  1. Maybe it's because I don't get invested in 'ships' but I'm loving this season. There has been an episode or two that I wasn't thrilled with, but overall the writing is so much better than it has been the past few years and I love that they're actually continuing stories week-to-week, giving every character something to do, and finding a nice balance between funny / sexy / dark / sad, etc.

It began at the very end of last year and I'm not convinced that there wasn't a "transition time" where Vernoff started to have some say so that she could lay the groundwork for the story lines that she wanted in seasons 14+.  Ergo, I'm still holding to the theory that Jaggie is a Vernoff creation (especially since it seemed to come out of nowhere...)

She was hired over the summer, long after season 13 had wrapped and literally months after the writing would have been done. I mean clearly she's a Jaggie fan as it was her choice to continue the storyline this year, but she wasn't there at the end of last year so its inception had nothing to do with her.

Regarding April / Jackson last season, I always found it odd that that episode was ever billed as a 'Japril' episode when there was nothing romantic about it other than them having sex at the end (which the writers then literally ignored for the rest of the season until Vernoff had April address it in early S14). "Japril The Sequel" was much more a Jackson-centric episode where April happened to be the supporting player who was present.

I have a feeling that, if April isn't killed off, she'll take Harriet with her wherever she goes.  No, it doesn't make ANY sense that Jackson would let that happen, but doing things that don't make sense is sort of Jackson's MO at the moment and, let's face it, Harriet is an obstacle to the whole "Jaggie" situation that Vernoff so, so, so desperately wants to be a thing.

To be fair, Vernoff didn't start the Jaggie thing. It was introduced at the end of last year when she had nothing to do with the show. She just continued down the path. Japril have been over as a couple for a long, long time.

  4. I really enjoyed this episode. I'm so glad that this season has finally shown movement for Alex and Jo, and despite not necessarily learning anything new about them from their flashbacks, I did think it added layers to the story. We always knew Alex's mom was mentally ill and that he struggled with it for years, but seeing the context of how it always affected his relationships really stung. It made the final scene with Jo so much sweeter. I'm currently rewatching the early seasons (on season 3 now), so seeing his growth is just so awesome.

I loved the April / Koracick stuff, too. I'm glad that they didn't sweep her crisis of faith under the rug after an episode or two. It's an interesting plot, and having been raised Catholic myself I've seen a ton of people deal with it (to varying degrees... sometimes it lasts for years). April has had such a trying few years, from Reed's death to her son's death, to her marriage falling apart, etc. Sarah Drew is killing it and Greg Germann was great too.

Maggie flashbacks... so, so unnecessary. I mean what did they add at all? It should have been just Alex / Jo flashbacks.

I'm enjoying Meredith's story, too. It's refreshing to see a female lead not caught up in romantic storylines. I hate to see Meredith paying for Ellis' deeds and I'm excited to see how it will play out.

I would have been completely fine with Jo and Alex going off into a happy ending rather than April and Arizona, but I think that you're right and they will stay together, relatively happy and backburnered until the end of the series.  My guess is that in the next episode, Jo is going to research fellowships across the country, Alex will feel suprised/sad/abandoned but not say anything, and in the end, Jo's project with Meredith will be the reason she stays.  So a couple of seasons ago, Alex wouldn't leave to travel with Jo because of Meredith and now Jo will stay because of Meredith.  Full circle.  How long until Alex feels like the third wheel?

I imagine the goal is to keep the remaining originals around until the end at this point. I'm glad that if Jo and Alex are endgame, they're at least finally developing Jo more. Hopefully there's a storyline for the two of them coming up. Until then, I don't mind seeing Alex wrapped up in medical storylines. He's been through enough unnecessary relationship drama, so I'm okay with him and Jo remaining stagnant for a while as long as they're together and happy.

It just seems crazy to me that they're willing to totally destroy April / Jackson when it's such an easy way to appease so many fans. Meredith and Derek, Alex and Izzie, Cristina and Owen, etc. all ended because an actor chose to leave. Here, they have Sarah and Jesse willing to stick around, both seemingly very invested in the 'Japril' storyline... and they're just writing April off after 9 years.

Unless Krista for some reason thinks that Grey's will run until season 55, it doesn't make sense.

  6. I really hope they just have some grant some up for Arizona and Carina in New York. It's super easy, but I'd rather that than something that doesn't make sense. And I don't want Arizona dead. I was just thinking how odd it is that Vernoff would want to off these two considering Arizona and April were both introduced when she was the head writer back in seasons 5 and 6.

