Pentatonix: Season 3 Champs

Recommended Posts

Hmm.  Not a fan of Kevin's completely different look.  Also, Scott's hair immediately makes me think of Alfalfa.  From the old Little Rascals.  Avi and Kirsti look great.  Mitch ... I guess the razor cutting on the end of his bangs are an improvement?

Pretty excited about the new album, though.  I was just thinking of giving the Christmas one a rest.

Agree in that I am not a fan of Scott's hair.  Could not agree less about Kevin's look (in a word...........woof). Kirstie looks fabulous as usual and like Mitch's haircut(?) but not in love with Avi's more tailored, fitted style.  I mourn The Lumberjack.

I know they'll be selling CDs, too, #soon...but I've read some online chatter about there being a Target stores exclusive with a live version of Aha!, a live version of Problem--plus To The River, an original song that didn't make into the Pentatonix or Pentatonix Deluxe Edition albums.

Fanjoy.co is selling an exclusive box set (option to exclude album; asks for shirt size) that has: album (if you want it included), shirt, letter from PTX, other surprises closer to album release date. Also, first 500 to buy get an autographed CD--but I think that ship has already sailed. The packaging (the box itself) is nice.

Someone must have nudged YouTube on this to keep an accurate Day 1 hit count (it's often not), because 406,522 hits (as I post this) for a video posted 11 hours ago sounds about right.

I'm mixed on this. It's pretty good--definitely the best original they've done. It's CLOSER to the "radio formula" too. But I don't know if it's fully there, and if I'm being honest I'm not 100% sold on Mitch's part (the through the megaphone sounding echoey bit he does). I'd love to be wrong and for this to be a radio-played big hit, but I'm skeptical. At the very least let's see if traditional media actually PLAYS it or not.

The MAIN vocal (Scott's) is very traditional R&Bish--which is probably a good thing. That'll help.

I'm trying to decide if I really hear a "hook" in this or not.  Nothing that strikes me on the first few listens, but sometimes it takes longer.

Going by online chatter, I get the sense that those "Uh-huh"s and "Yeah"s--distorted or not--are well-liked by a lot of people (at least among core fans). I also believe those distortions were one of the things done to make the song more radio-friendly.

Hooks or not, what I love about the song is its throwback vibe. Younger fans may go for certain effects, while people in other age brackets (such as the over-40 set) may latch onto it due to nostalgia.

I'm guardedly optimistic when it comes to RCA's promo push in the run-up to Oct. 16.

The fact that half of those uh-huh/yeahs are actually Scott doing it didn't occur to me until now (I just replayed it). Which of course means that live versions definitely won't do the same (since he can't be singing lead and doing that at the same time).

I don't want to harp on hooks, but honestly as much as hardcore fans can be dedicated to songs without them, the mainstream doesn't exist without them. On further replay I'm supposing the main hook is supposed to be as simple as the actual lyrics that are the song title, but the problem is that it's immersed inside so much other sound that it may not be standing out to listeners.  The very thing that makes listening to PTX cool on one level (the layering of vocal tricks) can also on occasion drown out individual lyrics.

We shall see. It's almost a shame they're so tied up with Kelly Clarkson now, because I'm betting that means the record company is going to have trouble scheduling national TV appearances for them (vs. local ones, which they often have).  Better if they were back in California for a few weeks able to go on the nighttime shows there (plus the one big daytime show, Ellen), or in NY to try a few of the daytime and nightime shows there. At the very least in their non-existent time not prepping for each Kelly show, I hope they've at least got the energy to hit a radio station or two in each city they go to over the next few months.

Can anybody tell me who wrote "Can't Sleep Love"?

From the fact that they've been talking up the fact that they intended to write these originals, one would assume Pentatonix did.

That said, I'm sure they've had co-authors/collaberators on some of these songs.  And to be honest, plenty of good artists only sing songs someone else wrote for them (even if they're originals and not covers). We could call that the "most of Motown's artists never wrote a song in their life" rule.

So I hope they've gone to some hitmakers out there for at least one or two of the songs on this album

I showed the video to my sister who's not really into PTX (other than their Christmas album which she LOVES--my copy keeps disappearing from my house basically)... and she like it. Actually listened to it about 3x before commenting.

