Even with the photos of Emmett’s body, people were seriously crying “hoax” and “fake news”? And making threatening calls to Mamie, calling her a liar and an “agitator”?

I wish I could say I was shocked.

Well when the Sheriff is the one making the claim, it gives the "hoax" and "fake news" some legitimacy, especially back then.  And people will always believe whatever news source tells them what they want to hear over facts.
