I think Bonnet is being portrayed as the type of person that ‘would sell their own mother’ as the saying goes.  He’s the man who robbed the group that saved his life, killed one of them and then later knowingly raped their daughter.   Yes, he gave Brianna a gemstone - because he thought he would be dead soon.  If he managed to escape, he won’t have any warm and fuzzy thoughts about that baby.  Ransom  it back to Brianna - yes, that would probably be  his play.  However if another bidder showed up first, he’d go that route too.

The Iroquois included many converts among its population.  I'm not going to get into the details because a lot of this knowledge is fuzzy and in the deepest recesses of my brain, but Jesuit priests regularly lived among the various Iroquois nations and did convert people to Christianity.
