AnimeMania January 26, 2023 Share January 26, 2023 Marvel Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is an animated TV Series with the first episode airing on February 10, 2023 at 8pm on the Disney Channel and then on February 15, 2023, the first 6 episodes will stream on Disney+. Marvel Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur follows 13-year-old super-genius Lunella Lafayette (a.k.a. Moon Girl) and her 10-ton T-Rex, Devil Dinosaur. After Lunella accidentally brings Devil Dinosaur into present-day New York City via a time vortex, the duo works together using a telepathic bond to protect New York City's Lower East Side from danger. Devil Dinosaur has been seen around in Marvel Comics since 1978. Devil Dinosaur's team-up with Moon Girl occurs for 47 issues from 2015 to 2019 by writers Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder, with artist Natacha Bustos. The events that occur in the animated series are not considered MCU canon. The TV Series has already been renewed for a second season. The Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur writer’s room is all women and so far all the directors have been women as well. Raphael Saadiq is the executive music producer and will lead the songwriting and musical score that reflects the many cultures and communities of New York City (hip-hop, pop, R&B, jazz, Jamaican, funk, Latin, etc.). The Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur soundtrack from Walt Disney Records, featuring the songs from the first season, is set to be released on the same day. The Opening Theme Song is Moon Girl Magic. Raphael Saadiq Behind The Moon Girl Magic Music Moon Girl Magic Opening Theme Diamond White voices Lunella Lafayette A.K.A. Moon Girl, a 13-year-old super-genius who becomes a roller-skating, gadget-wielding superhero. Fred Tatasciore voices Devil Dinosaur, who acts like a 10-ton dog: he's playful, fiercely loyal, and utterly driven by his appetite. As Moon Girl's partner (and family), he contributes muscle, teeth, claws, cunning, and an excellent sniffer. Jermaine Fowler voices James Jr., Lunella's dad, an optimistic and unconventional businessman. He and his family run Roll With It, the last roller-skating rink in New York City. "Roll with it" also happens to be James' personal credo, as he always looks on the bright side of life. Sasheer Zamata voices Adria, Lunella's mom, a social activist and musician who serves as the DJ at Roll With It, the family-owned roller-skating rink. Libe Barer voices Casey, a 13-year-old Puerto Rican-Jewish powerhouse. Casey is Moon Girl's manager and best friend, her mission is to make Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur the most beloved superheroes around. Alfre Woodard voices Mimi, Lunella's grandmother, the family's rock. She suffers no fools and guides all – particularly Lunella – with gentle reminders and advice. But act foolishly or get on her bad side and she'll set you straight with one of her patented zingers. Gary Anthony Williams voices Pops, Lunella's cool grandpa and the proud owner of Roll With It. He is a clever tinkerer and meticulous craftsman, constructing custom skates and reviving old pairs until they're better than new. Laurence Fishburne voices The Beyonder, a curious, mischievous, mercurial being. He's a comedically impish and self-centered trickster. While the all-knowing, all-powerful Beyonder is brilliant when it comes to the makeup of matter and the universe, he is clueless about humans. Laurence Fishburne is also an executive producer. Guest Cast: Daveed Diggs as Rat King, Andy Cohen, Maya Hawke, Cliff "Method Man" Smith, Cobie Smulders, Wesley Snipe, Gideon Adlon, Pamela Adlon, Anna Akana, Ian Alexander, May Calamawy, Wilson Cruz, Luis Guzmán, Astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison, Josh Keaton, June Diane Raphael, Paul Scheer and Tajinae Turner. Galileo908 February 12, 2023 Share February 12, 2023 Caught the first two episodes, and I'm hooked. There's really no show out there that looks like this. I love the aesthetic of the show, the color and music are just great. I'm really digging the leads, Devil Dinosaur is just adorable. I went to the NYCC panel and lo an behold, most of the questions were about Lawrence Fishburne (who wasn't there). Spoiler Aside from voicing the narrator, he's also voicing the Beyonder. They also gave out posters signed by everyone at the panel (except for surprise guest Raphael Saadiq), and a reprint of Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur #1. Link to comment
AnimeMania February 15, 2023 Author Share February 15, 2023 All of the 6 episodes mentioned in my previous post are available for viewing on Disney+. S01.E03: Run the Rink Ace Gibson as Gravitas Carlee Baker as Instantangirl Aaron Drown as Man Baby S01.E05: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow Kat Williams? as Rockin' Rudy Alanna Ubach as Clueless Girl S01.E06: The Beyonder Kari Wahlgren as Linh Pham/Stiletto The show itself is a visual feast for the eyes and ears, I can't think of another show so carefully crafted to manipulate so many elements on the screen, every little aspect designed for a singular purpose, to entertain. Blink, and you might miss an Easter Egg, the pillow or the door plaque spelling out the main character's name using elements from the Periodic Table: Lu71Ne10La57 or learn that Naruto is a student at Lunela's school in Episode 2. Having a jittery internet connection can ruin your entire viewing experience. Because the show is so meticulously and carefully crafted from top to bottom and from left to right, it requires that you have the focus of an immersive gamer to truly appreciate what is being presented to you on the screen. The non-gamer, casual, or inattentive viewer could easily have sensory overload, and be overwhelmed by the visuals, colors, sounds, and style flooding the screen, is that foreground or is that background, nothing telling you where you should focus your attention, what is important, what is eye candy. Immersive gamers deal with this type of situation on the daily, for long periods of time. Someone who only watches TV will not have experienced this level of immersion and the focus required to truly appreciate what is being offered to the viewer. This is where the show might fail, it is not a skill you can just learn in an instant. The show will not allow you to turn it on as background while you do something else, it requires a level of concentration and commitment from the viewer unmatched by anything currently on TV. I think it might be a little early for a show like this to find an audience fully committed to attempting to watch this type of show or maybe I am just underestimating the number of viewers who have mastered the immersive gamer vision needed to watch this MARVELous show. Either way it is sure to become a cult classic, and a first of it's kind. Link to comment
akg February 21, 2023 Share February 21, 2023 Aw, I'm sad there isn't more a discussion here. I love this show. So far, my favorite episodes have been the pilot and the one with her hair (I keep picturing Lunella's hair slinking away from her lab in those fabulous glasses and giggling to myself). I'm so happy Lunella has an awesome friend here (she doesn't in the comics). Casey is perfect. She's the type of girl character that so many shows would mock, especially in comparison to brainy main characters, but MG&DD treats her with respect and Lunella herself appreciates everything Casey brings to their friendship (and partnership). I also love that Devil Dinosaur has more of a personality here. Of course Lunella learned his language. Of course he loves her enough to stay. He's adorable. The changes to her family from the comic are great too. Giving them the roller rink ties them more to the community which works well. It helps explain why Lunella would want to keep doing the super hero thing. It's not (just) about her getting to make and use cool toys or play with her dinosaur, she's protecting her people. I hope we see more of LOS-307. They were so cute and I was very relieved everyone was able to resolve things peacefully. I think my only (minor) complain is that the female villains all look almost exactly the same (I seriously thought Instantanegirl was Aftershock returning in the Run the Rink episode).
