The series does not yet have a title, although some have been calling it Gotham Central, harkening back to the police procedural comic from writers Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka, and GCPD. Either way, it would deal with police detectives working in the shadow of one very batlike vigilante.

Here’s the cool wrinkle: The show will operate in the same story universe as Reeves’ movie, The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson as Batman. It also has Jeffrey Wright in the role of detective or police commissioner James Gordon.

HBO Max says the series will be "set in the world Reeves is creating for The Batman feature film and will build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham."

In between Matt Reeves divulging details about his upcoming 2021 The Batman movie and the trailer drop during DC FanDome tonight, the filmmaker unloaded some intel about the HBO Max series connected to the pic, which he’s executive producing with Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter.

We already knew that the series would be an examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, however, Reeves said the series is a prequel to his Batman Year Two movie, with the show set in Batman Year One when a “masked vigilante…starts to unsettle the city”. The series will zero in on the city’s corruption that “goes back many years,” said Reeves and is told from the POV of a crooked cop.

“The story is actually a battle for his soul,” Reeves explained.

The series, which is also executive produced by The Batman’s Dylan Clark and Warner Bros Television, was first announced back in July. No airdate yet. <...>

Winter is writing the series, and it’s the [] first project for Reeves under his recently announced major overall deal with the Warner Bros Television Group.

Reeves’ 6th & Idaho production company will produce the series in association with WBTV. The drama, which is based on characters created for DC by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, will also be executive produced by 6th & Idaho’s Daniel Pipski and Adam Kassan; Rafi Crohn will co-executive produce. Warner Bros International Television Distribution will distribute the series globally.

Terence Winter Exits 'The Batman' TV Spinoff at HBO Max

The Boardwalk Empire creator, who was poised to write and serve as showrunner on Matt Reeves' TV spinoff of The Batman has departed the HBO Max series. Sources say creative differences are to blame for the split as Winter's vision for the drama did not match what Reeves and other producers had in mind. A search is under way for a new showrunner for the untitled drama.

The upcoming Gotham PD series at HBO Max has found its new showrunner in Joe Barton, Variety has learned.

Barton takes over as executive producer and showrunner on the untitled series from Terrence Winter, whose exit was reported in November. 

Barton previously created and wrote the BBC Two/Netflix drama series “Giri/Haji.” He also previously wrote the feature film “The Ritual.” Most recently he co-wrote the upcoming feature film “Invasion” starring Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer, which will be distributed by Amazon Studios. He is also set to write and executive produce the Netflix drama series “Half Bad,” based on the books by Sally Green.
