  1. I'm starting to get uncomfortable with where this show might be headed. I feel sorry for Cody, who is so willing to be treated poorly. Annoying as he is, I wish Krystal would show him some kindness. I also feel horrible Ernie got all those immigrants to buy into FAM.  And I hate to see any act of violence toward animals (even if I can tell myself this is just a show and it didn't really happen)....  Plus, I'm struggling with why so many people are blindly following Obie, who utterly lacks charisma. Normally people in his position get followers by their charm & magnetism, and I see none in him. Is it a statement that people are so desperate for something meaningful in their lives that they are willing to follow anyone?  Maybe.

Brainwashed feels about right. I think he's been re-programmed in some way. I was reminded of both very "happy" $cientologists and people in the sunken place in Get Out.

He totally had grandpa vibes from "Get Out", so I made that connection right away too... but I don't think he is brainwashed.  My theory is he managed to get hired on Obie's island as a worker and he is hoping for an opportunity to kill Obie - but he's afraid the island has constant surveillance so he couldn't break character & be honest with Krystal.  Of course, I might be totally off base.

  3. Ridiculous. The whole hour. Why are we getting these random POV segments?- Janeen, Whitney, ...who next?  And who cares?  The only thing I enjoyed in this episode was learning Helen is tapped out financially. That was the only moment of the hour that made any sense to me.

And what will we see next week in Joanie's life?  Her sitting & eating a bowl of cereal?

I think Omar does like Avery, buuuuuuuuuuuut he's seeing a lot of very problematic things during this visit. She can't speak or read Arabic. She doesn't have any real skills or education. She doesn't have any money. Her family isn't particularly supportive. And Avery is immature and impulsive. I think he's thinking that he'd rather postpone things than drag her back to Syria and have her entirely dependant on him like the world's brattiest albatross. I think he'd rather she head back to the US, learn Arabic, and become an LVN or something so that even if they don't end up in the US that she's not isolated or entirely dependant on him.

I feel like Omar is probably the only Muslim man on this show who actually knows his scripture. Khadijah, the Prophet's first wife, was older than he was when they married (40 to his 25). He was her 3rd husband and she was a successful merchant. I don't think Omar wants Avery dependent.

Darcey and Stacey love and loathe each other in equal measure. That fight when Darcey was arrested? Stacey was too. Darcey recently blew up Stacey's spot by outing that Stacey is subsidizing Florian in Albania and doesn't have enough money to bring him over on a K-1 visa. Also after 3 and a half years together, I'd expect a little Albanian out of Stacey. Maybe she's on the Tim plan.

People don't really understand that there are huge cultural differences that make no sense from the outside looking in. I'm Nigerian-American  there's shit in my family that is beyond perplexing to non-Nigerians. My parents still have friends who are livid because one of my brothers chose to elope with his girlfriend rather than have a wedding. It's been 15 years. I could have relatives come over to visit, pay for every meal at every Michelin starred restaurant in Manhattan, and they'd be like "it was ok, but Hunter didn't cook us a meal." And they are the same kind of way about having people stay in their homes. It seems weird to us, but there's a completely not nefarious completely legitimate cultural etiquette reason why they'd insist that a guest stay with them. I actually think that if they'd let him stay in the Airbnb, they're probably more likely to scam him out of cash.

Someone here recommended that Love Me documentary on YouTube. I watched it and a number of other. The thing that became obvious is that the scammers keep testing their limits with regards to cash. Is he willing to buy dinner? Is he willing to pay for my cell phone? What about something bigger? Then they go in for the kill. None of that has happened to Ben.

But Ben is a divorced dopey white guy from the states who I don't believe had particularly great career prospects. I also recall seeing somewhere that Akinyi's father is very much an anti-colonialist who was a Marxist in his youth, which is why his oldest son was named after Fidel Castro. I think dad and the family are pissed that Akinyi brought Ben to their house when she knew or should have known that much about Ben wouldn't make them happy. White. Yep. From America. Yep. Divorced. Yep. Not doing something important or a great career. Yep. Basically they want to know why her silly ass brought this dude to their house when he has all of their deal breakers.

