Not in the 1950's. It's estimated that the apartment would have cost around $460,000 to buy then. Midge's family is well-off, but that would be out of their range; so we'll have to chalk it up to the old "willing suspension of disbelief".

I finally figured out about the brisket

Joel will always be given a bad time    if he was given a good time there would be no reason for Baz to get the brisket 

baz loves brisket so to keep it coming he always gives Joel an awful time.
