Pentatonix: Season 3 Champs

Recommended Posts

Speaking only for myself, I'm feeling good about things because non-Christmas PTX music is getting regular airplay on a number of large-market U.S. radio stations. The online chatter I've seen has me persuaded, if not outright convinced, that CSL is generally well-received--which I hope leads to great things for the album.

I don't know how many more adds RCA has lined up, but this is the most radio time PTX has ever received.

On a different note, yesterday I posted a YT link in the Small Talk thread about a new BBC2 show called The Naked Choir With Gareth Malone. There is a PTX tie-in, of sorts. At around the 10:40 mark of the premiere episode, they've spliced in footage from PTX's London concert (presumably) as part of a montage accompanying a voice-over of Gareth giving a brief but incomplete history of a cappella music. The audio throughout the episode is, I think, deliberately distorted--everyone sounds like a Chipmunk.

They uploaded their "Where Are U Now" cover!

http://youtu.be/eMrh3wYb1mM

One of the commenters brought up or mentioned an odd wording in the description box. The addition of the words "performed by", which was not usually present in any of PTX's videos. It made the commenter think that Pentatonix did not arrange it fully, just cursorily, if any.

Then another commenter said something about Imogen Heap, and suddenly I remembered an old Kevin interview:

http://m.startribune.com/variety/320286611.html

He mentioned that he (and PTX) admires Ember Island's cover of WhereAre U Now because it reminds him of........ yep. Imogen Heap.

This is Ember Island's version:

http://youtu.be/YmLXmN9ItR8

In that video, a commenter from 2 months ago mentioned that Scott played a snippet of EI's version in his Snapchat. So the teaser has been around for a while! (Scott in July; Kevin in August)....

The "performed by" tag conundrum, it seems, is half solved. The first half (third?) of PTX's cover is indeed a reperformance of EI's artangement, but the last half is all PTX.

Good mashup of styles!

Is this what they call a "remix"?

I love it. But I love CSL more actually.

I wonder if a lawyer (or 10) had a say in this: SKRILLEX AND DIPLO PRESENT JACK Ü COVER OF “WHERE ARE Ü NOW” FT. JUSTIN BIEBER PERFORMED BY PENTATONIX

Wikipedia says that the Skrillex and Diplo collab album's title is Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack Ü. I always like to look in the description box for any interesting tidbits--and reading this for the first time confused me.

I think it is a good move for them to release another cover before album drop because, like them or not, many people (especially young'uns) know who Bieber and Skrillex are. I've heard of Diplo--but that's only because he was featured in a Blackberry tv ad dj'ing at various raves. And I think he and Katy Perry may have had a thing at one point. Oh...Diplo also produced Usher's song Climax.

I've never heard the Skrillex/Diplo original (nor Bieber's piano ballad of it, which seemed to be the inspiration). As usual, I prefer the noises PTX makes. But I'm with debbydeb and the CSL love. I will add, though, that I like PTX's EDM-esque approximations in Where Are Ü Now.

Dear fellow boarders who know about this stuff:

Can I unclench and uncross fingers and toes about getting radio airplay now?  Did RCA  do an adequate job (sorry, but no love or trust for The Man)?  Are we okay or getting there?

It was most added on impact week. Personally have heard it a couple times on Z100 but it's not on high rotation whereas SiriusXM Hits 1 plays it constantly. Depends on the station, they're still adding, now they just have to play it. Slowly climbing the charts. RCA is doing their bit, think PTX just needs to go out there and perform it. Heard chatter that they might be on Jimmy Fallon. Album is 3 weeks-ish away, promo might just ramp up.

Really like their take on 'Where Are Ü Now.' Both versions are great but PTX's slower, moody version evokes emotion. Press loves it, lots more coverage than usual.

I freaking LOVE it........and they all look amazing.  Give the stylist a raise.

Seconding the LOVE for Where Are U Now!  I much prefer its sound to CSL or Cheerleader, although PTX nearly can do no wrong.  (I think my least favorite are the Gotye and the Say Something songs.)  I also think the direction and look of their videos (however familiar it is to see them apart and then together) is fabulous.  So effective, and a signature style.  Whoever has been doing their videos since Little Drummer Boy gets a standing ovation from me.