She said it reminds her of Kanye West's Bound song (the one with Kim Kardashian on a motorbike)

According to the metadata in my download of the song from when I pre-ordered the album, composer credits go to: Kevin Figueiredo, Elof Loelv, Pentatonix & Teddy Pena. I think Figueiredo, Loelv, and Pena are in RCA's songwriter stable.

There's been some more online chatter about people hearing CSL on their local (terrestrial) radio stations, Spotify, and satellite radio. I don't know if RCA will pony up $$ to be a sponsored advertiser to get CSL into heavy rotation.

Back to Kromm's thought above about exposure for CSL and the album while PTX is touring...they'll have about a month from end of tour (9/20) to 10/16. If they are already booked for appearances on any late night shows or The Ellen Show to air during that timeframe, I'm not aware of it.

Just thought of something else...anyone know what their Christmas plans are--will they release a 4- or 6-song EP? Or will they release just one or two holiday singles? Or will they release nothing because album/CSL promo takes precedence? I think they may put out one Christmas song cover. If they appear on any NYE televised specials, I also think they'll perform one or two songs from Pentatonix.

it's a weird group. Kevin Figueiredo is a rock drummer (unless there are two people with that same odd name in the same business):

http://www.moderndrummer.com/site/2010/08/kevin-figueiredo/

Teddy Pena seems to be this guy:

And Elof Loelv...:

http://www.allmusic.com/artist/elof-loelv-mn0002436841

Loelv seems to be the only experienced composer among those three (although most of that being for Icona Pop doesn't exactly recommend him as a hitmaker, since... they've only had one hit).

I hope they put out at least an EP to build on the tremendous interest and momentum they have from TCTM album.  It should be relatively easy for them as people would be satisfied with traditional songs, so most of their energy would be expended in the arranging.  In my ideal world, Pentatonix would give a series of christmas concerts in relative small concert halls with excellent acoustics, so that they could do at least a few songs off-mic.  That would be a real Christmas present to the fans of the Pentatonix sound.  It's obviously a pipe dream as they can fill much larger spaces now.

Pentatonix is doing Can't Sleep Love and Cheerleader in their set with the Kelly Clarkson tour now.  Can't Sleep Love was well done, Cheerleader was pretty rough.  It's always mind-boggling to see/hear them live, and Mitch, especially, was delivering with lots of power.  He doesn't project the happiness that was so clear in the early days, though.  I don't know what is wrong.

They got a HUGE welcome and response from Nashville, and their I'm On My Way song sing-a-long sounded awesome.  Those Music City people can sing!

I am kicking myself across the country that I didn't see them for their first tour.  I would love to hear them in a small venue.

"Somebody wake up my heart, light me up, set fire to my soul...."

It has been a crazy few days on Twitter land. Always nice to see other artists supporting one another. Meghan Trainor has taken it to another level, non-stop promo for #CantSleepLove.

With the industry setting the global release day on Friday now, have to wait until Monday rolls around to see how CSL does on radio. People seem to be loving it so far, very surprised by the amount of views and likes the video has received since it is an original song. Nice lead single, simple, catchy and is obviously tailored for the radio. Welcome new Pentaholics! Very excited for the rest of the album. Wonder if they are releasing another single before the album comes out. 'OMWH' is still my favorite. Pretty sure that's going to change soon.

Also, I recall Kevin saying that Elof wrote and produced Rhianna's "Stay" in the latest livestream.

Hooray for 20 songs?! (Still mad that they chucked 'Cheerleader' onto the album.)

Oh! Those who had private performance in Nashville got to hear "Take Me Home." Obviously they couldn't record it but apparently they were taken to the showers and PTX started singing it. There were tears. 'Take Me Home' was referenced at the end of the documentary when they finished their last show in Texas. Sneaky PTX. Sneaky.

Article just came out that says RCA will begin pushing CSL. - http://hitsdailydouble.com/pop_mart&id=297611

A radio station (Z102.9) played it for the first time and asked people to rate it via Twitter, Facebook, calling in etc. (9.5/10) The surprise was that they played the Tink version. Fans rallied on Twitter to get it played again, they did and I recorded it. (Link is private and we might change the private link, depends on what they play on radio.)  https://soundcloud.com/ptxnewsandstuff/csl-feat-tink/s-I6L1s

The rap is pretty chill.