Michael needs to walk away from Angela. She will have him LARPing 12 Years a Slave. Nothing good comes of playing by her rules. She will beat him, humiliate him, and keep him prisoner in her house until she's ready to discard him.

I just wanted to say Thank You for writing such an insightful post and sharing your knowledge & perspective. It’s really helpful in understanding Ben’s situation.

Plus I agree completely with your comments on the other couples, too.

  5. Don't hate me but I loved this episode.  I loved how no one is impressed with Noah any longer - and to see it from his POV is especially delightful to me.  I loved how Janeen's divorce was a perfect parallel of Noah/Helen's divorce, and how Noah felt like a scorned lover.  I loved how Sasha no longer treated Noah as special, and seemed totally irritated with him.  I loved Sasha calling out the possibility that Noah was manipulative to Alison, and telling Noah he shot the scene to reflect that.  I loved how Helen really, truly doesn't give a rat's ass about Noah any longer.  Basically, karma is playing out and it's making Noah lose his shit.  So satisfying to watch!  In Helen's segment, I loved that she feels giddy over Sasha being attracted to her.  I loved they showed her as calm & rational, and she is strong toward her mother.  And I found her sex scene with Sasha to be hilarious.

Now all that said, I really don't get Sasha as being a charismatic movie star; he seems really flat & dull to me. I have no interest whatsoever in Joanie's scenes.  And I hate the principal guy- why is he even part of this show??

I'm just coming here to say that it seems they're pretending the awful season 3 didn't exist.  I don't even think they showed anything of it the "previously on" timeline.  (I didn't pay close attention.)  Nothing that happened in season 3 really matters in the overall trajectory of the show.  I personally bailed on season 3 after a couple of episodes but read the comments here.

I think we are all pretending the awful season 3 didn't exist.

Yes, yes, yes, they changed the perspective and the timeline.  Sometimes I use too many words to express what I want to say and it gets lost in the message, but I completely agree, and wow, you have those differences down!  I only noticed about 2/3 of them, and I was watching.  You picked up on the emotional stuff about Helen's feelings of isolation much better than I did.

Thanks.  It resonated with me. My father just passed away & had the funeral last week, so it was very real to me.  And the truth was I was glad to see the show has continued with the different perspectives.  Noah feels so much guilt over leaving his family, he can't forgive himself even though Helen & the kids have clearly moved on....  BTW, I really liked your observation of Dominic West expertly maintaining his American accent during the first scene (I always forget he is British!).

I liked how this episode didn't just show different perspectives, it played with the time line.

I really enjoyed all your observations. I am just going to comment on the quote above. The show did show different perspectives, most noticeably with Noah & Helen having their individual POV the day of the funeral.  Noah saw Helen surrounded by the kids, wearing ethnic attire in honor of Vic, and ultimately angry at him (Noah) for leaving her. He saw himself more as an outsider to a family who was in mourning & supporting each other. Helen, on the other hand, saw herself as completely alone & numb & empty.  No awareness of kids giving her their support, wearing something she probably simply pulled from her closet, no concern about Vic's mother or the valet parking guys, and totally indifferent to Noah & his past betrayal.  I found her segment heartbreaking, and a real portrayal of how one feels when a loved one dies. Nothing else matters & one goes through the motions of what seems to be expected. I felt it was very effective.

Yes, she was really knocking back that wine.  Of course, since she was with Ashley, it was understandable, but I was hoping Production (who totally set up that whole meeting) had a driver for her.  She had to be legally drunk?

Didn't Naomie say she had only 45 minutes to meet with Ashley?  3 glasses of wine in 45 minutes!  - But I have to admit I found it pretty darn entertaining. Next time she should just order the bottle and drink straight from it.

  10. I’d love a challenge where the designers are barred from incorporating their signature looks- no corset for Garo, no puff for Jamall, no kitsch for Hester, no unfinished hems for Tessa, no top stitch for Sebastian, etc.  I can't really think what Bishme & Venny's specialties are, but you get the idea.  Make them break away from the one trademark element they continually fall back on.  And while I am dreaming, I would love an entire season where the designers are banned from using black, but maybe have one challenge where they can use only black.

