Vampirism In The Strain: No Sparkly Blood-Suckers Here

Funny that, just moments before the second season premier begins, they're finishing up a "Twilight" marathon!

"Blah!" indeed.

Screw it, though, as long as I'm here, I suppose it's as good a place as any to mention something I've found interesting about the show's vampers. I've been saying for years that we're evolving into a telepathic species. Not in the conventional psychic powers way, but in the artificial, technological, using tools to constantly communicate way. So what does a truly telepathic monster do first, in order to defeat us? It kills the internet and phones. Because it can communicate just fine without them.

Somebody help me out on this. Why can't they cross water again? We know they don't breathe, so drowning isn't an issue. Do the worms themselves drown? I assume it takes a lot of water exposure, otherwise the Master would be as scared of rain as he is of sunlight. So... couldn't Eichorst and Kelly just cover them up with plastic wrap and rubber bands, and they could walk under the river? Or, you know, use primitive boats. Is sneaking over there at night on a few tires or inflatable rafts really that difficult? I think maybe the Master should have recruited fewer beauticians and more u-boat specialists.

I dont know, it seems like the not crossing over water is the only connection to the supernatural origins of the other fictional vamps we all know and love. Even sunlight is not much of a thing as Kelly was able to be out driving in the daytime. Not crossing water is just a weird detail that doesnt really fit with all the other mythology the show has built up.

Del Toro and Hogan wrote the books with the idea of marrying folklore with science to explain the hows and whys.  In vampire folklore, water is often a natural barrier, with the vampire in question needing assistance in order to cross.  In this most recent episode we saw Eichorst arrange for passage across the water into Red Hook, even going so far as to insist that the boat owner be the one to transport them rather than just buy it outright and cross themselves.  This lets viewers know that piece of folklore is holding true for this particular vampire story.

Same with the dirt.  A lot of folklore has variations on vampires needing soil from their homeland in order to properly rest or travel.  Dracula's probably the most famous example (he lies in a coffin full of dirt from Transylvania while being transported to England) and most of the vampire stories that follow made a point to include something similar in homage to that story.

Yeah but like Cletus said, the dirt one can fairly easily find a plausible reason for, the not crossing water is just pretty blatantly supernatural. They are trying to have it both ways, vamps are natural...but not. I liked the books way better.

Something else I dont understand about this show is why would ANYBODY want to be a Strigoi? The vast majority of Strigoi are mindless, near zombie level creatures with no mind of their own. They look hideous, they act like retarded animals, they smell bad. In proper vampire stories, people WANT to be vampires because vamps are beautiful, they never age, they have fabulous life styles (never mind The Only Lovers Left Alive ) It makes sense that people would be willing to trade the sunlight for eternal life and blood sucking looks sexy as hell! (link NSFW but soooo hot!!!) I get that Palmer was a sickly, dying old man and he figures he'll end up like Eichorst but really....would anyone want to risk it?

All I know is, Palmer might now be having seconds thoughts about his wiener falling off.

This makes me wonder if Palmer really knows the full deal about becoming a strigoi.  Does he know what Eichorst really looks like?  Like you said, is he willing to sacrifice losing his manhood for immortality?  Hell as arrogant as he is, I can't imagine he would sacrifice his freewill (because even the sentient vamps are still subservient to the master) for immortality.

I haven't seen much of this show but from what I have seen came to this conclusion the vampires aren't vampires they are the worms who take over the body and force thier conscious on the person. Every time they change bodies they give the worms to the new body they need to sleep in dirt witch worms love. Think of them like the hunter worms from halo that explains why the master can control and see through everyone because the worms share a hive mind. Tell me what you think?
