    Love on the Menu

The love interest one star chef was a jerk about 2/3 of the movie--which isn't attractive. His manager wasn't good as a sidekick, and his professional issues were cringeworthy.

The really annoying thing was the love interest's daughter. I think the scriptwriters and director were going for funny and missed and made her out to be an annoying little snot.

Huh.  I didn't get that at all.  The only time I thought he really behaved badly was when Autumn's character broke the news to him that the deal was over and he reacted badly toward her... but then he apologized right after that.

As for the manager... that didn't bother me because, unless I misunderstood, he took over after his sister died and was just in way over his head.

I also didn't think the daughter was an annoying little snot either.  I liked her scenes with Autumn's character.  It was totally believable to me that a teenage girl who had lost her mother would bond with Autumn's character and would be excited to have some female guidance.  I liked that aspect.

I just finished Love on the Menu. Admittedly, I am an Autumn Reeser fan girl and have been happy that her past few movies do not rely on the typical Hallmark misunderstanding that usually drives the protagonists to get together at the last minute of the movie.

Overall, I thought the movie was good. I liked the kitchen/food prep and the table prep scenes. I liked that their first kiss and then other cute moments occurred well before the end of the movie. It’s nice when Hallmark doesn’t follow their usual troupe of saving the first kiss for the end.

I was a bit annoyed by her boss becoming a big bad out of nowhere.  Maggie worked with her boss for how long and this was the first time her boss moved on to a new project? Not likely.  Hank and the boss fulfilled their contractual obligations. Moving on to a new chef is business.

I think that storyline could have handled it better. I also fan girl for Teryl Rothery and would have loved aspects of her character from All for Love to have been used for the storyline: more logical and understanding. “You have spent a lot of time with Hank and don’t have the heart for frozen food anymore? This is a business that I need to run. How about you think if you want to stay with us or return to your roots of managing restaurants?” An outright firing seemed a bit drastic for the slow-moving movie.

I didn’t think Hank was a jerk for the much of the movie. He definitely was after the initial contract agreement, particularly when Maggie did her introduction in the kitchen. Other than that, I thought Kavan portrayed Hank well, from  his initial resistance, to dropping his walls and then accepting Maggie into his life.

I thought the boss was unnecessarily bitchy from her first scene, so it seemed well-telegraphed to me.  Also, I don't think Teryl was in this movie... the boss was played by Barbara Niven.

Anyway... these movies are mostly hit and miss for me, but I actually ended up enjoying this one.  (Although it was a little slow and boring too, if I'm being honest.)  I really liked Autumn and Kavan together and I liked how their friendship developed and then turned romantic at a normal pace throughout the movie.  (No insta-love/let's get married or a couple who hate each other suddenly realizing they actually love each other.)  Having their first kiss happen earlier than most of these movies was nice too.

The negative for me was the business stuff - I never totally understood what their agreement actually was.  But they signed a contract so the terms should have been clear.  I read reviews here before I watched it though, and I think it actually made it easier for me to ignore the poorly written business details.

I probably won't watch it again, but it was a pleasant diversion for an hour and a half.

Finally got around to finishing “A Perfect Bride: Happily Ever After.” Meh. First I was annoyed that their whole relationship seemed to be about joking around. Actress basically giggled through the entire movie. Secondly, terrible idea to work with the ex. How long had it been since the incident? And the photographer didn’t have enough cohones to tell her it was a bad idea. Thirdly, the bad advice of the friends who convinced the couple that everything needed to be perfect. And then in the end, they were all surprised at the post-poning. Thanks for nothing sister. Also, did he take the 20k job? He should have. I’m glad they still went through with it BUT OF COURSE everything magically wrapped up perfectly in the last 15 minutes. Also, didn’t seem like they were that stressed out about things.

