S02.E03: Why Did the Mainlanders Cross the River?

I'm confused. Did I miss the part where Herschel somehow ended up with the crazy old woman? How did that happen, or did they not yet reveal the timeline?

Those were flashbacks to last season when Maggie went to Manhattan to search for Herschel in the first place. Herschel was kept by the old lady during that time. So now they're showing us a bit of what he went through and why he's acting kind of weird now.

The tunnel o' walkers and walkers in the tall grass were nice set pieces but good gods are the mainlanders terrible at this. Bad Haircut is played by an actress who did well enough on Orange is the New Black but her line readings here are only slight less bad than her utter delusion that a bunch of conscripts who haven't managed to do much but get blown up or eaten can still really accomplish anything but continue to get blown up or eaten.

Still don't understand how one old lady wields all this power over all these assorted lunatics and hangers on and frankly her neverending musings about art and culture are ringing tediously pretentious after watching her gut someone who did show a genuine love of art at the end of the world. But she does seem to know what to say to Herschel to get into his head, so maybe there's something there.

The less said about the Central Park weirdos the better. At least we're not going to have to sit through some star-crossed teenage romance with zombies as I originally feared they were setting up, so that's something I guess.

Yeah, I liked her on OITNB, but she's terrible here, even worse than the "Colonel," who I swear was the sheriff last season. It's telling that I have no idea what his name is. They got decimated just trying to get to the island, so the 15 or so that are left are going to fight everyone and take the methane? Sure, Jan.

So obvious she's going to try to take power from the "Colonel," who will probably come over to the good guy's side.

I only know his name is Armstrong from the wiki. He was the marshal sent to bring back Negan last season and was promoted to colonel because he claimed he caught and killed Negan, conveniently without being required to produce any proof. That should make for an awkward conversation should any of our mainlander crew survive long enough for the inevitable meetup.

I still have no idea who the "good guys" are really supposed to be in this. That was one of the main problems with the marshal-now-colonel's story last season too. Were we even supposed to like him or was Negan right that he was just a dick? He was sent to bring in and/or execute Negan by the ambiguously shady New Babylon crew for what may have been some justified killings but whiffed on it while taking credit for it after hanging out with Negan a bit in the first NYC sojourn.

Thanks. I remember the marshal looking for Negan, and that's about it. He was a dick last season, but it seems like he might be getting a redemption arc, with Bad Haircut being the villain.

I have to assume Maggie is the good guy here, so whoever she happens to be aligned with is the "good side." Negan is as ambiguous as they want to make him.

That's the part I hated the most.  The second I saw them heading to that field I knew what was coming.  I still haven't found the interaction with the tunnel and the walkers stuck in the foliage.

I know right?  It would take two seconds to put her out but nobody seems to have the guts to do so, why?

Herschel could agree with her for a better world but I guess he will work out the rest by himself.  I find it interesting to discover who he is after all those years beeing a side character beside his sister.

I'm a little curious when these Hershel flashbacks are supposed to be set.  Is this before or after the Croat cut off his toe?  Talk about playing good cop/bad cop.

Also, are they trying to say that Hershel actually designed aspects of the city, like the bridges they built to get across from one skyscraper to another without having to go down to the ground?

I don't get why Dama was playing Satie when she said last week she hated art from the past.  Unless she just hates Bach specifically for some reason.  Or maybe it was just background music.  Oh well.
