Yeah, this makes me wonder how long they had been planning Alex's anticipated (as of this writing) change in characterization.

It doesn't have to be a change in characterization. We never got any indication in the first season of Alex's orientation. She seemed kind of flirty with Lord but that could have been as much an act as possible interest. Even if she did have a line about having dated men in the past that doesn't mean she couldn't also be interested in women. Unless and until Alex herself stands up and on screen says "I am..." we can't know for sure, and it's made more variable by the possibility Alex herself may not know for sure.

Yeah the closest thing we really had to indication of her being interested in guys was the flashback when Alex got invited by the cute hot guy to the beach and wanted to hang with him rather than baby sit Kara, but anything that happens in middle school hardly sets things in stone.  

But honestly, her orientation matters a lot less to me than her character being kept consistently awesome and her relationships with Kara and J'onn not ignored.

I sometimes wish the show would go a bit darker with Alex. I don't mean make her into a villain or anything like that, or even really act differently than she does now but recognise that while she is a moral person and a good person she isn't a particularly ethical one. She's kicked and punched helpless prisoners, kidnapped people and physically assaulted coworkers and someday I'd like to see that pay off rather than a very occassional slap on the wrist from J'onn. There is a lot of story meat there if the show would be willing to go with it.
