“Why does everything have to be so bloody complicated?”

“The investigation or your personal life?”

Fictional 1954

  • Lance showed Pünd and Ms. Cain a love letter drafted by Melissa (not addressed to John), dated in February.
Quote

“My darling, darling. I can’t go on living this lie anymore. I simply can’t. We have to be brave and tell the world about the love we share.”

  • On the day of Melissa’s murder, Oscar went to her house 23 minutes before she called Dr. Collins. He heard Melissa arguing with her housekeeper — Phyllis Chandler, telling her and her son, Eric to leave Clarence Keep by the end of the week. Oscar left after that, hoping to talk to her the next day.
  • The phrase “the hotel was crooked” that Melissa said in their argument referred to a painting of her hotel. There’s an eyehole concealed on a wall, behind that painting. Eric was a peeping Tom and he removed some of Melissa’s personal items from her room.
  • Algernon insinuated that Melissa and him had a very close relationship. He was at a pub when she was murdered.
  • Algernon has advised Melissa to invest £55K in his company called Day’s End Holdings — a Ponzi scheme.
  • The murder suspects — Lance & Maureen Gardner (hotel fraud), Phyllis Chandler (to protect Eric the peeping Tom), Algernon Marsh (valueless investment), Oscar Berlin (refused to be in his movie), John Spencer (she’s leaving her husband).

  • Frank Parris went to see the solicitor (Sajid Khan) about a house in Westleton, left by his parents to him and his sister — Joanne Webster.
  • Frank wanted Joanne to buy out his share of the house at a market price because his agency (Day’s End) went busted. If the Websters were unable to do so, they had to put the house up for sale.
  • On her wedding day, Cecily read a horoscope (she read it everyday) that something will go wrong. It was true - the flowers weren’t delivered and Lawrence’s fountain pen (as something borrowed) went missing.

Present Day

  • Aiden goes on a police broadcast via BBC, making a plea for Cecily to return home safely.
  • Susan goes to see the Websters about Frank. Sajid Khan is right — Joanne is horrible and her husband, Martin is quite submissive.
  • Liam tells Lisa that he knows how the Trehernes were treating Stefan, how much they were paying him. Lisa threatens him to keep his mouth shut.
  • Susan goes to see Aiden to ask about the fountain pen. He becomes defensive, saying he didn’t accuse Stefan of stealing it. When Susan tells him that she’s planning to visit Stefan in the prison, he doesn’t seem happy about it.
  • DS Locke warns Susan to leave Branlow Hall when she accuses him of arresting a wrong person for Frank’s murder.

Another sighting of LION — Eric’s comic book.

The latter makes me think that Martin is the murderer, that he snapped and killed Frank.  It's always the quiet, submissive types, isn't it?  And his statement about Cecily being buried with a rope around her neck seemed awfully specific and definitive.

What's going on with Susan's sister?  Did she and her husband split up?  Is she ill?  Why aren't they being honest about why Jack left university?  And why doesn't she want Susan to go to her house?

That's my guess too. She's too embarrassed to tell Susan about it.

Money problem maybe?

I would normally agree with you, but it seems too obvious, doesn't it? His mention of Cecily being buried with rope in the woods is just too obvious. I think k hrs a red herring re: Cecily.
