I have no idea what is majority or minority, but there’s seems to be more conversation around race and the Cookout than I remember in past seasons about the alliances that were all white (not counting the seasons that had unquestionably racist comments). But to go back to my previous post, this is not happening in a vacuum, but in the context of 20 years of the show. If almost all BB casts had been predominantly black and almost all winners had been black, then I think you would see different opinions about the Cookout (the alliance probably would not even be a thing, at least not explicitly so). I know I would view the situation differently, but that world does not exist. Certainly, that doesn’t mean other people can’t look at it differently, hate the alliance, and root against them.

When an alliance states out loud that they are targeting people based on race, that will probably generate a lot of discussion about race.

With that said, I’m personally not bothered by the Cookout, but I want them to face some real adversity ASAP because I don’t like seeing one big alliance control the game, no matter who it is. It’s boring, and I like chaos on BB. I would be perfectly happy with Derek F going next.

    Definitely.

Glad to see Britini go! I don’t think she was cut out for the game.

She didn't seem to be able to cope very well, and she was really just way over the top. Hope the next juror brings Kleenex. And earplugs.

Who said they’re getting a pass? I see multiple people on this thread alone, people on Reddit, and people on Twitter complaining about the Cookout…

I think it’s fine for people to dislike the Cookout as much as any other alliance, but everyone isn’t going to look at in a vacuum and pretend like there is no reason why they would form an alliance. We have tons of seasons, where there are a one or two black people, who usually get excluded from the big, main alliance and then get picked off. Whether one thinks this was due to racism, unconscious bias, or somehow a complete coincidence, that’s been a typical pattern. This is the first season where there have been enough black players to form a powerful alliance and protect each other, and they did it. Just like you see women stick together in a lot of fields that are male dominated - no one has to like it, but everyone isn’t going to be up in arms about it either.

I didn't say they were getting a pass from everyone, I said "from most people". I think the majority of people seem to be fine with what the cookout is doing. I don't read Reddit or Twitter. On those, are the people complaining about the cookout the majority, or the minority? I have seen others on here who aren't thrilled with the mindset of the cookout, but it seems to be the minority. Have I missed a bunch of posts that would make that view the majority? If so, I will correct my post with my apologies for not paying enough attention. Also, as for everyone being up in arms, I don't think anyone should be  bothered about the cookout alliance any more, or any less, than they have been in the past about other alliances who were only assumed to be targeting based on color.

As for this episode, I'm glad not to have to ff through Britini anymore. Girl drove me nuts.

I've never been a fan of a majority alliance pagonging non-alliance members out of the game.  But that's mainly because it is boring, and predictable, and usually mean.  Those past alliances I've hated have been complacent and lazy and reduced non-members to "other" status which was just ugly to watch.  Remember Paul's friendship alliance ostracizing the nominated hamsters, and punishing those who were nice to them?  That was just plain nasty and very ugly.

I agree. The horrible treatment of fellow humans is despicable.

The Cookout, however, has never been complacent and they have never been mean.  In the beginning, they weren't even in the majority, so they really had to hustle and work it to move the game in their direction.  That was fun to watch.  Tiffany may have a big pair of bossy pants, but her calculated strategy of every Cookout member having an outside alliance pairing is genius.  They don't look like an alliance that way, and they get intel.  The Cookout has also been very clever.  You never see them exclusively hanging out together.  They haven't formed a clubhouse in the HOH bedroom.  Because of the shield pairs, there's always a mix of hamsters hanging together.  This is also genius.

Yes, but hasn't it been done before?

As with most big alliances, it will get interesting once they're forced to turn on each other.  For this alliance, it will be even more interesting, because that's going to pit Xavier against Tiffany, and that's gonna be a clash of the titans.  There is no way either one will want to go into a final two with the other.  That pairing is too evenly matched to risk it.

So that's why I'm OK with this alliance, this time.  Are they all black?  Yes.  This is also the first time in BB history that there's been enough minorities in the house to even form such an alliance.  I think this is a one time thing, this won't work next time.  If BB keeps casting a diverse group of hamsters like this, it might even be the shakeup in the game a lot of us have been looking to see for years.