I haven't watched Love on the Menu yet, but I did see the two Kavan Smith movies that were re-broadcast this weekend - The Perfect Bride and its sequel The Perfect Bride: Wedding Bells - and I agree with the criticism I bolded above.  It was very annoying to watch them being so ridiculous about having to have everything perfect for their wedding, to the point that they decided to postpone it two days before.  That was in large part so that the bride to be could have her 'perfect' wedding dress, which was so silly. -- She's a beautiful fitness instructor and looked absolutely gorgeous in the dress she finally settled for... but then, while admiring the dress in the mirror, Ms. Eagle-Eyes sees a reflection of a store employee wheeling by a couple pieces of fabric and sketches for the most generic-looking strapless wedding dress I've ever seen... and OMG!!! it's her dream dress!!  But 'Oh no's, it won't be ready in time!' so she'll have to settle for the gorgeous dress that is super-flattering on her.  I need to go find my violin.

So they cancel the wedding two days before - never mind all their guests that made travel arrangements and planned time out of their schedules... and then the next day, they finally start to get a clue that actually marrying your true love might be a little more important than making sure every single detail is absolutely perfect... so the wedding is back on, everybody!  We hope you didn't cancel you flights and hotel reservations!!

Bride is now ecstatic because the dress shop made her dream dress (which looks just like all the other ubiquitous strapless wedding dresses) in time after all, but she shouldn't be so excited because it looks incredibly frumpy and dumpy and makes her perfect bod look anything but perfect.  Yay, karma!

Ugh.  Sorry for the rant.  I just had to get that off my chest.  I probably should avoid wedding-related movies all together because I have such low tolerance for wedding-related nonsense.  I don't understand why people make such a huge deal out of something that lasts a few hours.  To me, the marriage is the important thing.

Anyway... Kavan Smith and Pascale Hutton were cute together though and there weren't the typical villians or misunderstandings - so that at least made it somewhat tolerable.

Meemaw and her flag waving made me laugh.  Yes, it was ridiculous and kinda cringe-worthy,  but it was still funny to me. Especially when she stopped singing and said "screw you!" to the guy driving by.

That made me laugh too!  And although I agree that the town's reaction was way over the top and unbelievable, and Meemaw's flag waving was also over the top... it still made me laugh when they kept cutting back to her, and her "Screw you!", without missing a beat, was hilarious.

I love Cooper too.  I think he's my favorite part of this show.  I love how he is privileged and completely clueless as to how average people live, but isn't arrogant or nasty about it.  He's always upbeat and wants to be helpful.  I thought it was also sad that he was so eager to be punished.  Yep, punishment is a form of love, kid, and you're craving it.  "Ohhh Busboyyyy!"

Same here.  He's so sweet and genuine.  The actor just nails that role.  Poor Cooper B - so desperate for parental caring - he's like an eager puppy.

I liked this episode, especially all the sibling stuff.

I find it annoying when characters who are in the same place at the same time are dressed for completely different weather. One is wearing a sleeveless light top and the other is wearing a long sleeve turtle neck sweater. Why do they do that? I thought costuming for TV was done by professional wardrobe people. I agree with the outside yards and trees matching the season the episode is set in.

Wardrobe consistency would be good, but then again... in previous offices in which I worked I would be bundled up in layers of thick sweaters, sitting next to a space heater and shivering, while others in the same space would be sweating in light, sleeveless tops and complaining it was too hot.  And it's not unusual for me to be out for a walk or running errands this time of year wearing substantial a typical winter coat, scarf, gloves etc... and I see people (usually males) here and there outside wearing shorts.

I was waiting for this one with interest, because I suspected Will Kemp could do a lot more than he had to do with the Prince character in the Royal Matchmaker one.  He really brought it !   (Don't know if anybody mentioned that of course he was essentially a ballet dancer, and his first notice by the greater public (in England) was a commercial for Levis in which he danced like a maniac -)   The Matchmaker thing really restricted him in every sense, but this one was delightful.  My IMDB says also he did a period thing where he was Lord Darnley -- so he's got range.

On top of that the backgrounds were really enjoyable.    And, altho they had to use the "love interest mis-interprets seeing lady with other fellow ..", they at least avoided the "bumping into each other and spilling coffee."  Points for that.   My point is -- really enjoyed Will Kemp.

Do you mean this Gap ad?  Or is there another old commercial featuring Will Kemp dancing?