Can't wait, can't wait for the album.  I'm thinking about wearing my t-shirt to work on 10:16.

Interesting thing I noted. Doing a random search just of the term "Pentatonix" on YouTube for videos posted over the past week I noticed a pattern I've actually vague noticed before. A TON of the reaction videos for PTX out there are from Black Youtubers. It's an interesting thing to think about if this isn't just a weird random search anomaly (again, I've noticed it before--this time it actually just registered consciously).

Given the kind of music PTX is often covering I suppose it makes sense though. It makes me wonder if a loyalty to them has built up in that market.

Or perhaps Black Youtubers (I'm using this term instead of African-Americans because I've heard a few English and Island accents) simply love making reaction videos overall?

I find myself wondering what they're doing with all the unexpected time off they're getting (now Kelly not only has her US shows canceled, but also the overseas shows PTX was also supposed to be part of).

I'm glad for them though--even as painfully young (thus resilient) as they are, I think ultimately a rest is what they needed too.

I've seen a Superfruit or two pop up, but otherwise they seem to be really quiet--other than all of the tweets about their new album, and Kirstie has been keeping up her blog--where she reveals she's been in LA spending too much money shopping, and going to Vegas on an impromptu trip with friends, spending too much money. Her site is really annoyingly constructed though--the girl needs a webmaster more concerned with function over flashiness.

Kevin put out a video this week too:

EDIT - And I just saw the Periscopes that both Kevin and Kirstie have done lately. MAN I hate that format though. SO annoying to try and watch.

Funny you mentioned that...earlier this week, Kirstie tweeted that she was looking for a web designer.

Periscope's vertical vid capture <<<

I think this unexpected downtime is good for them, too. October could be an extremely busy month for them.

YT reactors: I believe this reinforces the demographics of the fanbase. I don't know that all of these reactors are actual fans or not, but I think a few of them have become fans simply by watching/reacting to PTX vid after PTX vid. I haven't done any "research" but it also seems like some of the reactors are of the gaming world. Not only in the sense that they play video games but that they also put up reaction videos to games/other gamers. So for some of them to catch the PTX bug is interesting (i.e. men under 30).

Superfruit is doing their bit for brand loyalty. Many of the reactors (after a few videos) know the group's names. The Empire Medley got more reactions than I thought it would.

By the by, Avi tweeted that this weekend he would be starting something called #SamsonProject. At one time, his parents considered naming him Samson. Some people think this project may have to do with his hair but others (like me) think it may be a solo or collab EP of folk music.

I was being a 'masochist' and reading all of the comments on WAUN (or, at least until Youtube says "okay you can't press 'Load More Comments'")

And a lot of people were saying that PTX was using "autotune" for the first half of WAUN. I guess, they just don't know the difference between Autotune and Vocoder?

I had a chat with my brother about PTX's WAUN and he said something that made me go WOW PTX is crazy but okay.

Anyway, the original Ember Island cover of WAUN I think does use vocoder, but I think PTX chooses to "perform" EI's arrangement to challenge themselves. Can we really sound like a vocoder.

A long time ago, they're accused of doing the same thing with Daft Punk (using autotones and effects other than standard reverb), and they say that they're flattered that people think that PTX uses computer effects. I think they'll say the same thing to those people who say that PTX uses vocoder for WAUN, when in fact it's just some amazingly tight 5-part harmony.

That being said, I'm looking forward to seeing them perform WAUN live.

I've seen some CSL live vids, and I think the live version is better than the radio version.

I wonder if they're going to do CSL with the Rap (Tink's) part when they go on tour next? I think Mitch will really enjoy rapping it.

These crazy kids. And Kevin's beatboxing is getting really great, while still retaining the 'human' feel to his sounds.

Looks like PTX will be performing at a few of those end-of-year holiday radio concert circuit /stuff.

They've been listed at two so far:

This link came up on my timeline:

I've never heard of this mix before and I've never seen anyone promote it. And judging from the commenters, many were surprised too.

Does anyone know why this one is not promoted, and why PTX is not mentioned in the list of singers credit? It's not like you can't tell it's them! I mean they are not JUST any background singers.

This is yet another oddly worded song credit. Only this time, the complete omission of their involvement. We live in strange PTX times.

