that on Earth.

Aww!  I catch The Virginian periodically on INSP and it's a nice little show (and ran almost as long as Bonanza and also filmed in color from beginning to end).  Despite the periodic changing cast, Elizabeth was a sweet, spunky character.

    RIP Miss Lane.

My mother was quite fond is the term:  "Fuck-a-doo".  Gender neutral and could be used as a term of endearment with the right person.

My edit partner and I had a lengthy discussion with one of the EPs over some issues which keep cropping up and not being fully resolved.  Unfortunately I'm not sure if all of it made it to the producers' ears.  Some of this issues are still happening, although my partner and I have been handling it well when they improve other things.

Plumbing still working as well, so no issues there at the moment!

While my partner and I were discussing a work issue, he heard a cackle in the distance and asked me who was that.  I told him it was Bitcheroo.  He said he had heard it before but had no idea!  I explained it's typical of unpleasant unsympathetic, superior thinking all knowing management types who try to act as if they identify with human beings or have a sense of humor.  I've known a few of them over the years.

Seems crazy to take books written during a different time and try to excise parts to make them more "acceptable" to today's audiences.

Nothing new unfortunately.  They did this to the Nancy Drew books back in the 50s.  The original books were written in the 30s and they were "updated" in the 1959 editions.  The older editions can be found including a republished set I found online.