Wow. Listening it in the context of a radio show, with the Rap... wish they did release it in the original date (Sprig 2015) because CSL is a summer drive music, with the top down, just cruising along the boulevard into the late sunset in the early summer breeze... hahaha. It's just what I imagine.

Love that there's no shouty bits in the song. Just a smooth 90s vibe etc. Funny thing I had it on a four-song playlist loop on youtube. CSL comes right after evolution of MJ on my loop and I'm just amazed at the similar vibe (in terms of sound trend). Very nineties.

That's a shame and hopefully it will fix things up for her, and also give Pentatonix the rest THEY need too.

BTW: anyone else not at all surprised that new views on the Can't Sleep Love video have pretty much vaporized? It was always going to be a tough sell. They BADLY need a major collaboration with someone for their next original song released (and video). If that wasn't planned all along for this album, they're gonna have some real problems, IMO, however much their existing fans continue to love it all.

Also, Cheerleader, same venue:

I'm not so surprised as well, they haven't been doing a lot of media around CSL.

It lags badly behind Love Again which is at 31 million+ views since May last year. I remember Love Again got a lot of promo (tv interviews, radio interviews, youtube/yahoo channel push) where they sing L.A. almost everywhere they go.

They did the same with their cover of Problem last year. Now with their summer dedicated to KC touring they weren't doing so many media blitz.

I guess this time round they're concentrating on getting "Arena" ready?

The music video director of PTX's CSL is the same as the one who did KC's Invincible. I guess because they share the same record company.

This is what the Director has to say about the shoot:

You should know by now that I LOVE stylized color palates and quirky set design. In this case, patterns on patterns. The concept evolved from an idea the band had that was inspired by their single artwork. I took their original idea and, as usual, made it as overly complicated as it can be. This is was a lot of fun to design and shoot. The most challenging part of the shoot was dealing with body-paint rubbing off of the dancers. We had an amazing special-fx makeup artist on board, but despite everyone's best efforts, there was no avoiding some of the paint smearing off due to bodyheat/sweat. Nevertheless, with some amazing assistance by a dedicated VFX team at Coyote Post, the final product looks just about flawless.

Have no idea what they're doing but they have a month to promo the album. Another single perhaps? Let's see what they do.

It was announced a few hours ago that the remaining dates on the PxP Tour have been cancelled as KC's doctors have put her on vocal rest.

...and since the 9/19 Walnut Creek show was my opportunity to see them live, I am bummed with eternal bummage.  However, it will give them time to poromote, promote, promote.

What does that mean in terms of airplay? Will a station like NYC Z100 play it once an hour over the course of a week, a month? Will it be on heavier rotation? I imagine tweets and call-ins could mean more "spins".

From a cursory glance at Z100 New York's site, it appears to be a major station serving a large market. If other metro areas in the U.S. add CSL to their lineups this bodes well for exposure--and may cause a spike in the vid's YT views.

I'm really curious about their foray into mainstream radio or mainstream media in general, especially about what radio listeners can bring to the table in terms of new PTX fans, etc. And i'm curious to see how PTX hooks hold up against the real catchy earwormy hooks the likes of Cheerleader Whip/NaeNae.

They continue to be a digital powerhouse, because that's where most of the younger generation (their main audience) hang out anyway.

http://www.broadcastingcable.com/news/currency/school-daze-pt-2-department-stores/144153

In terms of engagement, however, Macy’s back-to-school focused “Can You Bring It Like Pentatonix?” a-cappella contest ad rose above the rest, generating over 11% of the total digital chatter among online views, social actions, and web searches in the department store ad category

And just yesterday, I am struggling to explain how Subscriber number don't immediately equal to view counts to my dear ol' dad.

He, for some reason he couldn't explain, really does like CSL, and refer it to the "that song with the wallpaper". But he said "well, shouldn't they like automatically have 8 million views? Why so low? Why don't people like this song".

Which made me think that maybe the mainstream is more useful for them to draw in older audience who yearn for oldschool sounds.

Edit: Speaking of viral videos, I wonder if they ever had another mpromptu public stuff after the Airport Thrift Shop (and whether the aviation authority would let them do it still heh heh).

I'm sure they won a few traveller's hearts that way.