I get that Drake and Rihanna are much bigger stars, but PTX seem to be "on" much more of that song--than RiRi at least.

That's an official channel too, so it's not like it's some random Youtuber forgetting them in a title.  They're not mentioned on the official site for the game either: http://games.disney.com/fantasia-video-game

It was mentioned briefly in one of the earlier spreecasts when someone just discovered it and they weren't that enthusiastic about it, just said it was cool. The game flopped but they are definitely credited in the game. It's in the bottom right hand corner when you start playing. There are 14 versions of this. They range from the full band to just the trio, Avi & Kevin by themselves or together.

You may know him, fellow Pentaholic, Hassan, has compiled them into a neat list for us - http://theworldofha.com/2015/07/25/take-care-pentatonix-vocal-mix-compilation/

  • Love 2

Geez, how does this Hassan guy have time for all of this (remember, he makes these super long reaction videos constantly too--which, I'm sorry, I'm never really able to sit through)?

Speaking of people going to extremes with Reaction videos... here are odd ones. One guy has gone SO far down the list of PTX material, he's down to "Evolution of Lucky Charms (feat. Pentatonix) Reaction!" and "Pentatonix - Oreo's "Wonderfilled" Song - Reaction!"

Thanks for the headsup! Wow!! 14 versions. That's quite the effort. And to look for all the versions, that's quite the dedication! A true blue Pentaholic :)

Looking at the video again, I found the credit you mentioned. On my screen it was covered by the volume slider! And since it was loading in low bandwidth (ah my bane of existence) the words weren't rendered legibly. But now I'm purposefully looking for it, definitely saq ut! That's why I missed it at first. I'm beginning to wonder whether I need my prescription specs recheckes :)

Thanks so much! You're a gem!

I can't say I'm all that excited by that result. It's half-baked (because I doubt it's a song they'd choose themselves--its WAAAAAY to "Glee"). Who knows if it's even their arrangement (unless you've seen the album credits)?

I doubt they're allowed to deviate much from the "official arrangement" as it was to be spliced with other groups' songs? (the medley thing?) I heard they were given it on the day of the shoot. Maybe they're only allowed a smaaaalll leeway.

http://www.allmusic.com/album/pitch-perfect-2-original-motion-picture-soundtrack-mw0002839515

In here, they're only credited as "vocals".

Sing!

This is cool incorporating fans into their video. The peeps on Twitter are confused as to why only those living in the US/UK/CAN are allowed to submit videos. Understand the branding, age restrictions etc but they have thousands of fans overseas. Either they don't want too many videos to sift through or there is some weird legal thing.

More info - http://smarturl.it/PTXVideoSubmit

Edit: If anyone happens to be in NY (Times Square), Scott's there until 9:30pm filming and wants some fans to come down and be a part of the video. Probably too late but this sounds like a very fun video.

Edited by ptxnewsandstuff

It wouldn't be any kind of weird legal thing, but a fairly understandable one. I'm sure the US, UK and Canada all either have reciprocal agreements already in place for copyright, or simply have contract law similar enough that they don't have to rewrite it. Compare it to the European countries, where they probably agree on very little legally.

Given that it's a Sony label, I'm shocked Japan isn't included in this (they have a gigantic PTX fanbase too). And possibly Korea.

Since RCA is a part of Sony...and since Sony HQ is in Japan...and since Japan is, I think, still the world's second-largest music market--then I believe a number of the promo/marketing moves are coming from up high. The individual members of PTX may not have known, at the outset, that Pentatonix would have several album versions (regular all-original, Deluxe, Target Exclusive, Japan Exclusive + OMWH Documentary, ???). I believe RCA/Sony has some say regarding which songs are on which album version. But, is this a relic from the past?

I've seen online chatter from fans upset about the different album versions and how they're spending too much money on merch. To which I say: You are not a bad fan if you don't buy everything they're selling. Conversely, PTX may not be the bad guy to direct one's ire at. I don't understand the strategy behind multiple album versions that leaves some people with FOMO. Creating FOMO is not the intent of PTX or RCA/Sony, right? Does Sony Music Japan simply want to do something nice for Japanese Pentaholics--but are ignorant with how fans in not-Japan would take the news?

