Basically an updated 'Particle Effect', that I'd assumed had been perfected long ago as a BorisFX or AfterEffects plugin. Or has it just become trendy?

You can hardly blame ‘his dark materials’….but maybe it is a company or guy that really likes it.

In Foundation they have the paintings that move, kind of like shifting sand which is what the opening is representing.

I definitely noted the similarity between Foundation (great series!) and the opening sequence to this.

Not sand, but when I first saw the opening credits, it reminded me a little of the opening credits for "The Crown", another animated close-up with a black background and you're not sure what you're looking at with the growing bands of metal making up the crown.