People on Twitter keep sending us tweets about CSL playing and requesting it on radio. (Very confused as to how the radio industry works). Someone sent us a link to a radio news network site, it has a list of new songs coming out to be added (if they choose to) onto mainstream radio. You can check it out here - http://fmqb.com/article.asp?id=16691And wow that list of shows why only a handful of songs are getting airplay. Got to have a strong label backing with these songs.

Another major market has just added CSL. Star 101.3 in San Francisco. Apparently it played twice in the last couple of hours.

Don't know how well it's doing overseas but a fellow Pentaholic from Singapore says it's been added to a popular radio station. https://twitter.com/KimPiggie/status/643434979100348416

I think there are a few things colluding that can explain this. These could apply to any YT channel but my examples are PTX-specific:

  • Bogus/inactive social media accounts that haven't yet been removed or suspended (YT, FB, Twitter...all social media platforms).
  • Secondary/tertiary or parody accounts - a user legit subscribes to PTXofficial on YT via Account1 but also subs via Account2. User is outside U.S.--Germany, for example--and uses a proxy server to view PTX vids as soon as they're released. Because of the ongoing situation between YT and GEMA, however, many German PTX fans can't watch the vid until the block gets lifted. So, this user mirrors the vid and uploads it to Account2. User spreads the word to their subs and the PTX vid gets watched by more people--but the original vid's view count is unaffected. Additionally, there may be users who sub PTXofficial only for the purpose of re-uploading their vids to leech views (because they know PTX is a hot digital property).
  • Not all the millions of subs to PTXofficial on YT are individual subscribers - back when PTX first created their channel, I poked around just to see who in the a cappella community had subscribed to them. There are lots of subs that are of groups or organizations. I remember seeing lots of U.S. collegiate aca groups that were subs. Individual members of these groups could also be subs, but the group sub is not necessarily the one used to log a view or a like.
  • FB side-loading/free-loading - FB hasn't put in a scheme or the coding to properly tag video sources. Someone takes a PTX vid off of YT and uploads it to FB but strips away any tie-back to YT. When the vid is played in FB, views never make it back to YT so the view count of the original vid on YT is unaffected. This is especially irksome to those with monetized YT channels.
  • Copyright blocks - in any country where a new PTX vid is immediately blocked due to copyright disputes, users will find other means of accessing the vid. The view count of the original upload is unaffected.

There may be other forces in play but the above reasons are a good start.

How about that...I'm rooting for a record label because it is supporting one of its acts. I do wonder, though, how PTX is regarded in the upper echelons of RCA. They aren't the biggest, most famous artist signed to RCA--but for a big label to throw their weight (and $$$) behind an a cappella act in the current music environment is telling. It also makes me wonder if the reason RCA is according them this treatment is due to PTX's profitability, or potential profitability.

PTX's digital dominance, if you will, makes it easy for them to market themselves. Of course, a passionate and motivated fanbase generating lots of word-of-mouth advertising also helps. And, Patreons fund PTX videos. These are expenses either not borne by the label or come at reduced cost. Perhaps the decision to spend for radio promo was an easy call.

Also, I thought that if RCA were to make a radio push for PTX, they would start with smaller markets and work their way up. But they are confident enough in the product to go right to the majors. I don't know if this is a moon-shot plan, but I like it. And this could have a nice trickle-down effect.

@SrPab, that makes a lot of sense! I've only been able to think about inactive accounts. In four years there're bound to be passwords lost/accounts compromised that leads people to make new/different addresses.

The copyright country viewing issue always make me sad.

Link to comment

I think RCA is confident enough after PTX gave them that platinum certification and other colors in other countries (and it's almost christmas again!)

This buildup is similar to last year with PTX vol III released in late September (or October in some countries) then slowly weaving TCTM into the promo.

This time, they can use TCTM as reminder of what PTX can offer listeners in terms of aural pleasure to entice them to get the original-song album while reminding them that yes! you can still get TCTM for a christmas present double whammy :)

Also, I think it's also part of a tacit agreement that RCA go the "extra mile" so to speak because many lower level promo stuff PTX can already do by themselves. In a way it's good that PTX and their team are very capable people, frees up RCA to do the other "riskier" stuff at the price of "standard" stuff. I think this hybrid between Patreon-/Band-driven and Label-driven promotion is very good for bands like PTX or such like. In the past where studios and labels bear the most brunt they wouldn't even consider seriously to promote acts like this (see Epic Fail).

