* Mom's next appointment is for Monday. She's got a small kidney stone that's being stubborn, so they're going to do the "smashing" thing. She's got some good meds and resting until then. She'll be fine though, so that's good.

If it makes you feel any better, AwesomO, last fall I got a random call from my mother (who lives a few states away) telling me she was on the way to have a pace-maker put in. I could've throttled her. When I finally pulled enough info out of her, apparently she knew this was coming for months, but been putting it off. But I wasn't to be worried because it was a simple procedure anymore and she'd probably be home by evening. Well, it didn't turn out to be so simple, in the end, and she ended up in the ICU for a week. When I asked her later why she hadn't told one of us kids about the procedure so someone could be there with her, she said "I didn't want to bother you."

 

Ironically, my mother used to call me rather irritated at my grandmother for much the same behavior. Oy vey...Mothers!

Aww, your mom sounds rather sweet, even if it is a bit frustrating. That's not my mother's deal, though. My mother's - and my grandfather's - thing is that they don't like to admit they might be sick or need medical attention. And my mother has a hang up about taking medicine. So their attitude is pretty much "I don't want to deal with this. Maybe if I wait/ignore it, it will just go away." So instead of going to the doctor for the stomach flu to have it checked out, Mom will decide to wait until 2 in the morning, decide she's dying/having an emergency, and instead go to the emergency room where $10,000 later - thank goodness for Medicare and insurance - it turns out to be something like the stomach flu. My grampa does the same kind of thing. He'll be having a problem and spend all day running around town with someone who could've taken him to the doctor's, but he'll ignore it and wait until - ironically 2 or 3 in the morning again - now he has to go to the emergency room because - big surprise - he got worse instead of better. In my Grampa's case it is usually something concerning, but he likely would've had much less of a problem if he hadn't waited until the last possible moment to do something about it. And they both generally think that when they do finally go to the hospital, that the hospital should be able to just magically make them better right away. Sadly this has happened multiple times with both of them.

AwesomO, my dad did something very similar.  It wasn't until he was under 100 lbs that he finally went to the hospital.  That's when they discovered he had stage 4 stomach cancer -- a tumor was taking up 75% of his stomach.  They gave him 4 months to live.

 

That was 10 years ago and I'm not sure he learned anything.  Except that he constantly tells everyone else to go to the hospital at the slightest sign of trouble.  He still likes to ignore until the last possible moment.

 

Meanwhile, I have most of the puzzle, just a small section that is frustrating me....