  7. I don't think they're making it any more Meredith's show than it was originally. It has always worked best, in my opion, when most stories anchor back to Meredith. That doesn't mean she needs to be involved in every story by any means, but that it makes the most sense to have an anchor other than the hospital itself. Certain seasons were just too damn bloated and it felt like nothing was connected. Now, I'd trade Maggie & Amelia for April & Arizona any day. But from a storytelling perspective, I get why April and Arizona maybe feel more expendable... still, I think it's a really dumb move. They should have cut DeLuca or paired him back with Maggie to actually make him relevant. Jackson and April are established more than enough to exist on their own, and they both have PLENTY of relationships to existing cast members (April/Owen, April/Jackson/Catherine, etc.)

I'm not going to quit watching the show over this by any means, but I've been enjoying this season so much that this news is perhaps hitting extra hard. It just seems uncessesary. And I don't think Ellen is happy as I keep seeing people on Twitter insinuate. If you pay attention to BTS stuff, she seems to be the closest with Camila and Jessica, so I doubt she wanted to see Arizona go.

I'm feeling a bit of 'careful what you wish for' because I've been begging for a big cast trim for ages, and while Steph and Ben were never favorites of mine and Riggs I could do with or without, saying goodbye April and Arizona at this point feels like a big loss.

My friend (who posted on PTV briefly a couple years before I joined) said she heard that it was so they could pay Ellen Pompeo more money. But wasn't there a news release shared on here about a month or two ago about Ellen getting a raise? Or is that the same thing and we're just finding out the official news on April's fate now? Also, has it been confirmed that they are going to kill her off? To be honest, I expected her to commit suicide before the February (?) mini hiatus. Is it bad I wish it had gone that way in that episode instead of having to go through this? :/

Honestly people are making a much bigger deal out of Ellen's pay raise than it really is. She isn't getting that much more than she already was. With Dempsey and Oh gone they freed up a lot of money, and we also lost Riggs and Ben as regulars this year and Stef last year. There's no way they didn't have the money to continue paying Sarah and Jessica. Keep in mind, Ellen divulged in her HR interview that Grey's has generated $3B for Disney. They have the money.

I have felt that Arizona sort of just drifted since Callie left, but I've really been enjoying her this year with Carina. And I think April has the strongest episode of her characters entire time on the show just a few weeks ago (when Matthew's wife died). So I'm just a bit confused as to why exactly this HAD to happen. I do believe that Vernoff wanted to cut some people because the cast was unreasonably large and that makes it harder to tell stories. But... cut fucking DeLuca or Amelia / Owen. Restrain yourself from making the new interns regulars next year.

I do believe part of it is refocusing the show on Meredith & her inner-circle like the early days, which makes sense with Jackson hooking up with Maggie and the inevitable Owen / Amelia repairing. Jo and Meredith are closer now, Alex is her BFF, she has a long rich history with Richard and Bailey, etc. But these actresses have been with the show for nearly a decade each and they have huge fanbases. It's seems very silly to me to be cutting beloved characters (and cast-members) when they're willing to stick around. April / Jackson is such an easy way to make so many fans happy.

Also, the flashback of her father looked nothing like the actor who played him back in season 4.

Bialey's dad was never in season 4, but they used the same actor that has played her father in season 6 & 9.

  11. Some casting news:

The ABC medical drama has enlisted actress Candis Cayne (Transparent) for a multiple-episode arc in season 14. The 'Transparent' and 'I Am Cait' alum will play a patient in a multiple-episode run. Cayne will play a transgender patient who comes to Grey Sloan for what is being described as a "groundbreaking" vaginoplasty surgery. The character is inspired by a story that the writers on Grey's Anatomy read about Hayley Anthony, a trans woman who helped Jess Ting, the director of surgery at the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Mount Sinai, create a groundbreaking new procedure for vaginoplasty surgeries.

In the Spoilers and Speculation thread, @BaseOps wrote:

I will admit that I have a problem with Owen and Arizona being in a relationship with same person almost simultaneously.  It's not really for any moral issue--I don't look to this show to be any sort of purity standard--but because of the fact that Arizona has already been in that position with Mark and Callie.  Now, true--Carina is not Callie and Owen is so, so, so not Mark, but the dynamics are similar enough that it all seems like a repeat to me.  Plus, I really despise Carinaalso,  (the character....also, the actor leaves me cold).

However, I would actually be down for an uncomplicated fling for Arizona.  We know that she's had them in the past and sort of off-camera, but all we've really seen is her jumping headfirst into relationships (ironically, Callie was the one she didn't do this for!).  This, of course, would necessitate a new cast member--but I'd be happy if they replaced Carina with someone new.  And it would be nice for it to not be a doctor (or nurse).  There are actually people who work in hospitals who don't fall into either of those categories.

