Well. 135 million dollar debut. I'm sure some how there will be more articles talking about how people are tired of marvel and all that!

The film's B+ Cinemascore is bad for a film of this type, for the record, so we'll see how its legs go.

I've only ever had a problem with the comedy undercutting tension and serious moments.

Which is what Marvel does all the time, and that's the main thing they get criticized for.

I get tired of debates over Marvel's humor. The reality is that most crowd pleasers and blockbusters are packed with jokes. Some work and some don't. They may have a higher joke count than some movies but comedy always goes hand and hand with blockbusters.

To the extent that that's the case, it's people copying the current Marvel formula. If you look at Thor: Love and Thunder in comparison to this summer's highest-grossing film, Top Gun: Maverick, for instance, there's a pretty big difference in how it approaches humour and stakes. Or how the MCU formula compares to a lot of the best earlier superhero movies.

One of the reviews I saw on YouTube about Top Gun: Maverick had the folks rolling their eyes that "the enemy" had superior military tech compared to the US.  The reviewer was saying that the US military budget is larger than the budgets of the next 8 countries combined. So that was his one nitpick about the film.  But, as @Raja wrote above, maybe it was due to the specific mission in TG:M that caused the circumstance of superior tech from the enemy...

Yes, the setup is that the F-35 (the American equivalent to the enemy fifth generation planes) is unusable due to GPS jamming, so they have to use older aircraft. The tech disparity is purely situational.

And the mutant characters Wolverine and Storm in particular might sit out a movie to give us the "original" X-Men

I don't think that will ever happen. The original X-Men lineup isn't anywhere close to the most popular iteration of the team (it literally got cancelled), it's devoid of diversity (granted, you could cast your way around that), and has only one woman on the team.

The X-Men have had numerous media adaptations at this point, and none of them have ever used the original lineup as the basis.

A few things that confused me - the kids all seem to think of each other like best friends and family, and yet it was presented that they don't see each other or communicate at all during the year when they aren't together?  Did I miss something?  Susannah's house in Cousins is the family's permanent home, correct (as in, Belly and her brother live in a different town)?  In this age of texting and social media, I would think contact between them would be continuous, even if they don't live by each other.  Belly was unaware of the change in Conrad and no one knew he had quit football.  Odd.

I thought the same thing there. The novel this was based on was published in 2009, which, even then that was into the social media age.

  7. A+ fashion choice from Robin with the combat beret.

I credit the writers, they momentarily made me think they might actually be killing Max. Pretty grisly injuries.

There was speculation about what sort of time jump there's be between seasons, but this ending really doesn't seem like it would be one where they'd just go back to the status quo for very long.

You have to look at the comic book history as a whole, not just one particular era.  By the time the 2000s rolled around, who was A-list or B-list had already been established.  You can go from B-lister to A-lister, but you typically can't go from A-lister to B-lister.

I don't think so. If you dwindle in commercial importance, your status inevitably dwindles with it. That's why the Avengers franchise got that big reboot to try to amp up its importance by adding more popular characters in the mid-2000s, for instance.

It seems like you are classifying the B list in a completely different manner than most.

Every time I have heard them referred to as B-list it is in regards to mainstream consciousness. They may not have been B-list within the comics but the absolutely were with regards to every measure necessary for making a movie. I would say Iron Man, Captain America and Thor were B-list as an IP.

B-list within the comics was a fair assessment around the the 2000s, also. They were getting by on historical importance while being fairly minor commercial properties.

So as to not make the same mistake that Fox did. Some respect should be shown to the source material. The spirit of X-Men does not revolve around Wolverine.  He should not have had the dominating presence that he did in those movies.  It's a product of millennium-era thinking and filmmaking which resulted in that decision.  The MCU is in a position to make better choices, and can now truly put their best foot forward.

I say get the X-Men off the ground first and then bring Wolverine into a sequel if they really must.  As for Jackman comparisons, I think it's best that the MCU make their version of Wolverine completely opposite of what Fox did.  Just redefine him entirely.

If they don't want Wolverine to be the central figure in the new iteration, they can just write it that way. There is no reason not to have him in the movie.

I am sure Wolverine is coming. The only thing that might hold Marvel back is how Jackman basically defined the character for nearly 20 years. Anyone who steps into that role is going to draw a ton of comparison. And Marvel might not want to deal with that. I mean Boseman was only T'challa for like 4 movies and they didn't want to recast. Yes I know he died but a big part was also how he owned that role.

They recast Spider-Man despite Maguire's version of the character being even bigger in terms of commercial success, if obviously not quite as long in tenure, I don't think that's something they'd be worried about.

Wolverine may be the most popular X-Man but is by no means the most important.  He can easily be left out of their introduction.

He could be left out (there are a zillion X-Men characters), but why would you? He's the most popular, and when launching a franchise you put your best foot forward.

It's already been five years since Wolverine appeared in a movie, and will likely be closer to ten by the time an X-Men film is actually made since there are no announced plans for any in the next couple.

Cooper has cast himself as a sort of manic, pixie dream boy, so nice, so cute, so funny! There’s no nuance to him.

I mean, he's kind of self-centered and immature. Just not to some grandiose or self-destructive level.

Anyway, I thought it was a very charming little film. I was a bit thrown by the promos showing Dakota Johnson as the mother of a teenager, but her being a teen mom was actually central to her character, so that checks out.

I don’t understand why an actress agrees to take a role & then is never available.

The actress who played Francesca was only a cameo in the first season, she presumably didn't have any sort of long-term contract at the time, meaning that the show didn't have first claim on her time when filming season 2 if she had auditioned for other stuff.

  15. You kind of have to just go with the flow of this AU history, but all the same, I had a hard time not laughing at all the aristocratic tut-tutting about "political radicals" when George and Charlotte solved racism in the span of a couple of decades. Like, I guarantee whatever they're talking about at Eloise's meetings, it's not as radical as the creation of a completely racially-integrated society.

Based on the cast, I will be cautiously optimistic, and will probably see it if I get the chance.  But I remain skeptical that a sequel was necessary.

Belatedly, but:  Rian Johnson has more detective stories he'd like to tell, and this is a vehicle for that. This makes sense as a franchise as long as he has more ideas he'd like to explore, and since there's no ongoing story or recurring characters it's not like there's any risk of harming the memory of a preceding film.

How good would a Thunderbolts Killmonger be, for instance?

Not, since Killmonger choosing to die at the end of Black Panther leant it much of its impact.

One of the advantages of the MCU is that unlike the comics they don't have to keep every single plate spinning indefinitely, things can have an ending.

It would have been nice if they had Kamala lean into her art and video making more and maybe had her parents accept that that was the direction her life was heading towards.

    But then there's no conflict.

When your scholarship gets yanked for crap grades and you complain that your dad opened the letter. Seriously

That's a pretty basic violation of privacy, and she's going through a hard time at school. Not to mention how he treats her throughout that conversation. I don't see anything there that suggests she's spoiled.

What exactly have Margaret or Martha done that indicates they're spoiled? Their situation is quite sad.
