  1. As for Hannibal-based reading, what are people's opinions of Hannibal Rising? A return to form for Harris, or more in the vein of Hannibal WTFery?

WTFery. It's not as bad as I had heard it was, but, lawd, it wasn't good.

Group Question:  Not playing the nerd, but I'm wondering if we ought to move this recommendation discussion to the general chat thread?  I felt weird in the media thread writing about The Gap, series of books no one has ever read or heard of.  LOL

Go for it. How about, "Food for thought"?

  2. I don't like Hannibal, can you tell?  (I get that he's seductive.  I get that.  I just can't forget that he's an utter monster who abused the living shit out of Will at every opportunity.)

For some reason, I can get get past that. What I can't get past is that he always looks like he's supressing a smirk, which I completely repulsive. Although I think Mads Mikkelsen is smokin hot, he plays Hannibal in a way that, if I met him in real life, would set off every possible alarm in my reptilian brain. I would never let myself be alone in a room with that guy, or even within arm's reach of him.

In conclusion, Mads is freaking amazing.

  3. I'm not sure what I think is the most shocking. I think maybe Beverly, because until we actually saw it, I thought she might be alive. Then there was the judge with his head cut open, I had to look at that a few times to make sure I was really seeing what I thought I was seeing.

The worst was Dr. Sutcliffe from "Buffet Froid;" that corpse basically looked like something from a Tim Burton horror-comedy.

That's what I thought about the Totem Pole guy.

  4.  I wonder if it got a bit out of hand and transformed a character from demented serial killer to seductive vampire-like Svengali?

Personally, I don't think so - I think that's how Hannibal sees himself, though. The show is trying to balance how Hannibal sees himself and what he's actually done. For me it works.

  5. So, on the off chance that anyone is reading these threads...

In the first chapter, Aeron reflects that there are 4 kings in Westeros. I can only think of 3, since Robb Stark and Renly Baratheon are both dead. Balon Greyjoy and Stannis Baratheon both claim to be king, and Tommen Baratheon is actually on the throne. Am I missing one?

  6. Of Bradbury's, I read one short story (Dark they Were, and Golden-Eyed) and one novel (Something Wicked This Way Comes) and they didn't grab me.

Pratchett bugs me. I know I'm completely alone in that. I find his style to cute. Oddly, I don't mind when Neil Gaimen's style gets cute.

  7. I'm sure Harris DIDN'T ever want or expect us to fall for Hannibal. but Harris' Hannibal and Bryan Fuller's Hannibal are, at this point, two entirely different constructs. You either like Fuller's iteration or you don't but I'm not sure they can even be compared anymore.

He had to know there were people who love fictional serial killers, and people who romanticize real life ones, but he couldn't have expected Hannibal Lecter to be the runaway hit he was. I think it's mostly Anthony Hopkins' fault. Cox didn't bring the charm like Hopkins did. But yeah, Fuller's "fallen angel" version is very different.

  8. About Clash of the Titans:

AskMen.com felt actor Sam Worthington's heavy Australian drawl was so distracting it "manages not only to single-handedly unhinge any suspension of disbelief we might have had, but his fellow actors often seem to be visibly struggling as they impart fantastical ancient truths to a true-blue brickie in a studded leather dress."

  9. I saw Charlie Countryman. Mads was scary as hell in that. Way scarier than he was in Hannibal. Plus, any movie about smaking the living daylights out of Shia LeBouf gets my vote.

Star Wars crossover: Nah, it would be easy. The whole covert Sith lord ostensibly assisting the Jedi is already rampant in Star Wars. Will is a Temple Jedi who goes to Hannibal for help tracking down a mysterious Sith lord, who is secretly Hannibal's apprentice... wait, that was actually one of the movies, wasn't it?

Yes, Mads is Danish. I think most of his films are Danish. He's completely fluent in Swedish. I think his French is about on par with his English, but I don't know French. He learned Russian for Coco & Igor. Not very well, apparently.

  10. Clash of the Titans: If they had cast a real actor as the hero, I would have been all over that.

Valhalla Rising: The plot is that a bunch of vikings wander around lost until they all die.

Bladerunner: I saw the movie but the book stayed witn me more. I love Philip K. Dick but I often feel like I've missed the point. I find him haunting.

Dune: One of the best books EVER.

  11. I'd like to see book and movie recs from the smart, witty, and mildly twisted people on this board.

I can recommend pretty much everything Mads Mikkelsen has done, because among his many superpowers is the power of choosing really good scripts. Well, "Valhalla Rising" is pretty aimless, but it's beautiful.

And while you're browsing Danish videos, the TV series "The Kingdom" is about as twisted as you could ask for.

Now that we're in a (perpetual?) holding pattern for Season 4, does anyone have any fic recs? I won't judge. It's just so hard to wade through the masses...

Darn, you know, I did read one that fit in with the show so well that it totally helped my jonsing for it during the last hiatus, but I can't remember the title of it now. On AO3 I usually delete my bookmarks after finishing a story, otherwise they pile up. I'll see if I can find it but it was at least a year ago...

  12. About Molly:

I just finished the book this morning. She doesn't leave him but he thinks she's going to. I don't believe it's ever mentioned again.

I really liked her on the show though - wish they'd done more with her. Maybe that was the plan for season 4, have her save Will from Hannibal.

  13. We don't really know what Will was like before Hannibal's influence, since they meet in the first episode. The first time we see Will, Jack is accosting him and trying to drag him into somehting he knows is bad for him, so he has all his defenses up. We don't *really* know how antisocial he was before. Well, no, the FIRST time we see him is in a flashback, where he's really confident about what he's doing. But there he's "in the zone" so we're not seeing his everyday self. Also, I think he already had the encephalitis. Wasn't he popping aspirin from the beginning? I'm not sure about that.

  14. I think if Will had gone along with it, at least before the murder orgy, Hannibal probably would have been suspicious. Then Will would have been suspicious. And then it would end up like a melodramatic opera version of "gay chicken" to see who gives away their true intentions first.

Actually you're right, it would probably go that way. Gay chicken.... to the death!

I wonder what they would have put Chilton through next year, since Bryan Fuller called him their "Kenny" (from South Park).

Let's see... I'm trying to think of gruesome deaths from the book that they haven't done yet that could still be inflicted on Chilton. They've already done eviscerated (tree times), burned alive, face cut off and stuck on some one else, face torn off and eaten (twice if you count the lip), choked by an eel, skull cut open (twice), eaten by pigs, stuck in a well, strangled with a chain...

  15. He started using sex when he got out of prison.  Showing up at the office with that haircut.  Letting Hannibal wash the blood off his knuckles, his warmth at the museum, and finally that impossibly flirty "please".

I suppose he did. But if Hannibal had actually made a pass at him, would Will have gone along with it to keep the game going?