I don't really see the dynamic as similar at all. I mean, Carina hooked up with Owen briefly after Arizona cut off their tryst. Arizona didn't even appear to be upset that Carina moved onto Owen, which also ended quickly and seemingly without hard feelings. Now we're just seeing flirtation between Arizona & Carina again. The Callie / Mark / Arizona thing was very, very different to me - Mark and Callie were best friends with a sexual history, Arizona and Callie got serious, Arizona left and Mark got Callie pregnant - that was a whole jumbled ball of drama. This is, to me, just a few people having fun. I imagine Carina and Arizona will get serious as the season progresses, though. I'd honestly prefer Carina to stick around at this point rather than introduce another new love interest for Arizona who will likely be just as polarizing.

  13. Justin Bruening is returning as Matthew for an episode this spring. Per EW:

Details on what brings Matthew back into the picture, or when he’ll return, are being kept under wraps other than this tease from Grey’s boss Krista Vernoff: “Matthew Taylor will pay a visit to Grey Sloan and the impact of his return will see April reevaluating some of the decisions she has made in her life.”

  14. I doubt Kevin McKidd is going anywhere. I could see Kim Raver signing on full time next year.

I'm in the minority in that I don't mind Carina. I like that she's fun and uncomplicated. It's nice to see both Owen and Arizona smiling again over flings after all the doom and gloom that has followed both of their relationships over the years.

  15. I was wondering if they'd even crack a 2.0... those numbers are massive. It beat last week's mid-season premiere of The Good Doctor in the demo (1.6) and this weeks episode (1.7), though The Good Doctor leads in overall viewers. Grey's has the highest demo on ABC this week (Modern Family did a 1.8) and the 2nd-highest among dramas on all of broadcast behind only This Is Us (2.5). It's crazy that at premiere week Will & Grace was ahead of Grey's, and now they're down to a 1.3.

  16. After 9 episodes I can safely say that this is easily the best season so far since the first half of the series’ run. This is the type of episode you get when no one is just going through the motions – Krista Vernoff of is a phenomenal writer and show-runner, and everything she does is so purposeful. The direction, acting, and script tonight was all top-notch. I love how even April and Owen got something cool to do when they weren't the focus of the episode, and other stories continue to slowly develop in the background rather than being totally stagnant (DeLuca and his sex-friend being put on Amelia's service, Arizona helping Jo and Meredith, April taking over the competition).

As others pointed out, the way they played on Jo’s anxiety was incredible. I loved the attention to detail: the way she pulled her hand away when he reached for the pen on the table to sign the divorce papers, the way she flinched when he so much as raised a finger to her face in the residents’ lounge, etc. Camilla knocked it out of the park, and having Alex and Meredith support her was great. Alex’s face when he first saw Paul gave me chills.

I was also already really enjoying the scenes of Bailey with the intern, and that final, subtle reveal was incredible. I love that they made sure to build the intern, Casey, as a fully-formed character before the reveal that he is a trans man. Often when we see trans characters on TV, we get stories either focused on coming out or a transition – here, it was simply a small aside that added to this already-interesting new character.

Krista and the actor, Alex Blue Davis, speak about developing the storyline here

Was that the end of Jaggie? Regardless, it was nice to see Maggie acknowledge how the audience seems them (ie. weird).

  17. Ellen Pompeo has inked a new 2-year deal; she becomes a producer on Grey's and a co-executvie producer on the spin-off. Pompeo is now the highest-paid woman on television.

This interview that she did with Deadline is a great read, but this one with HR is INCREDIBLE. Seriously, if you like Grey's / strong women - READ THIS.

For me, Patrick [Dempsey] leaving the show [in 2015] was a defining moment, deal-wise. They could always use him as leverage against me — "We don't need you; we have Patrick" — which they did for years. I don't know if they also did that to him, because he and I never discussed our deals. There were many times where I reached out about joining together to negotiate, but he was never interested in that. At one point, I asked for $5,000 more than him just on principle, because the show is Grey's Anatomy and I'm Meredith Grey. They wouldn't give it to me. And I could have walked away, so why didn't I? It's my show; I'm the number one. I'm sure I felt what a lot of these other actresses feel: Why should I walk away from a great part because of a guy? You feel conflicted but then you figure, "I'm not going to let a guy drive me out of my own house."

So, what does it look like when he leaves the show? First, it looks like a ratings spike, and I had a nice chuckle about that. But the truth is, the ink wasn't even dry on his exit papers before they rushed in a new guy. I was on vacation in Sicily, decompressing — it was a long working relationship and it was a tumultuous end and I needed a moment to just chill with some rosé — and they're calling me, going, "What do you think of this guy?" "What do you think of this guy?" And they're sending pictures. I was like, "Are you people fucking nuts? Why do you feel that you have to replace this person?" I couldn't believe how fast the studio and the network felt like they had to get a penis in there. We brought in Martin Henderson, but they didn't love the storyline, so that ended.
