pieguy December 2, 2023 Share December 2, 2023 I gave up on searching. I'm looking for a specific L&O episode. Please help. Here's the scenario: At the end of the episode and court ruling, the defendant is remanded to a psychiatric institution. He is marginally afflicted with his issues, but just makes it under the "bar" to go to the a hospital rather than jail. Dr. Skoda escorts him there at the end of the episode. Upon entrance, the defendant, and Skoda, realize that the mental hospital is way over the top for this guy. He's just not as bad off as the rest of the residents and is very scared of his new home. He feels like he doesn't belong and is degraded to be with the other more seriously afflicted patients/inmates. He places both hands over his face and constantly says, "no, no, no" shaking his head. Skoda feels for him, but promises he will visit him. End of episode. Can anyone tell me what Season and Episode this was? Thanks, J 2 Link to comment
Xeliou66 December 5, 2023 Share December 5, 2023 That’s an SVU episode - it’s SVU season 1 episode 16 - titled The Third Guy. Very sad and disturbing episode, the guy had sexually assaulted an older woman and she had a heart attack and died during the attack but the guy didn’t really understand what he was doing and wasn’t capable of assisting in his defense. Skoda and Cragen clashed in that episode. Cragen didn’t come off as likable and seemed to have a bias against shrinks, something which was never seen in any other episodes with Cragen, so he was kind of OOC. Skoda was great as always, it was nice to see him on SVU, this was before SVU got their own resident shrink in Huang. 1 Link to comment

(Especially as I have a daughter with special needs, including an intellectual disability.) And I think they were still trying to figure out Cragen in that first season, what they wanted the character to be. Link to comment

Huh? He was the same as he was on the Mothership. A good squad commander. The first season's new faces were the ones that were problematic, hence shuffling them both off and bringing in Ice T for the second season. Link to comment

I think SVU was still finding its footing in general in the first season, they were trying to figure out what kind of show it would be and what the dynamic between the characters would be like. Cragen wasn’t OOC in any other episodes of season 1, so I think it had more to do with the show trying to figure things out in general than anything to do with Cragen. But it was odd how Cragen was so pissed at Skoda - Cragen never showed a bias against shrinks in any other episode. 1 Link to comment
pieguy December 5, 2023 Author Share December 5, 2023 Wow. Thank you so much. I'll re-watch it later now that I know where to look. Funny how Skoda was in SVU in the very beginning seasons. 1 Link to comment

That the whole show was trying to figure itself out. Well, that the writers were. It seemed to have a lot of tone shifts in the first season. That being said, there were quite a few great episodes in that season. But watching some of them, then watching one from, say, season 3 or 4, the tone often feels different. 1 Link to comment

SVU season 1 does have some great episodes, particularly in the second half of the season when they got more of a handle on things and it flowed smoother - in SVU season 1 I love the episodes Limitations, Remorse, Chat Room, Contact and Slaves, those come to mind off the top of my head. SVU did improve even more in season 2 when they brought in Fin as Munch’s partner and Cabot as the regular ADA instead of the rotating cast of ADAs in season 1. 1 Link to comment

Agreed, particularly on Limitations, Remorse, and Slaves. Adding Closure to that list (which also had a great followup). 1 Link to comment

The best of the very early season 1 SVU episodes was episode 3, titled Or Just Look Like One - I loved seeing Briscoe/Green cross over and assist SVU - seeing Lennie reunited with Cragen and Munch was great. Lennie and Cragen didn’t interact in Cragen’s appearance in season 5 so it was great to see them share scenes again, I liked how Lennie (and the other Mothership detectives) called Cragen “Donny” - none of the SVU people ever called Cragen by his first name. 1 Link to comment
