Will we see Phoebe again? Is Molly going to be a series regular in Season 2?

Molly will continue to be a series regular in Season 2. … We wanted to be honest to the character and honor what she’s going through mentally and not have her panic disorder solved in an episode and have everything just go back to normal. We really wanted to put her character through something, but she is taking this other position. She will have stories there, and we’ll go from there, but she is definitely going to continue to be a big part of the fabric of the show.

"The Irrational" Season 2 premiere date moves from October 1, 2024 at 10pm to October 8, 2024 at 10pm so as not to compete with the vice presidential debate between Minnesota governor Tim Walz and U.S. Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio).

While Jesse L. Martin’s Alec might be living in blissful ignorance at the start of the Season 2 premiere, “He will find out very early in the episode that Rose has been kidnapped, and he will immediately get on the case with Marisa,” showrunner Arika Lisanne Mittman tells TVLine. And while Prof. Mercer usually has the inside track on people’s motivations from the jump, “He’s going to be flying blind a little bit at first,” the executive producer adds. “He will bring those to the FBI, but they’re really groping to figure this out.” However the season-opening crisis shakes out, she continues, viewers can expect a slightly different Irrational than they saw in Season 1. “Rather than focusing on a season-long mystery, we’re focusing on character journeys,” Mittman says. And might there be a chance that one of those journeys ends with some lovin’ for Alec’s sister, Kylie? “There’s a chance, yes,” she teases.

BONUS SPOILER!: Speaking of romance, are we the only ones who feel a little something-something brewing between Phoebe and Rizwan? “So far, we are exploring the relationship as a friendship,” Mittman says, “but you never know what could happen in the future.”

TVLINE | OK, now the big stuff. We get a huge moment at the end for Rose and Alec, when they exchange “I love you”s. Talk to me about why now, why her, and what we can expect as we move forward.


You know, it’s funny. We cast Karen David back in the beginning of last season, Episode 4, and we just couldn’t let her go. She was so fun, the chemistry between Alec and Rose was great from the get-go, and Karen David is such a wonderful actress. The two of them are so great together that we were like, “OK, let’s have them go on a date and let’s see how that goes.” … The character of their relationship really fit with the show in that it’s very positive. It’s a positive, hopeful show overall, and their relationship is very overall positive and hopeful. I was getting ready, like, “When are they going to say ‘I love you’?” [Laughs] I had to restrain myself from putting it in Episode 3!

Yes, all three are sticking around for the rest of the season and they’ll be figuring out what their dynamics are and the dynamic of that trio will definitely adjust over the course of the season. I think Alec, Rose, and Marisa have such a mature handling of the situation that they’re kind of role models in a way for how to handle a situation and the kids are going to have to figure out how to get there a little bit more, how to figure out how to be a team of three because that can be difficult and we’ll see how those dynamics play out over the course of the season.
