My dad and I were just debating seeing it this afternoon, but then I started reading the reviews. Yikes! The one from Military Times is particularly harsh: https://www.militarytimes.com/off-duty/military-culture/2019/11/09/everything-about-blockbuster-midway-sinks-faster-than-japanese-carriers-at-midway/

“If you shell out your hard-earned money to see this film, you are spoiling your own life and ruining the joy of those in your company. Use the 2 hours, 18 minutes to instead do something more enjoyable, like repeatedly smashing your face into a wall.”

If audience reviews end up being better, we’ll go see it next week.

Wow I had a feeling the movie was bad. But that was brutal.

I just saw a movie news YT video from Thursday that talked about the fact that he studio had a review embargo until that morning—not a good sign of studio support for the film. Ticket sales are 60% older men, not a typical opening weekend crowd, so I think the embargo worked on suppressing bad word-of-mouth stopping that crowd from getting out to the theaters. Rotten Tomatoes has critic rating at 41%, but audience rating is 91%. I have a feeling Dad will still want to see it next week.

One review suggested waiting for the Sam Mendes WWI film 1917, coming out in wide release just after New Years.

It's not terrible, though there isn't anything new about it.  Just battle porn.  Though they do a job of trying to present the Japanese as sympathetic (in general).

I do have to laugh at so many patriotic American war movies where their major characters are played by English actors.