Wasn't there an article sometime ago (last year?) praising PTX as not just groundbreaking in terms of their music, but also in terms of how well they promote themselves without major label backing (pre-RCA). Not to trivialize RCA's contribution, but PTX sure made it easier for them.

Yes! FTW = Cross-promotion + Halo effect. And releasing a couple of new Christmas covers, if they are so inclined, would be a no-brainer.

Re: "Epic Fail"...when I first read this I thought, "Hmm, do I know a band called Epic Fail?" LOL...then it registered--the Epic record label.

I agree that bands (a cappella or otherwise) who are willing and able to market themselves via low-cost and time-efficient methods, and can create a critical mass of a fanbase, makes it easier for a major label to take a chance on them. But, the group needs to take charge and be in the driver's seat in terms of selling themselves, engaging with fans, etc. Before the radio push, I think where RCA had the most sway was with songwriting and studio time. And, maybe, RCA hooked up Kelly and PTX. But, Team PTX is self-driving and self-sustaining.

That being said, I don't know if PTX has caused other record labels to rethink their stance on a cappella acts. Overall, I think a cappella is still considered music's red-headed stepchild. I don't keep up with them, but I believe the current assessment on Home Free making inroads in the Country music space is "slow, but steady". In other words, no major breakthroughs but they are hanging in there. Columbia may be playing a waiting game with them to see if they are "worthy" of more resources and assistance.

I think that a big part of the appeal of PTX to a studio like RCA is that they are cross-generational in their fans. The kids are the YouTube/streaming/free download listeners, which gets RCA youth cred, but the money comes from the older fans who actually buy the physical CD and/or pay for the iTunes/Amazon download of the entire album (which I fully identify as, since I'll be doing both, just so I can get the three tracks from the Target special edition!).

Home Free has the older fans, but I don't see them getting the younger ones in the numbers that PTX has.

The decline in Youtube views can be attributed to all those things @SrPab mentioned above but their long lay off really hurt them. So many casual fans just tuned out. Youtube has a problem with videos appearing in peoples subscription boxes. 3.4M view in 2 weeks is still great for an original song. Steady rate and airplay will keep the views ticking over. Other tools are used to measure success as well, 1.4M streams on Spotify compared to their Cheerleader cover which has 1.8M. Shazam has 11,000 hits too.

Really cool that RCA is confident in them, heard it on the radio randomly the other day for the first time which was nice.

Random tidbit 1: The other day on PTX's verified FB page, someone left a post saying that she heard CSL on the radio...in Lithuania.

Random tidbit 2: From what I can determine via certain tweets, PTX was apparently shooting another music vid yesterday. Kirstie, the one hair issue I had was looking at her in that new video. I don't know if it was intentional, but the hair really looks frizzed out like crazy. Kind of dry, like it's getting overtreated. Or.... it's just a "look".

Scott's hair looks okay from a distance, not as good close up. Looking at Mitch's shaved sides all of the time must have gotten to him.

About Kirstie's CSL hairstyle...I saw a reply tweet from her where she was responding to unflattering criticism of it. She said it was a Debbie Harry (of the group Blondie) reference.

debbydeb, even though I subscribe to PTXofficial, I'm just used to using YT's search box looking for things "ptx" or "pentatonix"--and then filtering for Upload Date. This way, I can see not only anything new from them, but also vids that are PTX-adjacent. I know it's an imperfect way to search but I've discovered things like reaction vids, private performance vids, vines/snapchats, stuff from Pentaholic Choir, stuff from PTX Community Day, and vids from other legit or wannabe vocal groups around the world covering PTX arrangements (ranging from above-average to cringe-worthy).

I also search on "acappella" and "a cappella"--with hit-or-miss results--as PTX-related stuff shows up sometimes. But I've also found a few gems in terms of non-PTX/non-PTX-inspired a cappella performances.

I surprise myself - I think the CSL video with TInk (I want a stage name like that) is better than the original.

I would love it if more PTX videos featured dancers.  I'm a huge SYTYCD fan and I'd be in heaven if I could see PTX and the SYTYCD people at the same time.  I also would never get work done.

I agree that Scott's hair is getting worse.  I think Mitch's is getting better.  He has a great profile and the new style is playing that up more.

I find the idea of Kirstie paying homage to Debbie Harry incredibly endearing.  That hits me where I live.
