  1. So I was lucky enough to screen the 300th episode and it's absolutely fantastic. It's so whimsically nostalgic but also really drives the plot forward in a number of ways. Meredith and Alex are the stars, but everyone has something to do. There's a big focus on the first day of the new interns (hanging out in the tunnels!). The patients really do remind you of George / Cristina / Izzie, and it feels like they honor them. There's also some other nice little nods to the past, and they weren't kidding when they said there's easter eggs for the die-hard fans. Nearly every scene has some subtle callbacks. The general theme is that we're always moving forward, nothing stays the same, etc.

'Nobody knows where they might end up...'

  2. From TVLine:

“Matthew is coming back as Dr. Paul Stadler and we are facing the issue of domestic violence head-on,” co-showrunner Krista Vernoff confirmed to TVLine over the weekend at the ABC drama’s 300th episode soiree in Los Angeles. The EP was quick to assure fans, however, that Morrison’s return — and the dark cloud he’ll be bringing with him — would not upend Season 14’s lighter tone.

“I’ve talked a lot about how this season [we’re refocusing the show on] fun and joy and laughter, and my commitment has been to make sure there’s laughter in every episode — even the ones where the stories that we’re telling are quite painful and quite dark,” Vernoff explains. “And my hope is that women will come out of this story feeling empowered. I’m really proud of this story. I’m really proud of the work that we’re doing.”

I loved, loved, loved the original interns as a group, and even though the show has been without them longer than it was with them, I still consider them the heart of the show, so I am really looking forward to this episode. Frankly, I would be thrilled if it was just the five original characters sitting around reminiscing, but I know that's not gonna happen. And I know that  many people would hate that too!

I like that they're going into the episode with the intention of being nostalgic and honoring the past but also continuing to push the story forward with new interns, Carina / Owen, Meredith's medical storyline, the Jo divorce story, etc. I honestly think Vernoff has been so incredible in giving the show a fantastic (and much-needed) jolt this season. The fact that in 5 episodes she was able to effectively remove 8 or so seasons worth of dark cobwebs from Owen Hunt's brain and allow the poor guy to smile again, have Jo finally get focus and actually TALK TO ALEX even as they allow Alex & Meredith's friendship to remain integral and organic, and give every character something to do, is just incredible. I'm just thrilled with everything so far and I can't wait to see what they have planned for the 300th.

  4. From EW:

George and Cristina won’t be the only ghosts haunting Grey’s Anatomy‘s 300th episode.

The landmark hour finds all hands on deck as the docs of Grey Sloan tend to patients of a roller coaster accident who spark memories of their past; for example, two of them look eerily similar to George O’Malley (T.R. Knight) and Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh). But EW can now reveal that there will also be another patient who reminds the docs of Katherine Heigl’s Izzie Stevens. That means the original Fab Five interns, which also included Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), will sort of be reunited during the 300th episode!

“Cristina, George, and Izzie we’re thinking about a lot during this episode because our three guest actors on the show actually really look like them and remind the rest of the doctors of those characters,” Sarah Drew says. “That causes the original group to really remember those people well and want to fight for these ones to live.”

$100 bucks says the Izzie look-a-like dies.

That moment when Jackson referred to Maggie as his sister was so completely out of the blue that I had to rewind to make sure I heard him correctly.  It made and makes no fucking sense and is just as stupid as the idea of the two of them getting together when all the evidence proves they have no chemistry.

It's because his mom called Maggie his sister 2 episodes ago.

  6. From TVLine:

Grey’s remains committed to finding a new love for Mer. Sources confirm to me exclusively that the show is quietly searching for a fortysomething actor to play a major new love interest opposite Ellen Pompeo. Character details are sketchy, but I’m told the guy in question will be a doctor from a foreign country who is sexy, fiery, impulsive and passionate about medicine. He also shares something major in common with Mer in that one of his parents (in his case his pa) was/is a renowned surgeon.

    Also, from ABC:

  7. So next week we have patients that remind Mer & Alex of George & Cristina... I really hope that they pay tribute to Izzie too, and not in the way they often do (referring to her as Alex's crazy ex). I get that Shonda doesn't love Katherine Heigl, but Izzie was - whether you like(d) her or not - part of the show's heart for a long time. She was a big part of what brought people in (the original promos hammered her "HOW COULD I POSSIBLY PRACTICE MEDICINE CARRYING THESE THINGS AROUND!?" speech for weeks before the show premiered) and what made Grey's a cultural obsession, between her friendship with George and her relationships with Denny and Alex. I hated how she was written out, which admittedly was Heigl's fault apparently, but I still hope they honor her as having been a really important part of the series, and specifically of the original 5 interns.

AAAAAAAAAAND.....as we expected, Sophia is coming back aged up as "5 minutes from being a teenager", which means, of course, that Zoe and the rest of Meredith's imaginary children will be aged up appropriately as well.

Zola is in the promo for next week and it's the same actress who played her since season 11. I have a feeling Sofia will be the same actress that appeared during season 12.

  9. I'm continuing to really enjoy the fun, breezy tone of this season. The patient stories were good, there was a lot of heart, some silliness, some sexiness... it was pretty much typical Grey's. I really like that they're focusing on medicine again. We're finally seeing Jo excel as a surgeon, Meredith has been badass all season, and I like Jackson's idea, too. I thought the guy's scenes were pretty funny. It's nice to see them all just smiling for once, and there were a few really good lines. I chuckled at Alex's "He makes good speeches" line while Webber was talking.

