Does every single Hallmark movie have one of the leads lose a parent? I'm trying to think which movie had both leads who had living parents but I can't remember any.

In Falling in Love with the Girl Next Door and Pumpkin Pie Wars, the mothers are feuding but the fathers are secretly still friends.

I see a lot of people in this thread not seeming to know whether they were unsatisfied with FOX's version because it genuinely missed the mark, or because they just have too much love and nostalgia for the original to really get on board with any other interpretation. Believe me, when it's good, when it's made by people who love the original for the right reasons and genuinely want to join the fun, you will love it. And if you didn't love this version, you have no one to blame but FOX.

The New York Times said this version is "soul-killing in the same way that hearing a cherished rock anthem used in a television commercial is."

One minute, he’s in college, and in the next, rioters are roaming the highway around him, breaking into cars, and literally tearing people apart. This is the day the dead walk. This is the world of We’re Alive.

Does anyone have ratings on how this network is doing?  Just curious on how it's faring compared to H2, which it replaced.

    http://www.adweek.com/news/television/viceland-suffers-low-ratings-despite-its-young-audience-173107

    Quote

Viceland's average 18–49 prime-time audience in July was just 45,000, less than half of the 92,000 that H2 averaged in the demo last July.

While Viceland's audience is much smaller than H2's, it's also younger. The median viewer age dropped 17 years between July 2015 and July 2016, from 57 to 40.

Even with those soft Nielsen numbers, the network—and the company behind it—remains an attractive proposition for Disney, which is Vice's largest outside investor, with $400 million invested in the company. (A+E Networks is a joint venture between Disney and Hearst.)

  5. 400-Pound Hacker? Trump Comments Fuel Dialogue on Fat-Shaming

    http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/09/29/well/live/a-400-pound-hacker-trump-comment-ignites-fat-shaming-debate.html

    Quote

It was a casual remark tossed off by Donald J. Trump that jolted Johanna Kandel from her seat during the recent presidential debate.

An anonymous computer hacker, Mr. Trump said, “could be somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds.”

“The hair on the back of my neck definitely stood up,” said Ms. Kandel, 37, of West Palm Beach, Fla., who has struggled with eating disorders and now works to raise awareness about the issue. Ms. Kandel recalled how vicious comments about size and appearance contributed to her own struggle.

“How many of our youth were sitting there and watching these debates, and thinking that this is O.K. to talk about and shame people based on their appearance?”

Last year when I went in for my physical I was 20 pounds away from my goal, my primary physician went on and on about how much better I will feel once the last 20 are gone, but I was like what is another 20 going to do that the first 130 didn't do?

Congratulations on losing more than 130 lbs.!

Why Do Obese Patients Get Worse Care? Many Doctors Don’t See Past the Fat

    Quote

A committee reviewed the risks and benefits of joint replacement in obese patients for the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. The group concluded that heavy patients should first be counseled to lose weight because a lower weight reduces stress on the joints and can alleviate pain without surgery.

But there should not be blanket refusals to operate on fat people, the committee wrote. Those with a body mass index over 40—like a 5-foot-5-inch woman weighing 250 pounds or a 6-foot man weighing 300—and who cannot lose weight should be informed that their risks are greater, but they should not be categorically dismissed, the group concluded.

I like the quirk that the people in the talking heads are played by diff/less attractive actors than in the 'tv dramatization'.

I watch way too much Investigation Discovery, so I understood the format right away. But André Holland is more attractive (and younger) than Cuba Gooding Jr.—the opposite of what usually happens on true crime TV reenactments.

In the first hillbilly scene, did anyone say, Holy shit is that Chaz Bono?! Was he in the end credits? I wasn't looking.

    Yes, he plays Lot Polk.

I thought Lady GaGa was suppose to be on this one? I didn't see her name in the credits.

The credits included Kathy Bates, Wes Bentley, Cheyenne Jackson, Denis O'Hare, and Evan Peters. No Gaga.

I am not looking forward to this forum becoming JonBenet Central.… Actually now that I think about it, it might be nice to discuss it with my veteran true crime lovers. These newbies to true crime make me crazy!

Each of the three episodes has its own thread in the Specials forum: http://forums.previously.tv/forum/937-specials-tv-movies-other-one-offs/

I'm glad JonBenet: An American Murder is bringing viewers and media attention to ID. They need it!

I'm not sure what season is currently on PBS.  I watched last night and enjoyed it (especially the scenery!).  I think it would be a pretty raw place to live, though.

Shetland's not part of Masterpiece! (or even PBS), just a show which some stations purchase independently. (Like Vera or Midsomer Murders.) So you have to check your local listings to see which (if any) seasons are available.

According to Wikipedia, Shetland has "average peak temperatures of 7°C (45°F) in March and 18°C (64°F) in July and August. Temperatures over 25°C (77°F) are very rare." Sounds heavenly to me, here in New England!

I tripped over another series on YT called Fake or Fortune that features art experts evaluating a piece and deciding whether it's genuine and by a specific artist. It's a very gentle and PBS-like show but interesting to learn about various artists and how trails are followed to uncover provenance and other clues to authenticate.

Shows like that often air in the US on Ovationtv.com. That's also where I saw Bertie and Elizabeth (starring James Wilby and Juliet Aubrey) and The Lost Prince (about Prince John, son of George V).

I can't believe this!  QVC is now selling "Erase," described as a "hair and scalp exfoliator."  It is supposed to remove "product build-up."

The only non-profane word I can think of to describe a company that sells a product that can build up to unhealthy levels on your scalp and another product to remove it is chutzpah.

I've used Wen for several years with no problem—purchased from QVC, Guthy-Renker, and Amazon. In a pinch, I just bought a brick & mortar cleansing conditioner, Renpure Solutions: https://www.renpure.com/product-category/solutions/

The label says, "Depending on your hair type and fixative use: [do they mean styling products?] we recommend using a Renpure shampoo which contains gentle coconut cleansers, for a deeper cleaning when needed. Average use is six cleansing conditioners to every one shampoo use." Many (most?) hair products build up, not just Wen.

Out of curiosity, I compared the ingredients. Renpure's first five are water, cocamidopropyl betaine, cetyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate, and behentrimonium chloride. Wen: water, glycerin, cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, and stearamidopropyl dimethylamine.

The junkyard gumshoe sure did think he solved the mystery though. Who was he?

Michael Helgoth, 26, worked at his parents' auto salvage yard on the outskirts of town and died of a gunshot wound to the head in January 1997—two days after the DA announced that the list of suspects had narrowed. His former employee, John Kenady, says Helgoth and an accomplice killed JonBenet Ramsey.

Yes, [iced buns are] an enriched dough which does have eggs and sugar, but it's not overtly sweet. The icing does make it sweet. It's not really a sandwich or I don't think of it as such. The dough is similar to brioche.

A year or two ago, savory sandwiches on brioche were popular here in northeast US. (For example sliders, which are tiny ground meat sandwiches, or lobster salad.)

    Yuck.
