I don’t know how much this show adheres to the real life story, but it’s getting tougher to believe. Jake wants to go out in public with a missing gangster leader’s prize mistress. The detective with integrity “hides” his family from the Yakuza at… his wife’s mother’s house. Before the dirty cop is taken out, the whole plan hinges on a cell call and there is no tracker. The most important videotape ever takes how long to copy? It’s the 90s, not the 1500s. Lots of bad planning and thinking by people in a dangerous world.

Also? Not interested in Sam’s club. And what is with the show’s smoking fetish?

At the time these events take place, Japanese men smoked just about everywhere--long distance trains, movie theaters, restaurants, coffee shops, on the street. Young women started picking up the habit too. This is true throughout much of Southeast Asia and the Far East. American tobacco companies found new markets when tobacco use started to drop off in the US.

Fortunately, the indoor air is getting a little better in Japan. There must be some health warnings that people are listening to.

Thank you, but my comment was less about how common it was for people of the era to smoke than about why the show focuses on it so much. People ate, drank and pooped then, too, but the show doesn’t have 6-10 shots an episode of the characters eating or drinking. It’s a deliberate choice by the show for some kind of vibe, like neon signs and lights on Miami Vice, and it’s gross.

Trying to capture the noir genre, I guess. Dark, hazy, and dangerous.