I looked him up and saw that he was in Kristin's Christmas Past, with Shiri Appleby, and he was very cute in that movie.

I haven't watched Love, Romance and Chocolate yet, but I recorded it mainly for the location stuff... so I'm glad to read that at least some people enjoyed it.

I watched A Harvest Wedding, which was from 2017, starring Jill Wagner as a wedding planner... and I loved this rust colored coat she wore in several scenes.  Are there any websites that list clothes worn in Hallmark movies, like they do for wardrobe items in various television shows?  It's probably too late to find that particular item, or anything else Jill wore in that movie (she had a lot of cute outfits!)... but I've been wondering for a while if there are any Hallmark fashion websites.

@LuvMyShows -- the misunderstanding thing is typical for Hallmark, and it's not only women who do it. Usually, the woman's soon-to-be-ex boyfriend will show up and propose. New guy will watch from a distance and take off, only to have the woman find him later and explain that she declined the proposal.

Not defending the gimmick, just explaining that "misunderstanding" is one of the plot boxes that frequently gets checked off in a Hallmark romance.

I was going to post the same thing, so thanks for saving me the trouble. 🙂

I watched Valentine in the Vineyard the other night and enjoyed it.  I like the first of the series, but didn't care for the second because of all the secret-keeping nonsense and the idiotic behavior of the male protagonist in never actually checking himself whether the wine was actually ready before signing up their fledgling vineyard to host the big event.  I like the cast of the series though and the scenery is beautiful... so it was nice enough to watch for an hour and a half.

I haven't posted here for a while, and I've watched quite a few older Hallmark movies recently.  Here's a quick synopsis:

I liked All of My Heart, with Lacey Chabert and Brennan Elliott who each inherit half of the same house in Bucks County PA.  It was quite amusing and had some nice secondary characters - i.e. the tall guy at the hardware store who was funny.

Love at First Glance - Amy Smart did the best she could in the role, but I hated that the love interest was presented to be a ridiculously perfect person, and she falls in love with him to the point of having a break down when she was late for their first meeting because she loves him so much!  And the ridiculousness of Perfect Guy being in love with her too even though they never even met and he barely knew anything about her.

I also hated The Convenient Groom starring David Sutcliffe (who was fine) and Vanessa Marcil who drove me crazy with her horrible vocal fry and bad acting.  (There was some other very bad acting in the movie too, so perhaps the director bears some responsibility too.)

I did however really enjoy Valentine Ever After with Autumn Reeser, whose character was forced to perform community service at a horse ranch in Montana.  Autumn is a very dependable, likable actress and she had nice chemistry with her co-star Eric Johnson.  (I liked the mom in that movie too.)

Anything for Love, with Erika Christensen and Paul Greene, was pretty good, except for the disparaging attitudes toward and about male R.N.s which was just silly.  I don't think I had ever seen Paul Greene before in anything, but he was very likable.  Plus we got Ali Liebert as Erika's character's assistant, which was fun.

Last but not least was Love by Chance, which I just watched last night.  I think I liked it more than I probably should have - because of Brenda Strongs' performance as the meddling mom, and because Benjamin Ayres was pretty awesome as the smitten pediatrician.  The only big negative was that the idiot lead female character was willing to dump her perfect match, who is a wonderful guy, just because her mother arranged for them to both be at a gallery event so they could meet.  Way to blow things out of proportion!  Other than that though, I enjoyed it.

My favorite little exchange (of many!) in this episode was when Frank says about Timmy "That kid really gets my goat!" and Joey says something like, "Really? 'Cause I can help you with that.  Goat retrieval is, like, 80% of what I do."

It was nice to see a Joey/Frank pairing in this episode.  Many of us have said we looked forward to different pairings and interactions and I think that will keep this show fresh.

Thanks, I loved his reply.  It was so perfectly Joey.

Should vaulted content that I've followed appear on my customized homepage? The various shows appear on the Forums tab under Manage Followed Content, but not on my homepage. Thanks.

I've been wondering the same thing.  I expected the topics I follow to be listed on my custom home page, but I only have the forums I follow listed there.  I still have to go to the Followed Content page to see the list of topics I'm following.

