Hollywood is facing serious franchise fatigue. How ‘The Walking Dead’ bucked the trend
BY GREG BRAXTON   MARCH 14, 2024

So far, at least, “The Ones Who Live” appears to have bucked the trend, with the first two episodes topping the charts for cable dramas this season in key demographics. The Feb. 25 premiere attracted a combined total of 3 million viewers across multiple showings on AMC and simulcasts on other networks. (On AMC alone, the debut drew 1.3 million viewers, with Episode 2 bringing in 1.4 million. The series premiere is also the most-watched episode ever on AMC+.)

By contrast, the premieres of two previous spinoffs, “Dead City” and “Daryl Dixon,” attracted 1 million and 851,000 viewers, respectively, according to Nielsen.

No decision has been made yet about a second season — “anything can happen,” Gimple said — and it remains unclear whether fan interest in the franchise is capable of surmounting the structural challenges facing basic cable in the long run, especially as AMC lacks a streaming partner with the scale of Hulu, like competitor FX has.

Is there going to be a Season 2 of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live? –Goldie
As yet, there has been no official word from AMC that the “limited” part of the “limited series” will be removed.

Spoiler

But Sunday’s finale certainly leaves the door open for a continuation of the story. Whether this really is the end-the end, we suspect longtime fans of the franchise will find it extremely moving. (Keep those tissues handy, folks.) Additionally, the ep is peppered with several mini-montages of memorable moments involving Rick and/or Michonne from over the years.

1 | As nice as it is to see Rick and Michonne living the good life on The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, aren’t things coming to them a little too easily this far into the dystopia? A hybrid pick-up truck, cases of ramen, a full bottle of Black Label…? (And as reader Lisa H. asked, would Rick and Michonne really have been dumb to leave noodle wrappers like a trail of bread crumbs for Jadis to follow?) Also, are the walkers who bit Jadis some new variant that is utterly silent until the instant it attacks?

At the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, the trio did their damnedest not to tip their hand. Almost in unison, Gurira responded to TVLine’s question about a possible Season 2 with “Can’t answer that” as Gimple said, “Let’s just be quiet on this one.”

“Well, I die in the last episode,” joked Lincoln.

“Oops,” responded his leading lady. “No.”

“Or he’s doing a little psyop, and maybe he actually does,” Gimple suggested. “I would say anything is possible, even if Rick dies in the last episode. Anything is possible.

“We’re focused on this one right now,” he added, “but this one came together in a really amazing way where there were all sorts of plans, and the world changed, so we altered those plans and wound up with something we really liked.”

I hope they don't do a season 2. What's the hook? Michonne and Rick's raison d'être was to find their way back to each other, and they did that after a MASSIVE, years-long separation.

Unless season 2 were to focus on a Judith and/or RJ kidnapping/disappearance and them going off on another quest to find them, Rick and Michonne's story has been told, which was the purpose of this six-episode run.

Showing them living day-to-day as a family in the Commonwealth or Alexandria would just be the mothership redux.

Yes, this needs to be the end of this storyline.  Especially since they are committed to the RJ actor and when he appears on screen, a black hole of anti energy opens up. No one has been able to act with him at all.

4 | Is it really believable that The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live‘s CRM — with all of its choppers flying around when Jadis was delivering them As and Bs from the Heaps — would never have spotted Alexandria? Should Michonne have been quieter when ransacking Jadis’ office? Wouldn’t Beame have a detail posted outside his door? How was everyone but Rick, Michonne and Thorne killed in that massive explosion? How did Rick survive setting off a grenade right in front of his face? Why didn’t anyone but the couple’s kids come to welcome #Richonne home? And why did Rick leave behind his nifty prosthetic hand?

A single episode. That was all we got with Michonne’s crafty travel companion. But we came to love him as much (and as quickly) as she did. That being the case, we felt like we’d been shot through the heart right along with him when he was killed only seconds after seeing his friend reunite with long-MIA husband Rick.

Cailey Fleming and Anthony Azor, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live
...
Only one thing could possibly have been more satisfying to Walking Dead fans than seeing star-crossed lovers Rick and Michonne reunited, and that was seeing the couple reunited with their kids, Judith and RJ. Luckily, two years after the conclusion of the mothership, Fleming and Azor were able to reprise their roles and give the spinoff the happiest of endings. — C.M.
