  1. I just read that Disney is giving Marvel the Star Wars comic license. So, all these series will be wrapping up before (I think) 2015. Time will tell if Marvel can live up to some of the cool things that Dark Horse has done.

  2. I have started going to comicvine.com to read some reviews. I listen to their podcast which is long (2 - 3 hours a week) and I have gotten lots of recommendations from there.

It sounds like you are reading the ones I would recommend like Saga and Hawkeye.

I like superhero comics. Some of the ones that are pretty good right now:

    • Ultimate Comics Spider-Man : some stuff happened and a new young kid named Miles Morales took over being Spider-Man.
    • Daredevil: the current run has great art and it's a more upbeat than that character usually is. If you liked Hawkeye, try this also.
    • Batwoman : not really a huge part of the Batman universe so you don't have to worry about crossovers.
    • Alex+Ada: a new one about a guy that was given a sex android as a gift, more serious than it sounds. jury still out for me on this one
    • Pretty Deadly: i just started but I hear good things about this one. It's a western.
  3. EricJ - I agree about the illusion of intimacy. There are a group of podcasters that my wife and I have followed for years. We refer to them in conversations by first name as if they are our friends. We have met them a few times at events and then awkward reality sets in that they have no clue who we are at all.

  4. I'm a Gamma Ray Monster.  I got my wife playing this weekend and she headed to the Math and Spelling games. Those are not for me. I need to figure out how to add some of y'all to my list of friends on there. She kicked my butt in Logos also because she knows cars and shoes. I got Burger King right.

  5. Overall, I liked it as much or better than some of the Christmas specials. I think I understood all that they were trying to cram in as throwaway lines about the Silence and the TARDIS blowing up. I think Capaldi was great in his brief appearance and Matt played a good old man.

But the one thing I HATE from Moffat is his constant use of characters actually saying "Doctor who?" over and over. No need for that for the first 48 or so years, don't know why we get it so much now.

Another question, when the Angel grabbed Clara, why wasn't she sent back in time? They don't all have that power, is that it?

Bits that made me smile that were kind of silly: when the Doctor meets Clara's fam in his non-clothes, Clara's using of the TARDIS as an oven, the wooden cyberman

I will probably have more to say after a re-watch, but I hope with Capaldi, the mystery is not about the Doctor or timey-wimey or Daleks, but something new and sinister.

  6. I've had the rhyming one on the DVR since it aired and I have just been skipping over it. It sounded annoying and I have always found something on that seems more enjoyable (which lead to back-to-back episodes of "Deep Fried Masters), so I may never ever watch it.

Slap looks good and then I am kind of ready to wrap this thing up.

  7. I've always been intrigued by the mess hall on Star Trek : The Next Generation because you could get an incredibly mediocre version of anything in the world made out of (what I assume is) some sort of recycled waste. YUM!

  8. A few in no real order:

    • Extra Hot Great : which due to my mumbling of what I was listening to, my wife refers to as "Wet Hot Gravy"
    • Dan Carlin's Hardcore History : these take me days to listen to and I feel all smart afterwards
    • Stuff Mom Never Told You : being a guy, mom told me none of this, but my friend is a host, so I enjoy it
    • Comic Vine Podcast : a very meandering journey through the current week's comics
    • Tech News Today : keeps me up to date on tech news so I can sound like I know what I am talking about at work

I did a massive clear out of my Downcast app when my phone ran out of room, so there used to be a lot more.

  9. I downloaded this and did try some of the Doctor Who ones and did incredibly bad considering I have watched since the early 1980s.  I think the Comic Book Superheroes tucked away under Literature may be my go-to quiz topic. I sucked at Game of Thrones because it involved knowing actors, not just who killed whom. I'm Spynotebook on game center and might brush up and challenge joshleejosh to some Doctor Who.

  10. I'll probably read both of these over the Christmas break at my in-laws.

The only thing I know about THE Star Wars is that Han Solo looks like Swamp Thing.  So, I'm curious.

  11. I was born in 1970 but have only ever been a casual gamer. That being said, I got most of the references and enjoyed this book. I know others that have read and it without knowing anything about games and still enjoyed it.

There was a time when Douglas Coupland books seemed to appeal to me. Generation X was one of the first books I remember "getting" the references because I watched a lot of TV in the 70s and 80s. But then he kind of lost me when he wrote the book filled with all the Smiths references.
