S14.E08: Week 4

Recommended Posts

I always wonder why such a popular show is so desperate - needing to push Ore's frenetic kickathon (that occasionally seemed like a jive...just as he occasionally seemed to actually be dancing in sync with Joanne) as superior to Jay, who isn't even in this group, is shockingly desperate. He really must not be doing well in votes or mannequin Danny is far ahead of everyone else and they want to try to make it more even. I don't even think Jay's jive was his best dance, but I thought it was a lot better than what seemed like an extended series of leg spasms. I'm also not sure why they needed to act like being better than Jay was a feat when they spent the end of last year trying to downgrade him to help Kellie Bright. It's a little late now to hold him up to an ideal. They can compare Ore to Jay or to Jill or to anyone they want, but it won't make me feel anything when he and Joanne dance. I don't see any chemistry whatsoever.

Why is the show so patronizing toward Claudia and AJ? I feel sorry for them.

Why does "Judge Rinder" need to dance with his mouth wide open? Is this some sort of technique I don't know about? Does he have a medical condition?

Danny remains as boring as he was on Hollyoaks, but this was the first week I felt any spark or enjoyment with Oti or for a dance. So of course this was the week we were supposed to be dismayed and in awe of his new rival. Zzzz....

This must be the weakest female lineup the show has ever had, outside of Lesley Josephs. I'd actually rather keep Anastacia and Naga over the tedious Laura/Louise/Daisy trio - three grindingly mediocre nonentities.

Aljaz and Daisy must have watched this before that...erm...rumba. It's the last time I ever saw such a cringeworthy attempt at "sexiness." Sticking out your ass isn't sexy, it just means your ass is out.

I think so far the front runners have been relatively boring. Daisy and Louise are both too careful and are not really dynamic performers. I wouldn't be upset if they end up like Helen and Peter: early favorites who don't make the finals. Danny is slightly more engaging, but not much. His persona feels inauthentic.

I find Ore much more interesting. I agree that the show felt like they were pushing a narrative with him this week, but I don't know that it's anything new. Every season is always the best, most amazing ever. Claudia is also more interesting than the front runners. She just needs to commit more to every movement. I feel like she could have a real breakthrough later in the season.

I love Ed Balls. His samba was better than his paso but I would much rather see him stick around for a few more weeks than several better dancers. Katya is also doing an amazing job.

Lesley was shockingly good this week.

I actually prefer Ore's Jive to Jay's. I enjoyed watching it more and I thought he did a good job.

I guess that was my issue with it - I didn't really enjoy it at all. There was no real joy in it for me, or partnership. It was essentially frenzied kicking. I don't think Jay owns a patent on the jive (I think Scott Maslen's or Jill Halfpenny's may be the best), but Len needing to put it down to help Ore just reinforced Ore's flaws for me.

Apparently Brendan had a trip to A&E shortly before performing on Saturday - he has a severe chest infection (I noticed he was coughing a lot during the show) and has been unable to train all week. Gorka has stepped in to train with Anastacia and it isn't clear whether Brendan will be fit to perform next week.
