After a severed human arm is found by some tourists out fishing, Yancy sees this as the perfect opportunity to get his police detective position back, but he didn't realize that he would have to contend with a world of greed and corruption that decimates the land and environment in both Florida and the Bahamas, a never ending procession of Florida oddballs, and one bad monkey.

Interview with show runner Bill Lawrence, who talks about why it was called Bad Monkey and what his plans are for second or future seasons if the show is renewed:

Quote

DEADLINE: Let’s start with the question at the very end of the finale when Yancy asks Rogelio, “What’s in the car, man?” What’s in the car and what’s next?

LAWRENCE: Somebody asked me why I picked Bad Monkey. Carl Hiaasen, who is an idol of mine, has like, 20 bestsellers. It’s one of the only books he wrote a sequel to; the sequel’s called Razor Girl. And if you watch the opening credits, the sand thing — no one’s seen it yet — there’s a couple things, like a beach ball, and if people pause it when they go by a beach chair, there’s a copy of that book, like a summer read sitting there. That will tell people what is next.

DEADLINE: So if and when there is a renewal, Season 2 will be based on Razor Girl?

LAWRENCE: Yes, it will be based on Razor Girl. And I’m super hopeful that we will start working on it very soon.

DEADLINE: I believe there are only two books featuring Yancy. Could you do more than two seasons and go beyond the source material?

LAWRENCE: I think that the best thing about the new kind of, I don’t want to say limited series model, but White Lotus is a good template as a show that people expected to be one year. But by its very nature, even though it’s still called White Lotus, it’s a new group of characters, save for one. If you look at Bad Monkey andRazor Girl, anybody that watched the last few episodes of Bad Monkey knows it’s a bloodbath, and I can’t really do a second season with the same characters.

But that’s what’s cool about Carl, each year is kind of a different paper issue mystery. There’s no third book written, but the joke for me is either pressuring Carl to write one or taking one of his old ones and making Yancy the lead. It’s so much easier when you use an amazing source material, and the dude is really good, he’s a classic American satirist and also a good guy.

It sounds like the show was generally well received, so I expect we‘ll be getting at least one more season. Yay!!

They're going to remove the production from the Florida Keys to LA.

Apparently Vince Vaughn and Bill Lawrence moved and lived in Florida during the shooting.

But for season 2 and beyond, I guess they prefer to stay near LA.  Also Lawrence has a lot of other projects so he may be handing it off to someone else.

They will do some location shooting in FL but not clear if they will pretend to still be in FL or the story will show that they're now in LA.

Hiassen is very closely associated with FL.  Apparently it's going to be an original story, not based on any other Hiassen story.

Again it will be interesting to see if they try to pass off Southern Californian filming locations as Florida or the Florida Keys.

Because Yancy talked about how his little place on the waterfront, with red lighting for young seat turtles and being visited by that doe was like some heaven for him.

Filming in LA or CA is more expensive but apparently filming season 1 on location was also expensive.  Netflix's Nobody Wants This is notable for a recent show filmed in LA -- that cast said it was nice to be able to stay home, not take their families out of state or to another country (Canada) during filming.

So maybe VV and Lawrence pushed for the location switch and the tax credit would boost their case.
