  1. I got the impression that Abbey Weitzeil was devastated, because she thought it was her fault that she didn't win it for the rest of her team. It must be tough to be handed a lead and not be able to keep it. That being said, a silver medal is an awesome achievement and they should be really pleased. The Australian women swam brilliantly and deserved to win.
  2. Seriously. Imagine being so selfish and ungracious that you cause someone to lose their lifelong dream of winning an Olympic medal.
  3. Oh, that's right. I forgot that Allyson couldn't do both these games. Thanks, @emmawoodhouse!
  4. Yes, I find myself wondering how Richardson or McNeal would have done. I'm especially bummed for McNeal, as a five-year suspension seems really, really extreme. I hope Prandini or Felix hold their own in the 200 m. (Edited, because the least I can do is spell her name right)
  5. Great job, US Men! The streak continues. And a world record, too! I'm happy that Andrew's only medal came from a team win. I hope that helps pry him away from his creepy family and start getting some decent coaching.
  6. I hate to say this and I would love to be wrong, but, judging from some of the hatred I observed on social media, before I started muting and blocking, there were an outspoken minority who would have been pleased if Simone had gotten hurt. Oh, maybe not badly hurt, but badly enough that she wouldn't be able to compete. These were the same people who vociferously protested against the "GOAT" on her leotard, even though she's earned it multiple times over, or about her speaking out about the Federation. They would have been maybe a little sorry, but that's what you get, when you push the bounds of the sport beyond what is safe, right? The fact that she decided that her life and health were worth more than an Olympic medal (not to mention that the team had a better chance of medaling without her, given her current health condition) infuriated them. They wanted her to be a character in a saga, not a real, live human being. Again, I'd love to be wrong about this, but there was an undertone to some of those posts that was really quite disturbing.
  7. I wish more people realized how incredibly dangerous is it to compete without an air sense. Simone could very easily have been seriously injured or even killed. I'm so glad she realized what was going on and pulled out.
  8. They're showing some of the early track and field heats on USA right now. It's really fun to see less well-known runners (to me, at least) get so excited about setting national records. One of the runners just now also just ran her first sub-11 time in the 100 m.
  9. It's ridiculous that I was getting nervous watching Suni on beam, even knowing she had won. I took gymnastics as a young thing, as part of a sports camp. We didn't do much more than spotted tumbling, simple leaps and dance moves on the beam, but that thing was so narrow. These days, athletes are doing things on the beam that weren't even being thought of for the floor.
  10. Great race, ladies! Schoenmaker's reaction to her win and world record were awesome. So happy for King and Lazor, too.
  11. I really have to hand it to Tim and Nastia this evening. They are focused, giving good commentary and insight, and showcasing all of the athletes. I hope everyone involved (not just them) is engaging in some self-reflection on how they helped create this insane, pressure-filled atmosphere.
  12. I enjoyed the 3-on-3 women's competition. Shoutout to Kelsey Plum, the NCAA scoring record-holder, who just won her first gold medal! I'm hoping she'll be on the (regular?) basketball team, after Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi retire.
  13. US women's is volleyball looking pretty good. This has nothing to do with anything, but it seems that half of the women's starting lineup is named Jordan. The announcers have started using nicknames.
  14. I grew up in the Twin Cities and remember meeting fairly recent Hmong refugees when I was a little girl and hearing about their extremely difficult journey to the USA. The Lees sound like an amazing family. I so hope she does well in the team and all-around final wins bars gold.
  15. During the trials, they ran a story of King going to the funeral of the father of one of her teammates, and promising her mother that she would take care of her (the teammate) and do everything her power to help her make the team - and she did! She even beat King, who was really happy for her. I kind of like her unapologetic, wanting-to-win persona, but, back 1,000 years ago when I did sport, young women and girls had to be gracious and "nice" all of the time. It's refreshing that today's athletes are pressured less to care about such things.
  16. Oh, thank God. The last two guys stayed on. There were some scary falls going on. Also, I understand that one of the competitors is competing with a BROKEN WRIST. I cannot even imagine. Apparently, he just told the interviewer that it was incentive for him to stay on his board.
  17. The announcers really need to cool it with the superlatives. Every time they start going on and on about how great someone is, the poor guy falls off of the board. I'm happy for the skateboarders that they finally have their Olympic events, but I'm not sure I know enough to understand what makes one run better than another. Other than falling off, of course. I'm also used to seeing people doing these kinds of events wearing helmets, so it's making me nervous.
  18. Congratulations to Yui Ohashi for winning a GOLD MEDAL for the host country! Amazing, when she wasn't even considered a serious contender.
  19. I was so happy for him! But I wanted him to have someone to celebrate with. Someone give that guy a hug! What an amazing swim.
  20. I prefer Nastia to Tim, especially for the women's events. Tim sounds a bit like a know-it-all for women and his commentary is a bit cringey. I did prefer Nastia's prior look (i.e. the polo shirts) to the high-fashion looks and am wondering if Tara and Johnny's over-the-top apparel for the skating events has something to do with it. I can't believe she'd start wearing that look on her own.
  21. I enjoyed that more than I thought I would. I don't mind Daniel Gil as much as some do, although I think he's a bit much. I did like the lawyer ninja's ad and was happy to see him win the Power Tower. It really helped that the teens were just one category of competitors tonight, not completely dominant. I also liked tonight's teens - the trombone player is a badass, and Isaiah and Isabella Wilkerson were really awesome. She really is incredible. It also helped that Tianna Webberley made it through, as she is one of my favorites. I also thought the gentleman from Guam was amazing. It was nice to see how happy and pumped he was to be going to Vegas. Very sad to see Sam Sann and Jonathan Horton go out. I agree it's completely obnoxious to not show the entire run of the finishers. What the heck did Abel Gonzalez ever do to them? He's an incredible, high-level athlete. They've been doing that forever in favor of endless backstories and useless filler and I wish they'd stop.
  22. Oh, Michael Torres.... (SOB!) He is one of my favorites and I am so sad for him. SOOOOO delighted for Flex, though. And glad that Flip made it through. Yes, I couldn't decide if the fondness for the cat was the shtick, or if he's just one of those people who doesn't do grief publicly. I did like how unimpressed Hashbrown looked about the whole thing. The mentor angle makes the teen-invasion more interesting, although I did think the father "threatening" his son with more chores and duties if he didn't beat him was a bit much. I get that it's a show and that he was probably kidding, but, dude, support your son in coming out there and doing his best! I was amused when his kid beat him, though. I wonder if that means he gets a later curfew.
  23. So smart. Apparently, there are markers in the track that got up to about 145 degrees (F).

    Gymnastics

It really does. I'm comforted to think that he might actually retire this year, and we might get to see some fresh new faces. He's a brilliant gymnast - when he's on - and seems like a nice guy, but it is so, so hard to watch. And he keeps getting endless chances. Scores or no scores, the guy has never had a clean international meet. He was overscored here - fourth after falling off of the pommel? Really? But, for some reason, USA men's gymnastics never takes a chance on someone new. Which is why we are always "on the verge" of medaling, but hardly ever medal.

Well, this is disappointing. I really feel so badly for the fourth guy, whoever he was, that should have gone instead of Sam.
