  1. Good episode, if not too much of deus ex machina. My regret is that the ending means that the last 1-1/2 episodes have been for nothing, except that Joel and Ellie now lost their vehicle and almost all of their supplies.

So how is it explained that virtually all infected in the city are contained in the basement of that particular house? And what is the big boss infected? What kind of infection that mutated it that way?

  2. There are many things that do not make sense in this first episode.

    • Engineering design: Why escape hatches are equipped with passcode? Why is there no automatic reanimating procedure if the automated system detects error?
    • Military: Why are there questions about who is in charge? Militaries all around the world are very clear about chain of command and seniority. It is usually ranks, positions, dates of ranks.
    • Behavior: In the very moment that their collective lives is in jeopardy, and the very first reaction is to be bitches with each other? They are not passengers in a cruise ship.

  3. This is the series finale, is it not? No? Well, it is for me. I like Katheryn Winnick and I do hope that she is cast for bigger things in the future, but this show is ain't it. Even she cannot hold it any longer for me.

Three seasons in the books, we still do not know who Trooper Legarski worked for. As well, the Bhullars case is still wide open. Enough already. Not to mention all the nonsense with the Sherriff Department. A department which working members are only the Sherriff himself and two deputies.

Specifically for this episode, so in Helena, MT, one can just go to a closed repair shop, and there will be a fuel tank to fill up freely?

  4. While the format of the series and the story of this episode are interesting, I feel that the legal angle in this episode is shit. IANAL, of course. Even if it was pre-trial, how did Scott get charged? He had no knowledge of Devin's activities and Devin deliberately misrepresented the purpose of the money.

  5. Detective Jet Slootmaekers, what can she not do? She is a hacker extraordinaire, excellent in multimedia manipulation and she personally has all the equipment, expert in system controls and instrumentation, a fully trained Police detective, and now knowledgeable in building M&E system. Let us wait what other super powers she has.

Think of all the opportunities back in 10K BC, though.  Set up in the Exiles' village, and tell them "Look, what I have here, let's call it a 'bank'.  You bring those black rocks to me and leave them here on, eh, 'deposit'.  I'll sell them to the wackdoodles in the Tower for all kinds of stuff, and pay you off in more rocks.  Then, if you maybe need some rocks at the end of the month, I'll be glad to 'loan' you some rocks at a slight 'interest'.  What's interest?  Don't worry."

Considering that Paraa's tribe and the Exiles seem unfazed with the modern people and their devices, I think there is reason to believe that they are either modern people themselves, or close descendants of modern people, who chose to live in that era.

I think a lot people would choose to start over and at least have a chance of a good, safe, life. Not much different than the migrants who come to the US seeking a better life. If I had my loved ones with me, I’d definitely choose modern times over 10,000 BC.

But if they went back to 10k BCE*, they would have the opportunity to go back to 2022, as the apparatus for time travel was there. If they stayed in 1988, nobody would be there anymore, they would be stuck there without anything substantial.

*All the time travel in this show was always to the precise time around 10 000 BCE. Why everybody, especially the scientists, kept on referring that point as 'ten thousand BC' instead of the exact year?

Not just a promotion but a jump over all the Lieutenants and Captains to Deputy Inspector is promised to her.

I know that this L&O:OC is the one with the biggest artistic license compared to the other two in L&O franchise, but this is for me one of the biggest, if not the biggest, WTF moments in the whole series. NYPD officers spend years or even decades as Lieutenant and Captain, and Sgt. Bell just skips those altogether.

  9. Let us stay in 1988 as a family! Yay! Even though we do not the small things like... all civil documentation? No job, no money, no home, not a single credential to prove who they are, their civil status, their academic or professional credential. But hey, if it is on TV who needs those pesky things, amirite?

  10. $50M for 10 years? There is only one person north of U.S. - Mexico border makes that kind of money playing soccer.

Fin: "We want to ask you questions."

Witness: "But I signed an NDA."

Fin: "What about off the record?"

    Witness: "Okay then."

That is not how NDA works. Unless the subject is illegal, non-disclosure is non-disclosure, on the record or otherwise.