And an alliance of white people is usually accused of being racist, and receives major sm backlash, if any of its targets have a different skin color, regardless of their actual targeting reason. This alliance is very clear that they are targeting everyone with a different skin color, solely because of their color, and most people are ok with it. Hypocrisy is always bothersome to me.

  4. I don't get why this season's majority alliance gets a pass (from most people) on this behavior. In the past, when there's an alliance of people who are white, anytime a person of color is evicted, there are generally very ugly labels thrown on the alliance. These labels are applied whether or not any race specific bigotry has reared its ugly head. It seems that the bigotry is assumed. However, this season, when the majority alliance specifically states they are targeting all people who don't share the same skin color, not so much on the recriminations. I guess if you have a "good reason" this kind of behavior is acceptable to a lot of people.

  5. It seemed from the show that DerekX and Claire are starting to put things together. Maybe they'll clue SB in to the fact that the three of them plus Alyssa are going to be picked off because they're not the right color. If so, she might hear Kyland's (assumed) nominee manipulation in a different way. It's about time for somebody to wake up to what's going on and make the game at least somewhat more interesting than the uninterrupted roll it's on now. Come on SB, shake this snooze fest up!

Loved this show. Then, towards the end of season 3, they brought in the Samaritan plot which took up all of the oxygen and killed the show. It was a slow, painful death.

I had been looking for the show on various channels to re-watch the first couple of seasons but, after learning the beliefs of Jim Caviezel, I don't think I would enjoy the show in quite the same way. Pity.

Man, their conversation was painful to sit through. Cut to Kyland in the DR: "Azah is not good a communicating." True, but - neither are you! Then Azah in the DR: "I'm not being heard." He heard you, you just weren't making any sense. I'm not sure what she wanted from him - an apology I guess?

I always wonder when they do these "America Votes" things how the HGs feel when they realize "America" doesn't like them. I kind of relish the thought of their deflated egos.

No it's not, and it's also stupid. Assuming you correctly bet on the Veto winner, you win a second Veto, but the nominations are pretty much a lock anyway this week and the second Veto has to be used this week, so who do you use it on? Claire is the obvious target and if she wins Veto what's the point of Vetoing Derek F? I guess it guarantees your own safety but why the heck is Kyland wasting his time/money with it?

Also, what is with Tiffany's obsession over Sarah Beth?

I wonder if the second veto could be used on the replacement nominee.

  8. A surgeon wouldn't operate on a family member, a judge wouldn't preside over a case involving someone they had a relationship with, etc. Nobody thinks they should lose their jobs because they can't cover those particular cases. As soon as AC became a scandalous news story, he shouldn't have been covered by CC, and he wasn't. For one hour a day. One. There is plenty of coverage on that story on all the other CNN programs, and plenty of other news for CC to cover on his show. Calls for CC to lose his job seem more than a bit ridiculous to me.

He did, at first.  Then Peachy reminded him of the rules.

Which is why Wendell was sure to call out every time he finished a puzzle in WaW.  He didn't want to get caught by the same rule again.

He was definitely very vocal about being finished in subsequent challenges. It was funny. I had forgotten about him objecting to his loss.

I love Wendell.  Hot Mess House shows that he is extremely talented at home building and renovation.  Because I liked the show so much, I re-watched Season 36 that Wendell won.  He was great.

The theme of the season was Reverse The Curse, reversing mistakes from previous survivors.  The survisors were told to make good, not bad decisions.

Wendell made 2 excellent decisons that won him the game.  In ep. 1 he rejected Chris's proposal to get rid of Domenick.  He told Chris he liked Dom.  They stuck together and dominated the game from then on.  In Ep. 12 Wendell really won the puzzle challenee but he let Laurel win because she put her arms up first.  Laurel reversed her decision to vote out Wendell  that night.  We all know what happened next.

He had a mental lapse and didn't call out to Jeff that he was finished. She did. He didn't put up a fuss, probably because he recognized he messed up, but I wouldn't consider that letting her win.

