It strikes me that Kip probably could have done much better with more time, both time to taste and time to recalibrate on the concept if necessary. I guess competition cooking shows really select for people who can do it all in an hour and change. (And Danielle's carrot muffin is something she had worked out over a long period of trial and error before this show ever started, so I guess that's the other way to do well on any given challenge: adapt something you've got down cold to meet the specific challenge of the day.)

California produce is amazing. NY-based chef David Chang has spoken about how jealous he was about what's available in California. And I'd imagine the Santa Monica farmer's market is a particularly nice one of the farmer's markets in the LA area.
