I want to add speculation. Ben suddenly running a lot? We’re being set up for something - exercise addiction or eating disorder possibly?

He's almost certainly training to become a firefighter... he's joining the firefighter spin-off.

I agree with this.  Specifically with April and Arizona, they don't behave any differently than Meredith and Cristina did, and I don't recall there ever being the thought that those two should pair up.  Women can be friends with other women (and men with other men, and women with men), without it being sexual.

Yea, I really don't know why people are acting like it's even a possibility based on nothing more than some very typical Grey's friendship scenes. Arizona and April have been close like this for a long time. They also literally just brought in a new love interest for Arizona 2 weeks ago. People tend to assume couples are forming on this show whenever characters interact (Alex / Maggie, Alex / Meredith, DeLuca and Amelia last night, etc.)

The epitome of steady. 2.0 and 7.9 million in overnights.

If it adjusts up to a 2.1 it will be tried with episode 4 last year, which is insane. Even as it stands at a 2.0, it's tied as ABC's #1 show of the week with The Good Doctor. It's ahead of Modern Family (1.8), tied with Empire (2.0), and behind only This Is Us (2.8) as the highest-rated drama on all of broadcast in the demo.

  5. I don't think there's anything between April and Arizona or DeLuca and Amelia... just like there was nothing to Alex / Mer. I think the writers are just making a better effort to explore friendships again, which Vernoff said she wanted to do. It's nice to see characters actually talk to eachother again.

  6. I'm so loving the more mature, fast-paced fun of this season versus the slow, dark, broody series that Grey's turned into last year. The writing is really great, managing to organically give good moments to nearly every character each episode. They're slowly building lots of side plots (Ben the firefighter, Jo and her husband, new interns, Jackson and the foundation, Arizona / DeLuca's sister, etc.) while the main plot gets focus, rather than just abandoning characters for several episodes at a time. AND we're getting unique character combos, which is great - like the small moment of comedy between Alex and Jackson, or the nice new mentor / student bond with Amelia and DeLuca.

Meredith is a total badass. I'm so glad to see her written as a mature, competent, complex woman and surgeon. I also love how much history they're referencing this year, which is perhaps the shows biggest strength. I'm so glad they're utilizing the rich history of all the characters.

I can't keep straight if they were interns or residents, but I can think of 4 off the top of my head that they've killed off (George, April and Jackson's two co-horts, and the one who got electrocuted...).  But, yes, they do also fade away.

ETA: and Lexi!  Make that 5!

They were all residents, aside from the one who was electrocuted. Lexi came in with a huge intern class all of whom faded into the background, so did DeLuca's class (Cross last appeared in one scene of the season finale). I wouldn't really put George on that list even if he had been an intern, as he was an original character.

  8. Grey's did a 2.0 last night, making it the top-rated scripted show of the night (tied with Will & Grace). It's ABC's 2nd highest-rated series this week, after The Good Doctor (2.2) and with Modern Family down to a 1.9. Last night, Scandal did a 1.4 and HTGAWM did an 0.9. Grey's is the 3rd highest rated drama on all of network in the demo this week behind This Is Us and The Good Doctor.  Even Empire is down to a 1.9; this is the first time since Empire premiered that Grey's beat it in the demo.

Im not sure about Scorscones contract status but I reckon the tumour could be something that was given to get to a) give her something to do until Owen/Teddy is done and b) make Amelia more sympathetic as she's one of Greys more polarising characters.

Krista literally said that she gave Amelia the tumor because when she caught up on the series, she didn't recognize the person that Amelia had become in the last few seasons. Also, I don't think Teddy will be around that long. It seems like she isn't in 14x03 or 14x04 but returns for the flashbacks in 14x05. I'm not sure what her part will be beyond that, but it doesn't seem like she was on set for the 300th episode.

  10. Episode 5, 'Danger Zone', will be the Iraq flashback episode.

TVLine has learned exclusively that the ABC drama’s Oct. 26 episode, titled “Danger Zone,” will be told almost entirely in flashback and chronicle the events leading up to Megan’s (Abigail Spencer) kidnapping in Iraq. In addition to Spencer, the standalone hour will also feature Kevin McKidd’s Owen, Martin Henderson’s Nathan and Kim Raver’s Teddy. (Check out an exclusive first look above.) I’m told the episode — penned by staff writer Jalysa Conway and directed by Cecilie Mosli — will be partially set in the present day, with Owen and Megan unpacking old baggage.