Pivot: I agree that fan participation for the Sing video would come with a lot of legalese. Perhaps limiting submissions to select English-speaking countries was for reasons beyond the copyright laws of any given country. Practically speaking, would I want to be subjected to lots of questionable "singing" juxtaposed with PTX's vocals? Maybe they'll (RCA people or video director/editor...as I have doubts that Scott, Mitch, Kirstie, Avi, and Kevin have the time to listen to all of the submissions) just incorporate bits with fans lip-synching?

I just think going through all the submissions and making decisions on what to use will not be tasks solely for PTX.

OMG. Had this long though-out post and the forum timed out when I went to post it. Rookie mistake. Prepare for some incoherent babbling. It's going to be a stream of thoughts. Sorry if it doesn't make any sense.

Every time someone mentions about how they're a bad fan or how somethings are unfair. It drives me insane. You are not a bad fan if you can' afford some of these things. You're still watching their videos. spreading the word about them etc. How does that make you a bad fan? Pretty sure they'll be happy if you enjoy their music. Money brings so much drama. So many petty arguments online especially about Patreon and their clothing. Does it matter if you see their video 12 hrs later? You'll see it along with the rest of the world. The spreecasts are done every month, some artists don't even have livestreams unless its a special occasion or for some media thing. Some patrons are nice enough to upload them for those who can't watch it. PTX can spend whatever they want on their clothing if it makes them happy. Just looking at them now, they're more confident and have found their style. If some offers to buy a song/album/doco, which is the best thing about this fanbase, be happy about it. Stop being so negative. It was embarrassing when Jeremy offered to buy a fan CSL but he/she went on and on about how he knows he/she is a terrible fan. Why would someone say PTX doesn't care about their fans just because they don't get some special edition. They care. These special international editions are for the fans overseas who don't get the special perks that we do here in the US. PTX also tours a lot in the US whereas they can't go to every city in the world in a year. Hypocritical when you complain how the Shazam/Skype contest isn't available to international fans and then complain that they get 'everything.' Just be happy for them! People need to also stop complaining about how they aren't getting 'noticed' by them. They see you, they don't have time to respond to everybody. The PTX crew are pretty open online and interact with the fans a lot. As their fanbase gets bigger, hope people don't start sending dumb and stupid things as seen with other artists. Be nice and just be happy for their success people!

(Rant over. Sorry again. Needed to put the words somewhere. Been avoiding all this drama on Twitter. It goes in circles.)

Labels have been doing this with other artists ever since the digital market popped up. Sadly, it's a marketing ploy to bring in the $$$. With the various versions here in the US, dedicated fans will be buying. There's only 3 versions here right? Normal, Deluxe & Target. It can also gauge the digital and physical copies sold but that's pretty much useless nowadays. The international versions are nice for those fans. Happy for them, especially with some friends overseas who have never seen PTX. If you can't hear one of the exclusive songs, it's bound to end up online somewhere.

Less than  two weeks until the album drop and I have resolved to avoid Twitter and Tumblr. Over the weekend, I noticed an increased amount of either a level of annoyance and/or self-loathing as mentioned by @SrPab and @ptxnewsandstuff. It's just unnecessary drama, imho.

I'm not going to comment about the various contests or projects being held for North America/Europe fans, as it is understandable for various reasons, but I for one welcomes the International deluxe version which includes the Documentary DVD.

When they first announced that the project was going to be published via Vimeo, my hopes fell, because Vimeo was blocked in my country. I could install a proxy, but since the most reliable internet connection was at work, obviously I didn't have the requisite admin permissions to install proxy servers, etc. So in the early days of the doco-drop, I could only 'live vicariously' through twitter and Tumblr chatter. Much later, I did have a "watch together" session thanks to a Pentaholic in my city who could get it, but I wanted a copy for myself which I could get legally (let's just call it 'supporting the artist'). And even though I'm not in Japan, I hope that they would do the same in my country. Or if not, thankfully for me personally it's easier to get stuff from Japan than from the US.

And Japan always have something 'extra' in their album. Such as the Japan-only Christmas track; the early inclusion of Let It Go (an understandable commercial move on everybody's part, as Frozen was HUGE in Japan).