  11. On the fabric choices in general... We can all criticize what the designers selected, but 30 minutes is not enough time at Mood for anyone to pick great fabric, let alone an entire team.  I think most designers gravitate toward solids over prints because picking a good print is really difficult.  Prints are very personal, and what works for a dress might not work well for sportswear.  Then solid fabric has to be selected to support the print, and the right shade, weight, weave has to be considered.  ...Now in this case it was just weird each team chose the same color palette, and it would have helped if the teams chose better prints to pull the colors together.  Sebastian's stripe (pants) was the most successful.  I think his team would have won if Tessa had chosen a print for her top (not the same as Sebastian's stripe because that would have been too matchy-matchy)- but I doubt time allowed for them to even consider it.  I think her model looked like a big ball of coral & that hurt the team overall.  I also think Lela's dress wasn't sexy enough for a night out in Rio.  But I still think their team produced the best collection and Sebastian deserved the win.

While I felt like a lot of Renee’s previous designs were too similar, I also thought - wow I could wear these and look good...

Hester’s aesthetic sadly reminds me of my need in early high school to be different (this was in the early 80’s) when I actually looked like an idiot.

I co-sign on both counts.  While I felt Renee's looks tended to be too similar each week, I gotta admit her aesthetic had a cool factor for a grown woman that I could really appreciate.  And yes, the 80's comment.  That was me.  Oy.

(PS- I agree with everything else you wrote, too.)

Kate's been on the bottom multiple times, she plods down the runway, they should not be keeping her just because she is big.

My guess is no one else is hiring her to do modeling work, so she's always available for this show.

  14. Why did no one choose Neoprene?!  Seemed like a no brainer, especially in a bright color.

Once again, I LOVED Sebastian's outfit. He should have been in the top 3 instead of Hester.

Is Hester going to dress in a way that matches her models every (not camping in nature) week?  They’ve given up the idea of blind judging right?  If not, she’s giving that away.

+1.    Hester designs for one customer: Herself.

  16. Let me get this straight... Rakan's fabric & design was based on a dress his grandmother would wear?  ...In whose world should that ever be inspiration for how to dress a modern woman?

Christie Brinkley kind of freaks me out. I don't want a 65 year old woman to look THAT young. Where does it end? I was recently introduced to an older lady who also must have done that level of cosmetic work done cuz she is in her 70's, but looks 40. When I shook her hand, the hand was 70! It scared me, y'all! I know you can also do the hands now, but again, where does it end.

Thank you!!!! She freaks me out, too. But it’s not just how desperate she is to look young with those god awful blond hair extensions & the bright makeup colors... but there is just something off about her. The way she speaks- stilted, rehearsed speech through a creepy huge smile, and the way she sits- overly poised, like a mannequin balanced in place too carefully. Everything about her seems fake.  She freaks me the f*ck out!! If she didn’t have 500 magazine covers, I would think she suffers from low self esteem (and hey, maybe she does in spite of it all, who knows?). I just keep thinking how much more attractive she would look with darker, shoulder length hair & soft, natural makeup.  And a relaxed face that doesn’t have all her teeth showing all the time. ... I came into the forum wondering if she bothered anyone as much as she bothers me, and I am so happy to see your comment! Thanks!

  18. I'm coming to the party late, but I'm curious of everyone's 3 least favorite characters?  Please pipe in.  For me...

    1.  Rebecca.  I seriously cringe whenever she comes on screen.  The young Rebecca is in a constant state of starry-eyed wonderment & marvel, especially about herself.  Ugh, it's so annoying.  Then the old Rebecca is completely sullen & joyless.  I get it - she lost the love of her life.  Does that mean a person never smiles or acts lighthearted again?  The old Rebecca always looks like she just sucked on a prune.

    2.  Kate.  I'm sorry to any Kate fans, but she's annoys me almost as much as Rebecca.  After 40 years she is still stumbling around with no direction.  Now she's a mom, oy vey.  Let's all sit back and see how she screws this up, too.

    3.  Jack.  I really loved Jack at first.  I found him charming & sweet.  But now that were in the 3rd season, I've seen him as such asshole.  I realize we are finally seeing his faults, but the writers have revealed so many this season that I can hardly remember those good feelings I once had for him.

    There.  I vented.  Thanks.
