  1. Another episode that is on point about education. The sub shortage is real. At my school, classes without subs get split among the grade level. I’ve had extra kids in my room at least once a week.

I do like the character growth they’re showing with Ava. It’s small, but I like it.

I have strong feelings about for-profit charter schools operating in similar capacities as Legendary Schools, so the last scene with Draemond both saddened me and made me pretty mad. I'm not really looking forward to this storyline continuing, but I nevertheless once again applaud the AE show runners and writers for touching on real issues that public city schools face.

Knowing how the showrunners feel about public Ed, I have a huge amount of faith that they will show how Abbott succeeds and thrives. And I will be cheering them on.

  3. Carole, if you know you need boiling water, and you know your water isn’t boiling, why don’t you fix it?

Also, I know this might be blasphemous, but Janusz’s last two showstoppers have looked almost identical. I love you Janusz, but variety is good too.

As I recall they did this as a technical in the past.  But it wasn't a themed show.

But, again, I don't think of frying something in oil as baking. I guess my scope is limited!

They did churros as a showstopper in the season Candice won. (My daughter and I are rewatching it on Roku.  Selasi is still adorable. 😀)

  5. It’s Mexican week. They were always going to go for tortillas. (Just like in Italian week, they went for pizza.). This show (Paul and Prue) isn’t very creative when it’s outside of British/French cuisine. I can’t complain too much about the mispronunciation, especially in the technical.  I’m sure there are terms I mispronounce when I’m at a Mexican restaurant. (Sometimes, I just point rather than massacring a language. 😀)

I think what was really bad were the extremely cringey and offensive jokes.

I realize charter schools are different across the country, but the one portrayed in the show is not typical for what we see around here.  They may look new/good from the outside, but the walls are paper thin and the furnishings are bare.

I suspect some of their inspiration for the charter school may have been the Ron Clark Academy.

  7. Loved this episode even more than the last one. I’ve taught in low income schools (though not inner city), and it shocks people when I tell them how much I spend just to make sure my kids have the supplies they need. (I second Donors Choose!  It’s a fantastic site. If you Twitter, searching #clearthelist pulls up tons of teachers with Amazon wish lists for their classrooms too.)

I really like the character growth we’ve seen from Ava. While she’s still insanely over the top, there are moments where she understands how important it is to make sure the kids feel loved and appreciated. And Janelle James plays her perfectly.

I get that, but if Jill said Jonathan is planning on buying a house, I don’t think “trailer.” But you’re probably right!

In the Midwest, lots of starter homes are mobile homes. Depending on how they’re set, sometimes you can’t tell the difference between them and a house built on site. Inside, they look just like a stick built home.

I’m always amazed at how many toys Amy buys in one shopping trip. And that is after raising two kids, and being told they had too many toys. They must have a heck of a lot storage at their house.

Does she buy them at consignment sales?  I have friends who buy tons of stuff at a big consignment sale near me and then sell them the next year (while buying a whole new haul).

Yes and no. In order to receive public sector forgiveness, you have to paid 120 qualified payments. The standard amortization schedule for student loans is 10 years (120 payments) so to actually get any benefit you had to have applied for income reduced payments which extends the period of the loan.

Because he’s at a low income school, after five years, he qualifies for $5K of loan forgiveness. (Which is a drop in the bucket, but every little bit helps.)

That's the impression I've gotten in online discussions--that it is more associated with the Midwest.

My mom made it for us growing up, and I’m from Northern Indiana. She just used cream of mushroom soup. When you’re a kid, it’s not bad. Ground beef, C of M soup, cheese, and tater tots.
