Last Sunday’s premiere of ‘Worst Cooks in America’ with Alex Guarnaschelli as co-host/mentor broke some records, none of them good: it was the lowest rated non-celebrity season premiere ever (even lower than Alton Brown’s), the lowest rated premiere ever in demo and the lowest rated premiere on the show's current Sunday night timeslot. It’s also the second lowest rated premiere ever, being the lowest celebrity Season 11 with Rachael Ray co-hosting (1.13M/0.39 on Wednesday, August 23, 2017). As 'Worst Cooks' is about to start its 20th season, celebrity season #19's finale last Sunday was down 12 percent in viewers and 18% demo from last year's (1.29M/0.33 on June 2nd, 2019). Overall, 2020's 'Worst Cooks: Celebrity' was down only 1% percent in viewers and 10% demo from 2019. Last year, in the 'Buddy vs Duff' battle of single shows, Duff's 'Duff Takes the Cake' won overwhelmingly over Buddy's 'Bake You Rich'. This year, it was a different story as 'Duff Takes the Cake' premiered to disappointing numbers, down 37% in viewers and 28% demo from last season (910,000/0.25 on April 16th, 2019), while Buddy's 'Big Time Bake's premiere numbers were higher than Duff's, while not near the ratings from 'Bake You Rich's premiere (878,000/0.28 on April 15th, 2019), even with tons of promotion on most Discovery networks. Speaking of the Discovery networks, Oprah Winfrey's 'Where Do We Go From Here?' pair of specials, had dismal numbers over most of the company's group of networks and most likely and if nothing changes, would end as Food Network's lowest rated specials for the year. Coming after a highly rated ‘Restaurant Impossible’ ep., new docuseries ‘Summer Rush’ premiered to a paltry 535,000 viewers/0.16 demo, the second lowest rated new show opener of the year so far, surpassing fellow time slot occupant ‘Opening Night’ (which lasted one episode) by 2,000 viewers. Although its commendable that FN airs other type of programming so they can’t rely so heavily on Guy Fieri’s shows, their track record on docuseries/reality shows is poor: only ‘Ace of Cakes’, ‘Private Chefs of Beverly Hills’, ‘Mystery Diners’ and ‘Restaurant Stakeout’ come to mind as successes, while they've had a lot of failures over the years like: ‘Meat Men’, ‘Bama Glama’, ‘Bubba Q’, ‘Tough Cookies’, ‘Three Chocolatiers’, ‘Have Cake, Will Travel’, ‘Big Momma’s Kitchen’, ‘Family Style’, ‘Ice Brigade’, ‘The Chef Jeff Project’, ‘Texas Cake House’ and many more. 'Bakeaway Camp with Martha Stewart' ended its 4 episode season with an average 813,000 viewers/0.18 demo. Not a flop, but not impressive either, considering Stewart's name and if the network's intentions were to create a 'baking championship' franchise. 'Amy Schumer Learns to Cook' has to be one of the FN's biggest disappointments, averaging 662,000 viewers, heavily promoted among all Discovery networks with a well-known celebrity starring. Having said that, it wasn't much of a failure in terms of demo (powered mostly by young female viewers), currently standing at #7 among the 15 new shows that have premiered so far this year. 'Restaurant Impossible' was the most watched show this past week. So far, its been one of the most stable shows on FN, having dropped only 5% in viewers and its even in demo from its most recent aired season. 'Questlove's Potluck' tanked, with less than 500,000 viewers and a pretty low 0.13 demo. 'Restaurant Impossible's premiere was pretty stable season to season: just 4% down in viewers and demo from the previous one (1.11M/0.25 on 12/26/2019). Primetime's 'Worst Cooks: Celebrity' was the most watched show for the week, as daytime's numbers were down across the board from previous weeks, as people started to end their quarantines and some outside activities have been relaxed. Let's see if this trend continues or if it was a one week occurrence. As expected, 'Opening Night' didn't do well, just as its two pilot episodes last year, and now is FN's lowest rated new show premiere for the year, bumping 'Vegas Chef Prizefight' and 'Amy Schumer Learns to Cook'. Speaking of Schumer...week 2's ratings for her show and 'Bakeaway Camp with Martha Stewart' were up: 9 percent in viewers and 25% demo for Martha and 13% in viewers and 9% demo for Schumer, whose show once again was mostly powered by young female viewers. Two episodes in, with 726,000 viewers/0.22 average, Schumer is close to match in viewership what 'Chopped Sweets' did at this point in the timeslot (752,000/0.20) and has surpassed it in demo. Coming off from its lowest rated season ever, 'Worst Cooks' (without Alton Brown) returned Sunday night to its reliable ratings strength, off just a percent in viewers and 5% in demo from last celebrity season's premiere (1,370,000/0.37 on 4/22/2019). Regardless, as it happened in January, 'Worst Cooks' lost to 'The Kitchen' for top show of the week. Last night's (Mon. 5/11) two new shows had very disappointing premiere results: 'Bakeaway Camp with Martha Stewart' didn't have baking championship numbers whatsoever with just 783,000 viewers and 0.16 demo. An hour later, 'Amy Schumer Learns to Cook',with 681,000 viewers and 0.21 demo, had the second worst premiere rating of the year, after 'Vegas Chef Prizefight'. The show, which outraged FN viewers on its social media platforms ahead of the premiere, did very well with young adult women and teenage girls, reaching #13 out of the top 50 cable originals for the day. It didn't do well with men, adults 25-54 and people over 50. This week, the season premiere of the even more emotional 'Restaurant Impossible' and 'Opening Night'. As it happened last week, Robert Irvine's