Pentatonix: Season 3 Champs

Recommended Posts

Just guesstimating from the sales figures for TCTM this past month, I think that it's probably around 1.7-1.8 million? It was at 1.1 million at the end of 2014, and has sold 140,000 for each of the past two weeks, plus another 100,000 the week before that. And I'm sure that at least a few rebels bought it outside of December! So, even if it doesn't get to 2X platinum this year, it definitely will next year.

As for Pentatonix, its first week sales were, what, 85,000? And it's probably averaged about 20,000-30,000/week after that for the past 5 weeks, so it's maybe around 250,000 by now? If so, it's halfway to a gold certification.

ETA: SrPab, where did you see the 400,000 sales figure? If that's correct, that's much better than I was guessing!

I based my numbers on "feel". As such, I feel better in saying TCTM has sold around 1.5M - 1.75M to-date. As for Pentatonix...it sold just under 100,000 units (i.e., pure sales plus streaming) in its debut week in mid-October.

All of my touchy-feely numbers are predicated on physical CD sales and paid downloads + streaming equivalents. I may have guesstimated more optimistically for Pentatonix. But then again, my gut also tells me a TCTM halo effect could have spurred additional sales of their other albums--especially since others have reported that some/all of their EPs and albums charted back into BB200 and the iTunes main U.S. chart.

Okay, from what i've seen (I didn't see it on the day but today via YouTube), the New Year's Day song wasn't even performed on the Seacrest New Year's Show. Wow. Missed opportunity. I don't get it in the least.  You have a song about New Years. On a show about New Years. Airing on New Years... and at least pretending hard it was being done on New Years (even if apparently those LA remotes weren't). And someone (to be fair we don't know if it was on PTXs end or the producers) decides they shouldn't do that song. Weird. Unless they just haven't rehearsed the song live enough (since you know... it's probably only applicable to sing at all from lets say Christmas Day to Jan 1).

What got done were admittedly mediocre (for PTX) performances of Can't Sleep Love and Cracked. The noise level was just too brutal in that venue for those performances to be anything else but mediocre.

Honestly, even though the live version of CSL IS typically better than the recorded one, I still really am sick of seeing them do it live now.

That's a great song, SrPab--thanks!!

Chart update (sorry for the delay, I was on vacation in Florida until last night):

Top 200 Albums:

TCTM: #23 (#4 last week)

Pentatonix: #31 (#13)

Holiday charts are done until the end of the year. Pentatonix didn't drop nearly as badly as I feared it would--#31 is quite respectable, IMO! Next week should be interesting to see where it ends up.

I keep forgetting that Pentatonix literally came out 2 months ago. They're still promo-ing CSL and it's still hanging around on radio. Like all the performers on the NYE show, it was just another promotional gig.

Oh and ICYMI: Pentatonix made into Forbe's 2016 30 Under 30. Another for the record books, 1st a cappella act on the list.

+ Forbes Q&A with PTX. Some interesting facts you might not know about them. Although the question about college debt was weird. Why would you need to know that?

Happy New Year!

For those of us who can't see the Forbes article because we won't turn off our ad-blockers, would someone please explain what 30 under 30 means?

Straight from Forbes. "Presenting the Class of 2016: 600 of the brightest young entrepreneurs, breakout talents and change agents in 20 different sectors."

Amazing achievements, you've probably used one of their services.

Achievement unlocked for Kevin.

"I will never get over this. This is something I've dreamt about since college. Thank you @Forbes!"

Thanks Sharpie66 and ptxnewsandstuff. Kevin knew about this list in college??? I am feeling terribly outclassed.

He was in grad school, so college isn't that many years out for him.

And actually that list has been "famous" for quite some time. I can't put an exact number to it but I recall hearing about it at least a decade ago.

And really sometimes you get on it because of a right time/right place thing. Daisy Ridley and John Boyega are both on this year's list and if you really look at what they did, all it was is to act in one particular movie. Business-wise all they did was manage to get cast (this isn't to derive the job they did or anything like that--I'm just saying one route to get on the list is less about movers and shakers and more about a sudden rise in fame).

