I agree on the Steve-thing. As several other people said, I didn't like him much when the show aired, but now I find him to be quite realistic and likeable underneath it all. Ziering does play the part with considerable charm. In other news, Luke Perry turns 50 today. I'm sure he doesn't look any older now than he does in this season where he and wardrobe really commit to the downward spirale look. Good job I guess - but that would be the only good job in this episode, so...

Before I listen to the podcast, I have one important question: Why is Claire in that dream? Did Dylan ever really meet her? (I guess at the PAD, but did they ever have a conversation.) But I guess since she's now in the main cast, they gotta give her something to do *eyeroll*

I just want to take a moment to appreciate how this show (meaning BH 90210, not the podcast) expanded my English vocabulary. I learned the words "date rape" and "intervention" and "squash it" by watching. I should have watched and listened more carefully and learned "squeef" as well, but well, better late than never, right?!

S05.E08: Things That Go Bang In The Night
Nanna replied to Primetimer's topic in Beverly Hills, 90210
12 points goes to Ray who clearly doesn't give a shit about the reputation of KEG house - does Griffin really think that Ray and his buddies discuss KEG over a beer on Friday afternoon or whatever? In spite of all the reds flags raised by Ray's behaviour, I'd take him anyday if it meant that I wouldn't have to put up with the other snobs on this show. God. -

I'm with Sarah on milk is gross, but I don't mind it in coffee or on serial. I do howevee feel deeply suspiscious of any grown up who drinks milk. And the most disgusting commercial of all times is oreos being dipped in milk. Yuck. Almost as disgusting as Brandon. -
My friend had a haircut like Kelly's. It was sort of a "hair model" sort of thing (the hairdresser needs to rehearse new styles so she'll cut your hair for free as long as she gets to decide the style). It must hve been about the same time, so clearly, someone in the hairbusiness was trying to make this fashionable. It wasn't. Which was obvious even then.

So... Were we supposed to learn a lesson about how a little torture is just the price of democracy? Oh, that's right, we weren't supposed to care about that, but we were supposed to conclude that Brandon was a hero. Again. I didn't remember any of that plotline, but I did remember both the mascot stealing and the pumpkins, so clearly my teenage self wasn't too invested in Brandon's pondering over democracy in the third world.

Really, Kelly - you're at your boyfriend's house, not at your own place. It's really none of your business what goes on. She's soooo boring and judgemental and to make matters worse, this is the start of frumpy Kelly who looks boring all the time. I love that Ray has shown up already, I thought it was much later. He's so delightfully awful. I totally buy that this role ruined his career, but he gave us so much before he became a doctor instead!

Holy shit I can't wait until the hostage situation. Oh yes. Except that is in connection with weather girl STUFF which was the worst, but hilariously so.

Didn't Brandon have that "man upstairs" conversation with Dylan once? Or someone else did, perhaps when Dead Scott deadscotted himself?
-
I'm starting to really like Steve. Mostly because everybody else is so horrible.

YEAH! I hate Jesse so much that I almost shouted "fuck you, Jesse" out loud on the bus. Thank you, Sarah, for expressing everybody's hatred and disgust for that waste of space and screentime.

S05.E01: What I Did On My Summer Vacation And Other Stories

Can't help it, still loving Val's 90s-bob, it is so perfect! I just love Val, she's a brearh of fresh air and she brings some sexiness to the show (I think it's in the next episode that she shows up in Brandon's room in her underwear and she is SO hot. Yes, I have a girlcrush on her.) I seem to recall that it was a bit of a surprise that she wasn't as sweet as she seemed at first, for once it was well played and directed. In direct opposition to Kelly-Donna fight, Andrea's boring husband etc. Kelly-Brandon makes sense, they seem to be in love and as smug as only people who are newly in love and fucking all the time can be. For most couples, the smugness wears off, but those two keep be annoying for many reasons. -
Another Kelly hater here. I had forgotten that she was actually kind of cool in the first seasons. I mostly remembered saint Kelly, dressed in boring, dowdy, unflattering outfits. She's not great in this episode either, but I actually likeher when she starts dating Brandon - they are actually written as if they're in love, not like her relationship (tempted to put that in quotationmarks) with Dylan.

Kelly is such a bitch in this episode. She seems as if she's actually happy that Brenda didn't get the part (although she claimed in the previous episode that she wanted Brenda to get the part) and is really quick to confirm Steve's suspicion of foul play - so yeah, she's totally the one starting the rumour. The worst part is that the show keeps reminding us how Kelly was a victim of rumours because John Sears, No Blanket Man and blahblah - and yet she's the first one to believe the worst of her friend. Nice. Move to London, Brenda, and get new friends. BTW it is funny to think about how the rumour reached Randall, seeing as no one from the gang seems to ever speak to anyone else. Laura must have been really busy spreading the word of Brenda's alleged sluttiness!
-
And a little of topic: It is so perfect that you upload the podcasts just in time for me to listen to them on my way home from work. I'm sure you have taken Danish work hours into consideration. You make me walk home so I can listen to an entire podcast, so thank you for the exercise!
-
I'm kind of also Team Brenda here. Kelly doesn't give a shit about the part, but she knows that Brenda does - so as a minimum she should have told her about it. Not that it would have changed anything, Brenda would still have been a total bitch about it. For once I don't totally hate Brandon all the time, his "get the fuck away from me"-speech (which btw is almost the same as he gave Emily, he's really unlucky with the stalkers this guy) is really justified. She is creepy. And for once he stands up for his sister, even though it is in a little misguided way.
-
Yeah, when I watched the reboot I wondered why the had cast so many girls with extremely big heads. And then I realized that they were just so skinny that their hesds no longer seemed to match their bodies. In comparison the original cast looked like ordinary teenagers (except those who looked like the parents of said teenagers.)
-
I'm sorry, but I kind of love this episode in a very cheesy way. I like that in Brenda's subconscious, Brandon is just as big a brayfest as we all seem to think. And that Dylan - sorry, "Peter" - is soooo terrible. And that Brenda really deep down hopes that Kelly will go down in flames. Or in drugs. Michelle's diary is just an excuse for Brenda to live her fantasies out, and I just can't help loving it, although it is the worst sixties portrait in the history og television.

My thoughts exactly!

I have to pause the podcast after the B-plot to say this: When Kelly says "I guess under the right circumstances we're all capable of betrayal" I lmost shouted out loud. Does she not remember frenching her best friend's boyfriend while she was away in Paris? Yes, Kelly, you certainly are capable of betrayal. And Brandon: stop talking to your sister like that. She may be tiresome, but she actually is entitled to feel a little schadenfreude if things are going bad between Kelly and Dylwig, she's only human. And now, back to the rest of the podcast.

Loved Adam's "the universe can't be one of the things"-rant. And I really cannot fault Dylan for being rude in that particular situation. Perhaps Kelly was a sexy witch for Halloween, but Lucinda is trying to be one all everytime she tries to seduce a nineteen year old douchebag. On the upside, both Donna, Kelly and Brenda are looking really good in this episode. Which is good for Donna, cause that is all she hs going for her right now. (Going back to David, really? That drawing, REALLY?)
-
Also weird that Lucinda was all about getting into Brandon's pants when she was married - didn't she also teach back then? - and in no way afraid of a scandal, and now, all of a sudden, she doesn't want scandal because of her teaching and the stupid task force?! She didn't give a shit about Brandon's grades and future before, why start now?
