Spencer Reid: Gorgeous Gray Matter

the way it was written made me think it was just another 'let's make fun of Reid' moment. Breen Frazier wouldn't have written it that way had this been his script. It would have been clear it was a germaphobe moment for him.

Yeah i hate the emphasis on the germaphobe thing, and the implication that Reid thinks sex is just a bunch of germs. They can't have it both ways. Either Reid wants to have sex with someone he is in love with like he was with Maeve, or he's someone who thinks sex is about germs and love is just in his valentine brain.

Virgil is the one who wrote this episode, and I think he writes pretty weak Reid. I mean, he is the one responsible for Reid being depicted as weak and out of shape (Penelope ran faster than him!) in "Rabid." So his inconsistent characterization of Reid doesn't surprise me at this point. But the show barely even hints at Reid's sexuality. Sure, he has had the occasional flirtation, and one actual relationship, but he never even met her, and didn't even know her full name or key details. The closest he has been to actually being sexual is "Somebody's Watching", and that was literally 10 years ago. I think there has been ENOUGH (but not that much in the grand scheme of things) to suggest that Reid actually has a sex drive (though I have always come down on the side of him still being a virgin), so I imagine he does want to have sex, but likely only with someone he is in love with.

I didn't have a problem with Reid commenting on the amount of germs that would be spread by a complete stranger prostitute involving herself in a threesome with a strange couple she'd never met before who had been with who knows how many people prior to that.

It's one thing when someone has sex with a person they know, trust, and love. Sex with a complete stranger and sex with someone who gets paid to have sex with others-- and not in a high end escort situation that might provide better health care-- is just asking for trouble.

Reid doesn't like to shake hands with people because he doesn't know where their hands have been. I can easily see him not enthralled with the idea of a threesome or even just hooking up with a stranger. Keep in mind that he does have trust issues.

Maybe something happened to make Reid more squicked about germs. Like, maybe he got a cold sore when Tobias gave him mouth-to-mouth or his immunity was somewhat compromised for awhile after recovering from the Anthrax.

Strictly speaking, the thing with Tobias could have tipped Reid over the edge into germaphobia. He was injected against his will, and he's smart enough to know the dangers of used needles. Yes, when Hankel was lucid he was the least dangerous of the three personalities, but it was still his idea and not "Charles" or "Raphael" who decided that it would "help" to bring Dilaudid into the situation, and Spencer wouldn't have known where he got his works.

These! So much! I didn't have a problem at all with Reid saying the thing about germs. I agree that the anthrax and the kidnapping issues probably didn't help it. Edited by autumnmountains

I somehow stumbled upon Criminal Minds during one of ION's marathons and it was an episode during CM's Chanel "little black dress" days. Believe me, my baby blues honed on Dr. Spencer Reid right away. I thought to myself, "Who is this beautiful man?" Even though Spencer was totally "nerdified" with the NASA circa 1968 wardrobe, flattened down hairdo, and Matthew's then extreme thinness and bad posture, I couldn't help but notice how beautifully wrought Spencer (well, actually Matthew) was. It was as if his looks were from another time. I just saw the classic flick, "My Fair Lady" on the big screen, and I swear to God I saw an etching of Matthew on a wall in Henry Higgins' parlor.

But enough about my movie viewing habits...

I soon found out the actor emoting as Spencer could actually act! Hmm, imagine that? Sure, someone can bring the "pretty" but if that someone is untalented I lose interest pretty quickly.

But it was the actual character of Dr. Spencer Reid that hooked me. Genius-types usually get portrayed in two very clichéd and boring tropes. One is the "cold, logical robot." The other is the condescending, genius-splainer, the guy who looks down at us peons with our slightly above average IQs and our lowly undergrad degrees. Spencer had a warmth, empathy and kindness I truly appreciate, not only in fictional characters, but in real life.

Yet, Spencer wasn't perfect. He could be really impatient with himself. He sometimes didn't read social cues as well as he could. He often let his emotions get the better of him. At times, he seemed too insecure, frightened and lacked a certain confidence. And let's face it, he can't tell a joke to save his life for the most part when giving a speech.

But thank goodness, all of these made him fully human, and even though he's been completely dismantled to the point he's just a pretty cut-out who spouts out smart stuff in the MESSER-potamia era, I will always have fond memories of Dr. Spencer Reid: Original Recipe.

Regarding the threesome line, I hope it's just Spencer being germaphobic and not a "girls are icky" moment, but with the way Reid has been infantilized in the past few seasons I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter and it ticks me off.

I think by now we fully realize Spencer is a man who is attracted to women, has sexual desires and wants to find love with the right woman. What makes Spencer such a potent character for me (and probably a lot of other women), is he isn't some blatant playa who wants to bed down a bunch a babes he sees as mere "fuck toys." He is courtly type who wants to have sex with someone he loves (or at least likes a great deal).

I'm not a prude but I really hate how our sex-drenched culture has made sex so debasing, puerile and blatantly in our face. Spencer opening up a door for a woman is a million times more sexy than Morgan dancing with a bunch of chicks on the dance floor while Penelope creepily ogles him. Ick, that scene made me gag.

And this might make some people gag and call me a throwback, but I truly think there is something to the old cliché be a lady in the parlor, a cook in the kitchen and whore in the bedroom. I can imagine Spencer being a male version of that. He may still be a virgin (though I ship Elle stamped his V-card but that's how I roll), but hey, when you think about it, you're always a virgin with a new lover. What works with one person might not work with another. And we all know Spencer wants to know things, and he's definitely willing to learn a few sexual tricks  through a lover's ideas, suggestions and that wonderfully curiosity of his.