Tweeted about tickets to a special taping a couple weeks ago about Disneyland's 60th Anniversary special, some fans got tickets and it looks awesome. It will air on ABC, Feb 21st. There's a snippet of PTX singing "Be Our Guest" and them skipping down the strip amongst all the floats. Looks like a whole lot of fun.

I've read some bits and pieces regarding RCA's intention to make PTX blow up globally. They'll be touring again this year, and I really do think they'll have concerts in countries they've never performed in.

I'm curious if it will be a full-fledged "world tour" -- something that spans 9-10 months of the year. Will they stop anywhere in Latin America (I think, yes)? Will they have concerts in Adelaide and Perth, Australia, besides revisiting Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne (perhaps)? Will they have stops in New Zealand (I'm unsure)? Is South Africa on their radar?

For that matter, are there any rumors about them having concerts in any of the Scandinavian countries (I know they've played in Copenhagen, Denmark), or the Baltic, or Russia? They've never had a concert stop in mainland China, Hong Kong or Taiwan.

Those were early in their careers. I would love to see what kind of audience they could pull now.

BTW, I had gotten away from watching PTX reaction vids on YT some time ago, but I just discovered this older guy who calls himself NearlySeniorCitizen who has become a huuuuge PTX fan through his reaction videos. His first one is Evolution of Music, and he watched it due to a rec from a viewer. He starts out saying, "I don't know what a Pentatonix is, but here goes!" then when they start, he's "Oh, it's a Capella!" and enjoys it a lot. What cracked me up was on his second vid, for the Michael Jackson video, when he says, "This would be perfect for me to smoke my pot to..."

Billboard's got a write-up on the new album coming out from TRIPTYQ, Kevin's other side project, including a sneak preview of their new video, "Murphy". I like this song more than the last one, and the video is gorgeous! http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6851529/kevin-olusola-triptyq-antoinette-costa-tara-kamangar-murphy-video-exclusive

"...but Sony got a surprising lift from Pentatonix, who sold another million-plus following 2014’s 2 million-plus to establish a bona fide franchise—and they pulled it off without a radio hit, a rarity in today’s music business." - Hits Daily Double

Bunch of numbers & analysing but PTX, a very rare feat. Could we call them a franchise yet though? Know that their main goal for this year is to get a hit song, lets see what they can pull off this year.

Great Scott! -- ever the delusional optimist with his tweet recognizing 10,000,000 million subs! Hee, VidStatsX shows it as a rounding error for Top 100 Most Subscribed YT Music Channels ;-)

Those numbers have already changed (both on the actual channel and the page you linked to).

BTW: I am kind of shocked that Skrillex is the #8 most subscribed channel, and had never even HEARD of Spinnin' Records (#7) before today.

That last shows that as much as we act like the US is the whole world.. it's not. If you sort by most views and look at their videos, Spinnin' Records seems to be Eurotrash videoes.

When I Fall video is on YouTube:

Kevin's rap in the middle of the song is very self-referential, and an interesting take on where he is at in his life right now:

You're having visceral reactions to my poison being

This triptyq love just rushing through your heart IV

Another show, another city

Your rhythm hollow feeling empty???

Stranded

Feel this void without my queen

Mark my words PTX on the grind

Caught up with all these world tours

But that fame goes

You’re my Julie-O

Round and around I fall for you

Even though that your "ai" will "bu xia qu" (Chinese for your love will not continue)

If you are in the ring for another round let me know

We’ll call that a K.O.

Additionally, Pentatonix got the RIAA (U.S.) Gold album certification one year to the date of their Grammy win. An album of (mostly) original a cappella music selling 500,000 units + streaming equivalents in less than four months--how about that!

ETA: There are tweets floating about that their special guest for the upcoming tour is Us The Duo. I don't know if that means Us The Duo will open for them at every tour stop, or just select dates (perhaps only for U.S./Canada dates).