I did laugh during the argument about petty annoyances, because so many of them were so familiar.  I get onto my husband all the time for not screwing caps on all the way (or fully sealing ziplocks, or pushing the tab thingie in on boxes... basically nothing in our house is ever closed properly), and I am totally guilty of putting trash in the car door compartment.

I could relate too.  I really liked that part of the episode.

Ok two topics but this is has most eye icons so I’m going in on it.

I loved this episode.  I thought they handled the topic really well.  It wasn’t preachy but they handled both sides well.  Watching Mike throwing up after hearing both sons being drafted and hearing Peggy’s voice waver talking about her boys made me tear up.

Lawrence  reasoning for joining up rang true to his seminary teaching IMO.  My brother was in the seminary in the 2000s but left because he couldn’t compromise a lot of his values (we grew up liberal Catholic and he wanted to get married) with what was being taught.  But the value of helping out your fellow man and sacrificing for others is paramount in him and in Lawrence .  Lawrence grew up a lot in this episode.  I finally got him.

Same here.  This was a complicated topic, and they came through with an episode that was both thoughtful and moving, but still had plenty of laughs too.  Fantastic episode!

Side note:  My mom also ran over my brother (his foot) back in the seventies... but it wasn't to get him out of the draft.  Just a dumb accident - brother getting out of the car before it was completely stopped, if I recall correctly.

  16. Somebody else started a Vietnam thread. (Two actually - it looks like it posted twice.)  I was going to start the new thread for tonight's episode Sunday night... but TVguide and IMDB were both listing Vietnam as the next episode, while both ABC and TitanTV were listing Valentine's Day.  While looking into the discrepancy, I realized that the episode numbering of the last several episodes I had started had been wrong.  (I just got the descriptions and episode numbers from TVGuide.)  So I flagged one of my posts to have them corrected.  I'm not surprised the Mod went with ABC's schedule listing for this thread - one would think ABC would know what they were planning to broadcast and have their website listings accurate.  It's kind of ridiculous that you can't count on the network to get the episode schedule right.

We don't see the terrorizing much but I think it's pretty clear that Georgie has been a jerk to Sheldon for years.  And considering the age and size difference I can't really blame Sheldon for taking advantage of being a bully's friend to get his own back on Georgie.

    That's a good point.

I also found Tommy the "bully" interesting in that he seemed like a decent kid in his interactions with Sheldon.  Actually, I'm not so sure Tommy was a real bully.  Although he seemed like it in his first interaction with Georgie, he later told Sheldon it was because Georgie was a punk.  (And also because he hit on his girlfriend.  I'm not a fan of the macho thing, but at least he had some provocation.)   The other kid seemed much more of a true bully.

To be honest I think it's saying they know they ran out of stories and should have stopped before now!  I a;ways respected the people behind Everybody Loves Raymond who not only pulled the plug on the 9th season but made it a short season with a lot fewer episodes because they said they knew they were done.  Too bad the people behind BBT decided as long as the money was coming in they weren't going to stop.  I've been among those who've liked BBT (overall) in these last few years - with last year being especially good- but I concede that this year has been, to be kind, spotty at best.

When they announced it I was sad because it seemed like they were still turning out funny, well-done episodes.  The last few have seemed sub-par though, I think, and I do wonder how much of that is because the writers are focused on lining up their next jobs at this point.   I think The Middle suffered from a big decline in its last season as well... probably for the same reason.

Yeah, I remember thinking the same when 'Vermont' came out. Been there, done that Hallmark. But surprisingly I ended up really liking Falling For Vermont much more than A Christmas to Remember (which I saw, like once or twice). The characters and setting were much more charming in the former and I tend to like Julie Gonzalo's Hallmark stuff (though The Sweetest Heart is a little iffy. More so for the story and lead guy than anything.)

I just watched Falling for Vermont and, like you MissyPoo, ended up really liking it, in spite of its similarities to A Christmas to Remember.  I loved the setting... and I'm finding that movies set in non-snowy seasons are very appealing during a cold and sometimes snowy winter.