Besides, the biggest sex organ is the brain, and if Spencer's brain was an actual penis he'd split a girl in half.

Yeah, that totally makes sense. He was probably just implying that it would be hard to convince somebody to do that act because many people would have hesitations about the possible "grossness" factor. however I really hope he gets a girlfriend sometime before the show ends so he can have the family he seems like he wants.

I agree with all of this. In some ways it seems like Spencer is from a different era regarding romantic relationships. I think he would be very chivalrous in a relationship. I just really wish the writers seemed interested in going down this route with Spencer. it doesn't have to be a big deal or be a story "arc" but just a few mentions and scenes every now and then. It would show how he matured from the "kid" that he was in season 1. And I would absolutely love it if he had children. I think the woman would have to be very different from him, however. Still intelligent, but not in the same way. I think she would have to be very curious/understanding/nurturing. That's also a reason I didn't really think Maeve and Spencer would've made a good couple. They seemed to be more like colleagues than bf/gf to me. But then again it did seem like she made him happy, and I wish they would have explored that relationship further before killing her. I actually really liked the dynamic he had with Lila, even though of course it would have to be with someone besides Lila. I think they complemented each other well.

Wasn't sure where else to put this.  MGG posted a photo on his IG earlier -- said he's still in New Orleans.

Anyway, if you're a Matthew-lover, go immediately to look.  I think it short-circuited my brain.

That man is just hell on ovaries, isn't he?

I don't think I've ever seen a photo of him showing so much skin (you won't hear me complaining). Maybe he's pretty proud of being so fine, plus if the film has nude scenes (why did my mouth suddenly go dry?), maybe he figures me may as well get started...

honestly, I think he's just teasing us. He's never really been much to show off the bod (even just shirtless is hard to find!) I don't know if he's self-conscious about it, and he's always eschewed any sort of regular exercise in the past. I don't think he's really particularly buff here either; it's just his arms but they've always looked good, even in his skinniest days.

am I blind? did he shave/wax the pits?

I don't think so, RF.

Whatever he has been doing, I'm appreciative.

Looks like he has dyed his hair.  Honestly, the 'do is cracking me up -- I'm liking the expression on his face, too.  I just want to get my hands on his... hair.  Really.  It's just glorious here.

Edited to add: isn't he supposed to play a wrestler or something in an upcoming film?  Maybe that's part of it.

Oh, I like him skinny too, this is just a surprise. As long as he keeps the attitude disposition he has, I'm good. Plus, if there is a season 12, I'm sure TPTB won't want a buff Reid, so it's nice to see this now. :)

I think he is an ex wrestler in Merrily, but he's still shooting #68kill, he says this is in NewOrleans. And i dunno, I don't think he's dyed the hair, I think it's just the lighting. *shrug* maybe H&MU used coloured mousse lol!

Quite the hairdo indeed!

I'm definitely seeing some rhomboid definition -- not having had the benefit of seeing him on this much display previously, I don't know how much of it is new.  But whereas he was kind of  | |  in his clothes in days gone by, for the past few, he has looked a wee bit more  \ /.

I will definitely take either one.

Oh, Mr. Gubler. You are such a tease.

Thanks for the pic. The 'do is epic, and needs it's own Twitter feed or Instagram feed.

I do like Matthew's arm muscles, perfect for his lanky, slender body type.

There is truly something to the cliché "less is more," whether it comes to muscles, making a meal or make-up (it takes me less than five minutes to make-up my face).

Back on-topic: Matthew's hair-either it's the lighting or perhaps a rinse, but it really does look much darker than Matthew's usual brown locks.

Agreed.  While I could def get used to this sight on the daily, I can't help but figure he isn't going to go the way of Shemar, who shows us his beefy cake hourly.

There's bullets in that hair-do!

Yes, I work with P-shop all the time, and i believe it's real also, it's hard to distort or cut and paste on such a detailed/mundane background. And yes, JMO, he's been hiding nice arms for a while. But he does have a bit more shoulder and back width than i've seen. He hides whatever he's got that's not skinny geek for Reid. I think there's a rinse on his hair.

When you mouse over the box, you should see a square with an arrow cross on the upper left. Click it and then hit the Delete key. That should get rid of the box.

I have GOT to stop looking at this picture.

I think it is just the lighting. And the moisture in the air does not help. It has been raining a lot and the humidity in Louisiana is very high. I just hope that he is using mosquito spray because the little bastards are out in force and they are carrying the Zika virus. The rain has also been bringing out the fire ants. Hope he stays away from those. And I hope he's in a safe part of New Orleans-- it has a very high violent crime rate.

he's on a movie set, so there's probably all sorts of security. and he's the biggest (read: only) 'name' in the production, I've never heard of most of the people involved, except for Anna Lynne with whom he's been acquainted/friends with for some time.

not too worried about his personal security, but the mosquito thing causes me a bit of anxiety on his behalf. Hopefully they've taken some measures to protect themselves from that.

wouldn't want that tuchus all bitten up.....by mosquitoes

I'll have to remember, 'it's just makeup, it's just makeup, it's just makeup'  ....... hmm, if they do the beating scene, perhaps there's hope for the um, hood of the car scene, the stockroom boxes scene, the hotel bed scene too?

I'm not sure if I'm going to see a movie like this despite Matthew being in it; doesn't seem my type. And like you I hate seeing him like that. And being the victim of a brutal crime myself, it might bring up my PTSD and my issues with depression. All that blood on his face reminds me of the blood that was on my face and in my hair dripping down my neck and shoulders, not exactly a memory I want to revisit.