So, perhaps, what I'm saying is that N.A/European audience shouldn't be too agitated about the stuff appearing in International versions, because sooner or later it would make its way to N.A. and Europe. But the same could not be said for the other way around (from N.A/Europe to Asia/Australia/South America, etc).

For instance, during their world tour, I was surprised that there were no proper VIP and/or Meet and Greets in most South East Asian countries (although a lot of the fan's outrage were directed to the promoters, not PTX thankfully), I read somewhere that they initially promised something for Asian Patreons, but that never materialized (again, the promoters get blamed for it), and of course no State Fairs, no parades, and nothing that can give them access to PTX outside of concerts.

ETA PS: Actually I'm not being fair by lumping the whole European continent together as "Europe".

Because as we know... Germany and FEMA, and many other European countries having trouble even accessing PTX on Youtube (!)

(I don't even know what I'm talking about now. Sorry for the incoherence. Just throwing my two pennies into the hat).

Scott tweeted over the weekend that he was in a restaurant and heard CSL on the music being played there, and he completely plotzed.

RCA doing their bit. It's climbing and stations are still adding the song. Cracking into the top 50 on Pop radio is awesome.

PTX will be on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."

Thursday Night (10/15). Day before album releases. Cool late night host. They're listed as the musical guest so no interviews and all that stuff. Tom Hanks and Jessica Chastain are the guests for that evening.

Also, that article/interview thing was epic. Lots of insight. "Everyday was like a blind date."

They'll also be on the Oct. 20 airing of the Today show, per this Headline Planet article (performances + interview/chat).

It appears that PTX will close the Fallon episode. I wonder if Tom Hanks will remember them.

Tom's wife Rita is a fan supposedly. So the real question might be if he mentions that more than if he remembers, I think.

They're years off from having a talking segment on a major American talk show (if ever). I mean even the most super-successful groups only get their frontmen interviewed anyway, and PTX doesn't have one.

Perks of being a solo artist. Gomez, the night before gets a double feature. Hope Jimmy takes the chance to do something fun with them. They're A Cappella and he's done a lot of viral fun stuff. Probably won't but it's there for the taking.

That track by track commentary on Vimeo. Think it's not suppose to be public. The audio is terrible for a professional film company, hasn't been cleaned. Really cool insight into their whole process and the meanings behind the songs.

The frenzy of social media I followed is crazy :)

Suddenly there's soon-tags EVERYWHERE. I have half a mind to just avoid my twitter feed. i didn't realize before how many pentaholics are there amongst my own friends (not to mention the pentaholics that I followed but not necessarily in my circle of friends).

The interviews are cute. (I'm guessing the link is the same as this one on Youtube? (Am still not able to access Vimeo *kicks government*))

Btw, also cute when they have short EPs, abbreviated albums, they have abbreviated names PTX. vol 1, 2, 3.

and now they have full length album, they have full length name Pentatonix. ;)

I don't know if this is their intention when they first released the EP on Madison Gate. But it's a funny coincidence.

Knew those videos weren't meant to be public. They've gone private on Vimeo.

In other news, there's a vinyl version of the album available only on Amazon

I'm not being rhetorical but...what does the worldwide Sony/ATV publishing deal mean? Can PTX's original music be used in movies or tv shows? Could it mean the Daft Punk medley doesn't have as many hurdles to clear to be used in movies or tv? Is my thinking too narrow?

Publishing Deal is a big deal. All the record label does is help with the recording, production, distribution & marketing etc. When they signed to RCA they probably signed to its affiliate publishing company.

A publisher acts on behalf of the artist to collect royalties (anything that involves commercial gain). This deal is just awesome for PTX. Sony/ATV can get people to play their songs on commercials or wherever. They get more $$$ as well. RCA probably has a large cut, PTX will get a bit more with Sony publishing. It's also like backup. Ensures that even if RCA doesn't help for whatever reason with recording and releasing, Sony will (b/c $$$).

Publishing deal also means that all the "100" or so songs they wrote that didn't end on the album. Sony can give to other artists and if it ends up on anyone's album they'll be credited and given the $$$.

Just think of it as if PTX music plays anywhere. They will get the $$$ along with Sony.

Watch the reaction numbers dwindle. Copyright just made it so much more difficult. Heard that some reactions have already been pulled. Crazy.
