She may even hold the answer to the question Lorna has long craved: what happened to her child? Fearing her sleepwalking escapades, Lorna tries to keep herself awake whilst seeking out the truth.

A gripping first episode!

We have been introduced to Lorna Brady in a memorable & unexpected way.

Lorna has a compelling backstory. She was sent to Kilkinure convent (a Magdalene laundry) at 15yo for being pregnant. Her baby daughter has been taken away by a nun into the care of Catholic Church, never to be seen or heard again. Driven to the edge of insanity by this experience, Lorna’s trauma manifests in various ways - fugue states, insomnia, hallucinations, sleepwalking etc.

We also get to hear some harrowing stories from other Kilkinure women who were sent to the same convent as Lorna.

Quote

“There were lots of reasons the girls ended up in the laundries. Not all of us had babies.”

Quote

“Peggy was a great beauty. They used to say she was after the boys and the married men. She never even had a boyfriend.”

Detective Colman Akande is investigating the death of his childhood priest - Father Percy Sheehan. The priest’s car is found abandoned just outside Lorna’s home town of Kilkinure (a fictional Irish town). He finds out that the priest was involved with the laundries. In a flashback, Father Percy was the one who took Lorna to Kilkinure convent.

A mysterious woman has left Lorna a note re her child.

This sends Lorna into a tailspin. They plan to meet at a pub but she’s a no show. Lorna wakes up in her bed the next morning with no recollection about the night before. To make matters worse, there’s a dead woman in her home. Lorna then calls that woman again only to find out it’s the dead woman’s phone.

After another episode of sleepwalking including burning a priest’s car, Lorna hides the dead body in her living room’s wall.

Ruth Wilson is phenomenal as Lorna Brady who’s struggling with serious mental health issues. Her funny snarks make her relatable while all her impulsive actions create unnecessary headaches to people around her.

It’s very intense but well written and the acting is amazing.  It is streaming in several different platforms if anyone has trouble finding it.  Paramount+ has it too.

Well, that was certainly a twist.  The civil suit is very likely to get overshadowed by the criminal investigation and who knows if any more bodies suddenly appear.

Ruth Wilson sure brings the crazy to her part.  Poor Lorna is right at the absolute breaking point.