I don't mind Carina. I'm not sure she has potential long-term, but I have no problem with seeing some of the doctors have some fun, and that's basically what she's brought. It was great see both Amelia and Owen with other people tonight. It's hard to believe that was only episode 6, because last season all of this movement would have taken ages.

I'm so thrilled to see them approaching Jo's storyline in a way that empowers her rather than making her the victim again. I feel like coming into her own as a surgeon has helped to push her to realize her worth, and with having the secret out there + Alex by her side, Jo is easily the most confident she's been since she was introduced in season 9. There's a lot of growth there, and potential for more. I'd love to see her keep working in general with Meredith, too. They play well off each other.

  10. From Entertainment Weekly: "Jo’s past will soon come back to haunt her. Sources tell me that Matthew Morrison will reprise his role as Jo’s abusive husband, Paul, early in the New Year as Grey’s plans to delve deep into a powerful domestic violence storyline."

Paul is confirmed to appear in episode 14x09, which is the mid-season premiere.

BaseOps, thanks for the clips!  Those of us who have been here since episode 1 have been through a lot with these characters.

I actually got a bit emotional watching some of the interviews. I've watched since the series premiered, which is insane - I was in 8th grade then, and I'm 26 now. I can connect every season / set of characters to different times in my life, relationships, friendships, etc. It's really nice to put aside the nitpicking and criticism of the series and appreciate what it's done for the viewers, and for television at large. It's also great to feel like the show is going into episode 300 really strong, with a season that has been superb so far.

  12. ABC News and talk shows will join in celebrating the historic 300th episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” with a special “Day of Grey’s” initiative on Thursday, November 9, the day the 300th episode airs.

The celebration begins the evening prior on Wednesday, November 8, when “Jimmy Kimmel Live” hosts Jesse Williams (Dr. Jackson Avery), as an in-studio guest. On November 9, “Good Morning America” will go behind the scenes on the set of “Grey’s Anatomy” while Ellen Pompeo (Dr. Meredith Grey) will be live in-studio in New York. Pompeo will also be a guest that day on nationally syndicated “Live with Kelly and Ryan.” From there, she will drop by both “The View” and “The Chew.” “Nightline” will close out the celebration with more behind-the-scenes coverage of one of television’s longest-running dramas.

  13. Full release for the mid-season finale is still pretty cryptic in terms of what the doctors are actually up to.

On the episode “Out of Nowhere” – A hacker compromises the hospital’s computer system, causing monitors, phones, labs and patient files to all go down. As technology fails them, Bailey attempts to keep the peace but chaos erupts and the doctors are forced to get creative in their methods to treat the patients, on the fall finale of “Grey’s Anatomy,” THURSDAY, NOV. 16 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EST). Guest starring is Stefania Spampinato as Carina DeLuca. “Out of Nowhere” was written by William Harper and directed by Kevin McKidd.

In the preview for the next episode (the guys on the boat) there’s a scene with the women. At least I think it’s April.

    That's not April, it's a guest star.

  14. More new blood. From Hollywood Reporter:

    Quote

A day after series regular Martin Henderson and recurring guest star Abigail Spencer exited, the ABC Shondaland drama has enlisted One Tree Hill grad Bethany Joy Lenz. The actress will have a guest arc on the show's 14th season and play Jenny. In typical Shondaland fashion, character details are being kept under wraps. A total number of episodes is also being kept under lock and key.

1.8 and 7.7 million in overnights. With a slightly bigger drop than usual in the half hours. Possibly people realizing it was a centric and not being into it.

SpoilerTV is showing that it went up in the second half?

    8:00 - 7.22 million (#1), A18-49: 1.7/ 7 (#1) VS 8:30 - 7.49 million (#2), A18-49: 1.8/ 7 (#2)

Regarding a new love interest for Meredith:  I get the feeling that neuro might be her new love interest; or, at least, something related to her career.

Yea, Vernoff has spoken about wanting to see Meredith really shine as a surgeon this year - I'm not sure it will necessarily be in neuro, though one could argue that there have been hints that she'd go back to that. But she did a really badass surgery on Meghan and we're seeing a decidedly more mature, focused, and content Meredith, and I think is on purpose.

  17. We're down to only 13 regular cast members; 12 once Ben leaves for the spin-off. I'm sure we'll have someone new by the end of the season, but I'm quite liking the trimming of the cast + the injection of some fun new blood (Carina, Dr Koracick, etc). Last year we had 15, and in S12 there was 16 regulars. Plus, the new characters - as introduced by Vernoff - tend to be more fun than full of baggage (look at Carina, Glasses, and Dr Koracick vs the last few new additions before them... Minnick, Penny, and the utterly useless reintroduction of Leah).

I wish they'd bring back the surgeon who operated on Amelia.  He was fun.

He's coming back! He's listed as a guest star for at least 1 more episode.

This exit of Riggs confirmed for me that they will go there with Alex/Meredith. There's nobody else to put her with now they've removed her love interest. I had wondered why they reunited Jolex so quickly but now I'm thinking it was just about to break them up for good eventually.

But this is literally what people said all year last year too (and the year before). There was no one else to put her with after Derek died, but they brought in the army surgeon (Will I think?) and Riggs. They would have written out Jo if that was the point, or they at least wouldn't have put in all this work reuniting Jo and Alex over the last few episodes. They were already broken up and living apart.

  19. Shonda confirmed on Twitter that this was the end of Nathan. I thought tonight was a really great episode. It was well written, and a proper swan song for Riggs and a nice way to nudge Owen towards maybe finding some happiness.