I liked the old Leverage, but wasn't an uber-fan.  I just thought it was a fun show.  I will admit Nate was always my least favorite character.  Actually, I've never been crazy about Timothy Hutton in any role.  But Nate just bugged me for some reason.  So I'm glad the show is back without him.  No one looks like they've aged 8 years.  2-3, maybe.  I sort of wish they cleaned Eliot up a bit.  Christian Kane looks so much better clean cut.  But damn!  Aldis Hodge looks fantastic!  (He was great in One Night in Miami, also on Prime.)

I like "the new guy", but what was with Noah's complete and utter failure to keep his accent?  And it wasn't just an accent, it was his entire style of speech.  Early on he had a low gravely voice, plus the accent, which was a bit over the top NOLA for me and made him sound like an 80 year old man.  And then the gravel went away, and then the accent came and went throughout the episode.  Wylie is a better actor than that, and also good enough to know if he can't keep an accent to just not bother with it.

I think my favorite part was Parker's bit about the air vents.  I loved the absolute glee she expressed.

This will be a fun summer watch.

For me, it just wasn't fun watching an alcoholic be an alcoholic.

I try to give people some lenience on things they genuinely can't control, so annoying voices are annoying, but minimal for me. I'm not gonna judge someone that harshly based on things they can't control. Then again, I am quite aware that my voice could be deemed annoying because of some medical issues from birth, so I talk weird (listening to myself through a recording is almost torturous for me).

The naturally annoying voices mostly get a pass from me (yes, even Nicole F.) It's the affected upspeaking, vocal frying, exaggerated glottal stopping annoying voices that I judge quickly and harshly. Just stop it!!

Last week, AV Club ran a series about “Reality Game Changers”; cast members who would come to define their respective franchises. The representative for Survivor?

    Rob Mariano

Even more messed up: his performance on Redemption Island was cited. I’m getting ready for work, so I’m not going to rant hard about this. I’ll just say that I can’t co-sign that at all.

    That's a heck of a lot better than Rupert😅

  14. I think scheduling may have played a part too. In this calendar year (starting with episode 6 on 1/4) the show did not air weekly until episode 11 (4/12) forward. Three months of the show not being on more often than it being on. A lot of shows seem to be doing this lately and it's not doing the shows any favors.

Good point! We don't hear much about Kelvin and Sharina. I guess you're right..if K & S aren't married then Sharina could never technically be Lil Kev's anything. Even if he likes her. It's all about "the title."

I thought maybe I had missed hearing about it. Still, girlfriend is a step up from side piece, I guess.

The narration is intrusive and annoying, trying to ramp up the drama. Agree on the choppy directing, also. The talking heads drone on and on about the same points over and over. The idea? Great! The scenery? Awesome! The teams? Boring. I'm not getting any sense of what anyone's all about. The only ones I like are North America, just because they are awe inspiring in their indefatigable confidence and sheer will. Boss man's a bit of an annoyance but, shrug, he's used to being in charge. The rest of the teams are dullsville. The only thing I have learned about them is that Autumn is a whiny, spoiled princess.

He seems like the type that believes he's the best, most generous, most awesome boss ever, and would be shocked if his employees didn't feel the same way. Unfortunately, like a lot of people like this, he seems to spend so much time trying to convince people he's that guy, he fails to actually be that guy. At least that's how he comes across to me. Autumn is exhausting.

  17. Somebody That I Used to Know was the most excruciating performance I think we have been subjected to. It was so incredibly comically horrible we could not look away or hit the mute. I think we were in shock for a good few minutes afterward.

  18. The new DA came into the office with a personal grudge, for whatever reason, against Erin. She chose to repeatedly demean Erin and made it clear that that was the way it was going to be. Period. Erin let her know that she wasn't going to work in that environment and would move on if that's how the DA was set on behaving. The DA had a choice- lose a valuable member of the team, and do harm to the DA's office, because she has a personal bias, or treat Erin with the respect she would give any other experienced, effective member of the team.
