MrsRafaelBarba January 25, 2015 Share January 25, 2015 Watching now on blu, it always comes to mind while I'm watching the show. Especially seeing Dame Maggie and now Richard E. Grant. 2 Link to comment
Avaleigh January 25, 2015 Share January 25, 2015 There's also Jeremy Swift who plays Spratt. He played a gay valet in Gosford Park. That character couldn't have been more different than the character of Spratt so I'd say Swift is pretty talented. There are a lot of similarities only I think with Gosford Park that the characters are saltier and harder to like in general. I suppose the Kelly MacDonald and Emily Watson characters are rootworthy in their own ways but these were characters that I enjoyed watching and thought were interesting but didn't find to be particularly likeable. And just to be clear, this isn't a criticism of the writing in fact I think it's a strength. I've always disagreed with the idea that characters need to be likeable and lovable in order to be watchable. I've read comments where people think that Maggie was playing the same character in Gosford as she does in DA and I completely disagree. They were both widowed Countesses with snobbish streaks but apart from that I thought the characters were very different and I basically think that Violet wouldn't have had a terribly high opinion of the Countess of Trentham. Avaleigh January 26, 2015 Share January 26, 2015 My favorite Richard E. Grant scene in Gosford is when his character is all excited after Emily Watson's housemaid character gives away her affair with the man of the house Sir William in front of a party of guests at dinner. Grant's character is cleaning up in the dining room and helping himself to the leftover wine and telling the members of staff who weren't there for it "You should have seen it." Very amusing little scene. 3 Link to comment
caligirl50 February 16, 2015 Share February 16, 2015 I am pleased as punch that Julian Fellowes is following Robert Altman's lead and putting many of the Gosford Park cast in Downtown Abbey. The GP cast won the Screen Actor's Guild Award for Best Ensemble Cast and it's nice to see them gathered together (sort of) again. 1 Link to comment