Some of us have been having those "boundary issues" for a while over in the Ghostly Incongruities thread:

(Mentioning that here since it helps keep the discussion all in one place rather than scattered across the individual episode threads.)

This is exactly. The logic is what the writers decide it is logic. Flower and Hetty can sit on a washing machine and have their bodies shaken by the machine. Why do they not phase down to the tub?

Functional responsibility is an interesting concept. Occasionally on The Closer/Major Crimes you had the lower ranking specialty officer put the higher ranks in check. But the ESU Captain did seem too strident in not wanting the Deputy Inspector as another trained negotiator to try to talk the suspect down.  At least during the surrender they didn't go as far as happened on the vigilante show an hour before with a similar surrender scenario.

I need to question though, does rank not matter in the NYPD? Yes to functional responsibility, but the incident happened in the Deputy Inspector's AOR. Should the ESU, and the Captain, not be under the DI's command as she was senior to the Captain? But this command and control aside, was there no courtesy to the senior rank? The Captain called the Deputy Inspector by her last name alone, without her rank.

Kudos to Officer Quinlan to be able to change from uniform to civilian clothes then to uniform then to civilian clothes so quickly, even her hair was in regulation.

And they took from us the joy of seeing Officer Ruhl blew above legal limit and got promptly arrested? Oy, vey.

  13. So the U.S. Navy staged the assault in an airport or airbase in or around Toronto? I thought Canada was neutral in this United States - Gilead conflict? Otherwise, Canada would be a belligerent party to Gilead and all Gileadians in Canada would be considered hostile. Since Gileadians could enter Canada, and Gilead could establish a mission in Toronto, they were at peace with Canada.

Who was Mark Tuello? He claimed to be an agent for the United States government, but he apparently had command authority to a military mission?

Who were the Wheelers? Since they did not answer to Gildean Commanders, were they Canadians? If they were not Giledians with diplomatic immunity in Canada, how did they do their Giledian lifestyle in Canadian soil? That was also including building a private army in Canada.

And BTW, Commander Lawrence directed this episode? Good job nevertheless.

  14. The stupid in this episode... it hurts...

In the whole city of Helena, the capital city of a state, the only law enforcement available (federal, state, county, municipal) for a potential bank robbery and kidnap of an officer was Hoyt and Arlen? And what kind of stupid, small-time criminals kidnapped an LEO, in uniform no less? Even if they managed to get away this time, they would spend their (short) life on the run.

I am a die-hard Katheryn Winnick fan, and that is why I am following this show. But 2-1/2 seasons in, I think I am exhausted. I am tired of the show opening multiple story lines and leaving plenty of loose ends behind, unsolved. We do not even know up to this episode who Trooper Legarski was working for.

  15. Gilead geography and governing structure confuse me. Unless of course this story happens in an alternate universe and they are all located in Middle-Earth or Westeros.

What areas of the current United States that Gilead control? So far we see that most of the story happens in and around Boston. We also see that from Boston Gilead extends to Chicago and to the District of Columbia. If Gilead is centered around Boston, the logical place for the refugees to gather is Montreal, not Toronto. This show makes it that Toronto to Gilead area where Lawrence and Blaine are is just a stone's throw away.

Where is New Bethlehem then? Where is the island community in the United States enough to handle all the return refugees? I suppose that the refugees fleeing Gilead would be in the hundreds of thousand if not millions considering the atrocities that Gilead commits.

About governance, I always thought that commanders that we saw, Waterford, Putnam, Lawrence, Blaine, were local commanders. There were national, higher-level commanders, I thought. Just like Commander Elliot Stabler in DC. But now Lawrence admitted that Gilead was his creation and he was able to make policy decision for Gilead?

The Wheelers is another element that confuses me. How do they do what they do Gilead-style on Canadian soil? Does Canada not recognize Serena as the baby's mother? As well, they manage to have an armed army in Canada?

  16. Did Kevin die at all? If Kevin did not die, that could be the biggest 'fuck you' Kevin gave Allison. Allison asked for a divorce, Kevin burned their marital home down, so Allison did not get anything from the divorce. Insurance would not pay as it was deliberate.