  11. I really don't think that Jackson / Maggie is going to be a thing. I think April was hurt, thought she saw something (because Jackson and Maggie were indeed growing closer), and when she said it, it sent this weird spark through Jackson and Maggie that has them both questioning if there was something here (there isn't). I think they're playing it more for laughs than anything.

  12. Those are huge numbers; they once again make Grey's ABC's highest-rated show in the demo this week, besting Modern Family. It's also the 3rd highest-rated drama on broadcast all week, behind only This Is Us and Empire. Numbers will definitely dip in the coming weeks, but they're up from the finale and ABC has to be very, very happy right now.

  13. I thought the premiere was a fantastic reaction to what the show turned into last year (dark, boring). Vernoff hit the nail on the head in a post-show interview, where she mentioned that most fans probably assumed that Alex and Jo would just keep fighting because that's what we've become used to seeing. Instead, Alex sat down and said what he needed to say. I really found myself rooting for them again, and it was nice to see Jo on her own dealing with Steph leaving and getting to rock a surgery. She's been used as a prop for too long, and I want to continue to see her as a badass surgeon and a complicated character in her own right. Sleeping with the sub-intern makes total sense to me; like Meredith said, it was more about Alex than anything. Jo hasn't slept with Alex since season 12, which was months ago in the show's timeline, so it wasn't a matter of her being drunk, but a matter of her being lonely and frustrated and seeing a decent-looking guy who was being nice and was attracted to her. If you haven't been there before, well then... lucky you, I guess?

I also liked them turning most expectations about Megan on their head, in that she came back relatively OK. I also loved how they handled the 'love triangle', with Megan and Meredith both being total adults about it. I thought Meredith was fantastic the entire episode; Vernoff seems to really get her character, and I believe she's determined to showcase a more mature, strong (but still light) Meredith. The woman has been through hell, and she handles any crisis like a pro at this point. I loved Richard constantly referring to how much she's like Ellis.

I loved Bailey tonight, too! Another character that I think Vernoff knows how to handle much better than anyone who was writing for her last year. Bailey is tough, but she always used to be likable. I really liked what she said to Ben about not understanding how scary it could be for Jo to see men utilizing violence in front of her... and then, even more, I loved what she said about Karev.

Overall, it feels like the comedy is much more organic under Vernoff - rather than wacky, it's actually sexy and fun and it grows from the characters interactions rather than just absurd, forced situations. Like, sure Arizona hooking up with DeLuca's sister is ridiculous and soapy, but it was pulled off really fun and funny and sexy. And the way it tied back to the greater arc (having Amelia get in the MRI) was smart.

It was also great to have April vocalize what she felt about Montana, after the showrunners last year had it literally ignored for several episodes. It feels like Vernoff binged the show and basically said, 'here's what needs to be fixed, here's what needs to be addressed.' Every character had something to do in the episode, and it never felt rushed or forced. The pace and tone were both very similar to the earlier seasons in the best way possible.

  14. From Variety:

Since the tradition of “Grey’s” is to mix business with pleasure, of course there will be a couple of hook-ups in the premiere, including one for Arizona (Jessica Capshaw). While these characters never seem to learn that it would help to keep their personal and professional lives separate, or at least outside of the hospital’s walls, they provide some fodder for lighter moments that could keep the comedy infused all season.

So I'm guessing she definitely hooks up with DeLuca's sister.

  15. 14x04 - On the episode “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” – Amelia confronts a difficult situation, while Meredith deals with the fallout from her conversation with Nathan. Maggie finds herself at an awkward family dinner, Jackson receives big news, and Richard and Bailey search for the stars of tomorrow, on “Grey’s Anatomy,” THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network.

Guest starring is Debbie Allen as Catherine Avery, Abigail Spencer as Megan Hunt, Stefania Spampinato as Carina DeLuca and Greg Germann as Tom Koracick.

  16. Ben will leave Grey's mid-season to join the fire fighter spin-off

Details about George's transition to the spinoff are being kept under wraps. Just how George will move to the spinoff will be a key part of his storyline on the upcoming 14th season of Grey's Anatomy. George will continue to be a series regular on Grey's Anatomy season 14 until production of the spinoff begins, at which point he will focus his attention there. (The casting does not mean he will not continue to pop in and out of the flagship series.)