special 1st episode 'RI' rewatch with his wife and another installment of his pilot 'Kitchen Expedition', tanked in the ratings. Monday 5/4's season 6’s finale of ‘Spring Baking Championship’ at 1.31 million viewers/0.29 demo was only 4 percent down in viewers and 6% demo from season 5’s (1.37M/0.31 on 5/6/2019). On average, S6 (1.29M/0.28) was even with viewers and 17% down in demo from last year's (1.28M/0.34). ‘Buddy vs Duff’s season 2 finale was down 20% in viewers and a big 28% in demo from S1 (1.86M/0.53 on 4/15/2019). After a weak start, losing a quarter of its audience and a third of its demo, by midseason, the gentler, kinder series picked up steam, ending with 1.33M/0.36, losing 15% in viewers and 20% demo from 2019 (1.57M, 0.45). Audience grew season to season (9.43 to 10.66M), but it was because S2 had 8 episodes, compared to S1’s 6 so, the additional couple episodes only brought about 600,000 viewers per episode, not that good. Robert Irvine’s ‘Restaurant Impossible’ quarantine special and his ‘Follow that Food’ like pilot called ‘Kitchen Expedition’ bombed Thursday night. We’ll see how a new special, featuring him and his wife watching the very first episode of ‘Restaurant Impossible’ does this Thursday. The newest installment of ‘The Kitchen: Quarantine Edition’ beat the next to last episode of ‘Buddy vs Duff’ by a small margin. The second episode of ‘Pioneer Woman: Staying Home’ helped daytime to take 3 out of the top 5 most watched shows for the week. Given the fact that it was endlessly promoted among all Discovery networks, the first of three ‘DDD: Take-Out’ episodes, had great but not spectacular ratings Friday night, as also some regular ‘DDD’ reruns got better ratings Sunday afternoon. As last night's next to last episode of 'Spring Baking Championship' had 1.43 million viewers/0.25 demo, it's expected that this Sunday's 'Buddy vs Duff' finale will get big numbers, against more quarantine 'The Kitchen' & 'Pioneer Woman' shows. Ratings for the finale of the first spring 'Great Food Truck Race' at 967,000 viewers/0.26 demo gave it a 966,000/0.25 average for the 6 episode season, way up from the 701,000/0.21 avg. of the 'Great Food Truck Race: Holiday' but 7% down in viewers and 17% in demo from the last season that aired on Thursday nights (1.05M/0.30 in summer 2018). Given the results, people aren't willing to watch 3 seasons of 'GFTR' a year, especially during the holiday season. In ratings results for this past week...for the first time in 16 weeks, when ‘Holiday Baking Championship’ topped the weekly ratings, a prime time show was the most watched original program. It's 6 episode season averaged 707,000 viewers/0.17 demo; so far, its FN's least watched new show of the year and, those numbers most likely don't guarantee a second season. Meanwhile, 'Chopped's latest stunt to grab higher ratings, 'Beat the Judge' worked: the last time an episode of 'Chopped' had a million viewers or more was on March 19th, 2019. Never underestimate the power of Magnolia. Sunday's 'In The Kitchen with Joanna Gaines' special topped 'The Kitchen' for FN's most watched show of the week, the first that includes ratings for the 2Q that started Wednesday. It was the first time since February 22, 2016 with an episode of 'Kids Baking Championship' (2.28M) that a show on FN was watched by 2 million viewers or more. There were other times when shows like 'Food Network Star' and 'Holiday Baking Championship' in 2017 or the 'Halloween Wars' premiere in 2018 were close of reaching the 2M mark but came short. It it weren't for the Gaines' special, 'The Kitchen' would have been the top show for the 14th week in a row as it barely beat the 'Tournament of Champions' finale. ‘The Kitchen’ was FN’s most watched/highest rated show in viewers for the first quarter of 2020, a first for a daytime show. In 3Q 2014 and 4Q 2016, ‘Pioneer Woman’ was barely beaten for most watched show by ‘Chopped Tournament’ (the Sunday 9P game show at the time) and ‘Clash of the Grandmas’, respectively. ‘The Kitchen’ was the most watched show every week of the quarter, beating tentpoles like ‘Worst Cooks’, ‘Kids Baking Championship’, ‘Buddy vs Duff’ and ‘Spring Baking Championship’. ‘The Kitchen’ also cracked the top 10 highest rated shows in demo 18-49, beating long running ‘GGG’, ‘Chopped’ and ‘Beat Bobby Flay’. For the week, it was beaten by 'The Kitchen' (which was the network's most watched show for eleven weeks in a row), 'Pioneer Woman' and a 'DDD' rerun at 5P (1.21M); even 'Girl Meets Farm' came close to beat it too. Last night's season finale of 'Restaurant Impossible' did 1.05 million viewers/0.24 demo. Out of 12 episodes, the highest rated was on Jan 23 (1.17M/0.30) and the lowest on Feb 20 (957,000/0.20); half of its episodes were watched by more than a million viewers. So far in the quarter, its the third highest rated primetime series and number one on weekday primetime; its first run episodes were watched by 11.3 million viewers total (third only to 'The Kitchen' and 'Beat Bobby Flay') and its the primetime series with the lowest drop season to season: 9% in viewers and 4% demo: one of the most consistent shows on FN. Episode two of the newest primetime shows had better results: 'Tournament of Champions' (or 'Guy's Iron Chef') at 1.06M/0.27 was up 25% in viewers and 12% in demo from its premiere; it improved 'GGG's rating (772,000/0.22) by 36% in viewers and 22% demo, so people were interested in the competition and the competitors, not neccesarily on Guy. Each week, the contestants will compete on challenges at a different Caesar's restaurant in Vegas.
